Janet Jackson’s Growing Pains

November 12th, 2008

Janet Jackson

I’ll admit that I’m one of the many fans wishing that Janet Jackson’s music would grow up a bit. I thought much of her last album sounded like she was competing with her imitators – Britney Spears, anyone? But I never suggest that she try to sound like  Sade!

According to a report of singerroom.com, Janet claims that her former label, Def Jam, wanted her to sound like Sade. Apparently that was the last straw. “I’m not ready for that just yet. I love doing dance songs and I think my fans expect that of me,” she said.

Fair enough, Janet shouldn’t try to sound like another artist, especially someone as iconic as Sade. Still, there has to be a balance somewhere between dance and mature [read: better lyrics, better musical arrangements, better themes] material.

What’s your take? Should Janet’s music sound like her age, not her shoe size?

I guess I’ll be a little biased here because I’m such a fan, but I think her music is great. I do wish that she would make another great song like New Agenda from her JANET. album. But Janet makes music to dance and feel good too. I honestly think Damita Jo and Discipline were great albums. This is Janet’s style she shouldn’t have to change it.

Ken said on November 12th, 2008

I agree they need to cultivate her style as is…or they’re not good producers.

I like Janet but she does need to grow up a lil. Its ok girl, you are 40 and you look good. time to do the same thing. Recongize that you are older and deal with it. Let the music speak of your aged in wisdom and experience.

jmatt said on November 12th, 2008

Janet is a good performer; as a matter of fact her past concerts were among the best I have ever attended, but we all must grow and move to the next level. I grew up listening to her so as a fan my musical taste has grown and so should hers. I know she loves her boo Jermain but his success was with kids who wore their clothes backwards (Hint Hint) . Stay with the adult hit makers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. They brought you success in the past and they can do it again. PEACE.

I totally agree. I have been telling my sister that for quite sometime. The song Janet has called, “This Can’t Be Good,” is just the type of music Janet need to be making. She is older and the songs she is trying to still make do not fit her anymore. And who is playing those songs. No one.

zah zah said on November 12th, 2008

Janet needs to act her age. I no she needs to get todays youth into her music ,but if they don’t like you then give it up. Like the young people take over, You had your turn ,You have enough money let it go. All you doing is stressing yourself out.

Shan said on November 12th, 2008

I love Janet, however it is time to change up and get with the times. You have to stay current in order to remain successful. I am still hearing Control when I listen to her music

Janet really does need to grow up both with her music and her tour. Stop simulating intercourse on stage. It’s disgusting. Quit using Jermaine Dupri too. He’s not helping you musically. You still have it in you woman but act like a woman.

People need to grow up on these comment pages! Say how you feel about the subject and move on. That’s why its called an opinion. Anyway….yes I agree that Janet needs to mature her music. Every artist has to learn how to reposition themselves. Its a part of life. Usually when you start falling apart at your craft, as she is doing now, it means you need to make a change, and there is nothing wrong with that. I hope she takes some time to consider some other options. To be honest, she needs a tragedy. She’s too in love and floating. When you go through some tough times, you are at your best artistically (I know). Just listen to Velvet Rope. It was one f the toughest times ion her life, and her best album. Janet, reposition yourself!

JOHN BELL said on November 13th, 2008

JANET, IS IN HER 40′S NOW. SHE SHOULD STOP COMPETING WITH THAT HIP HOP CREW. SHE DOSE LOOK LIKE A NICE LOVE SONG.

LadyofWisdom said on November 13th, 2008

Belinda, you DO NOT have to be depressed or a tragedy so to speak to have a good album. Most artist make good songs; albums when they are happy with life, in love, and just sure of theirself. It has NOTHING to do with Janet’s love life, she just needs a label/producer that CAN RELATE to her style of music and who really understands her as an artist and person, who knows whats she wants and can deliver it!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t blame Janet, whites are always trying to pursue someone to be someone else and not theirself. Good for Janet to saty true to herself!!!!!!!!!!!Forget all those fuc̷ 0;… ;… .. HATERS JANET, You will be okay!!!!!!!!!!
YOU ARE A TRUE DIVA SO DON’T WORRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!ALL TRUE DIVA’S MAKES COMEBACKS TO THE FULLIEST !!!!!!!! !!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

JanetJacksonFan said on November 13th, 2008

Belinda, that reminded me of an interview that Mary J. Blige did. I can’t remember who she was speaking with, but she was stating how its not fair, that people want her unhappy and depressed for her to make “good” music. She said that she doesn’t like to be that way. LOL ya’ll don’t quote me the words, but that was the point that she was making. The Velvet Rope is a very good album I would agee, but so is Damita Jo and thats when she was freshly in her relationship with JD and happy and in love.

I was just telling someone about this last week, when I heard about her concert situations, and music sales.

Yes, Janet, Girl, it is time!!!!!!

Listen, other artist your age are makin’ music and having hits, they ain’t singin’ I’m in CONTROL, at least change some of your beats. I have two of Janet Jackson songs on my Ipod, sometimes I’m not sure when I left one song and went to the other. They sound the same.

Check this out, if Jermine Dupri can write some hits for Mariah and Ashanti, he surely can hook a sista up.

I’m just sayin’ and yes I a little ticked.

Take Ashanti’s song, I got that good good, fast forward it to your age group, you been had the good, good, work it girl….

veronica said on November 13th, 2008

I am glad someone else said it because I was thinking the same thing. I don’t think she has the talent or strength to change. It may just be time for her to hang it on up!

I’ve sat and watched janet’s songs of the past and just like a true jackson, she and her brother michael need to cut the s h _ _ and recognize who they are.The hot producers of today may add they’er touch to make it happen but it’s really up to michael and janet to recognize they’er true talents +gifts and give they’er fans what i know they can give.I’ve gone on line and have watched michael with will and as far as I’m concerned he needs to, no offence will but what can will do with or even for michael that michael can’t do himself example “T hriller. ”I ’v e had enough of these want be hot producers no offence Mr. dupri of janet’s album and michael’s. Janet if you find this babygirl your man is talented but i believe your hot albums lies with the producers of the past JimmyJ Terry L and oh hell yes you.And as for Mr. Michael you are your badest producer look to youself not willy boy again no offence j and w, your touch just isn’t magic enough for these two it’s going to take the gift of a JACKSON to do a Jackson album. Right Michael?

CH said on November 13th, 2008

You will find some mature songs on Janet’s recent cd’s (Enjoy, Take Care, Can’t Be Good, etc.). Discipline is a very good cd. It lacked the radio push and promotion from the record label. For the next project, I want Janet to reinvent herself. I would like for her to do another concept cd that is very personal to her. Also, I hope she does more movies.

Pamela said on November 14th, 2008

Yes she needs some grown & sexy music for sure.

I would love to hear her voice do some love songs with a jazz spin…..Maybe some voice lessons would not hurt either.

D-SWAUVE said on November 14th, 2008

It really doesn’t make a difference what Janet does. She WILL deliver. If you want to hear something different from her I think she can devote some time to an album with a some change to it. You forget that she has reached SUPERSTAR level so the negative stuff will bounce right off. Her ability talent wise is just about equal to Micheal. This women loves music and her fans. She went from acting to music. What does that tell you? She’s the total package. Go to You tube and watch her kick Jermaine out of her rehearsal rooms. Serious business.

PEOPLE NEED TO CHANGE ALL THE TIME
GRANTED SEASONS CHANGE
AND SO DOES OUR TASTE IN STYLE AND MUSIC
WE KNOW SHE CAN SING BUT WE WANT HER TO UNDERSTAND THAT CHANGE IS GOOD
YOU CANT ALWAYS REMAIN THE SAME
SHE IS OLDER AND WE WANT TO HEAR OF HER EXPERIENCES AND EXPLORATIONS THROUGH HER MUSIC
THAT’S HOW YOU CAN WISDOM THROUGH KNOWLEDGE AND EXPLORATION
THE WAY THAT THINGS ARE CHANGING SHE NEEDS TO CHANGE ALSO
NOT ASKING HER TO CONFIRM AND BE SOMETHING OR SOMEONE THAT SHE IS NOT
BUT SHE NEEDS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT SHE WANTS TO MAKE AND HOW SHE WANTS TO BE PERCEIVED
ALTHOUGH SHE BLAMED IT ON DEF JAM AND THE PROMOTION
SHE WAS A LITTLE EMBARASSED AND SHE COULD OF DONE WAY BETTER
REALITY IS THAT THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A 100% GUARANTEE THAT THESE PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS GOING TO BE AROUND
TRUTH IS FANS CHANGE THEIR MINDS WHENEVER THEY WANT TO
AND IF SOMETHING YOUNGER, CUTER OR SEXIER OUT THERE IS SELLING THEN THAT’S WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO GO FOR
THEY ARE NOT GOING TO SAY B/C BEYONCE HAS HISTORY THAT SHE WILL FOREVER BE POPULAR
LOOK AT PATTY LABELLE & ARETHA FRANKLIN
DID THEY PLAY THEIR ROLE IN HISTORY DEFINITELY
WERE THEY TALENTED DEFINITELY
BUT WHAT SELLS YESTERDAY IS NOT WHAT SELLS TODAY
BESIDES WE ALL KNOW THAT PEOPLE LIKE TRASHY THINGS
AND SEX/BEAUTY SELLS MORE THAN TALENT
THESE WOMEN ARE WILLING TO ALLOW THEMSELVES TO BE COMMERCIALIZED, COMPETE WITH OTHERS, CREATE FALSE RUMORS JUST TO GET BY
YOU PEOPLE ACT LIKE THERE ISNT ANY TENSION
WITH THE RUMORS OF RIHANA & JAY Z HOOK UP
WHICH I THINK DID HAPPEN
WOULDNT YOU FEEL THREATENED
MONEY, FAME AND BEAUTY WONT STOP A GUY FROM CHEATING
YOU PEOPLE ACT LIKE BEYONCE IS UNTOUCHABLE AND SHE CANT HAVE NO COMPETITION
IN THE REAL WORLD NOTHING LAST FOREVER
I KNOW THE THE INDUSTRY IS VERY COMPETITIVE AND EVERYONE IS TRYING TO TOP EVERYONE
SO THEREFORE THEY HAVE TO STEP UP THEIR GAMES
BUT JUST CAUSE WE ARE FANS OF THESE PEOPLE
THAT DOESNT MEAN WE SHOULD TAKE AWAY THE WORTH OF GREAT MUSIC AND REMINDING EACH OTHER TO REMAIN TRUE TO OURSELVES FIRST BEFORE TRYING TO PLEASE THE WORLD
AS THE ARTIST AND CELEBRITIES KNOW NOTHING YOU DO WILL EVER SATISFY YOUR FANS AND THE MEDIA ALL THE WAY

I have been a fan of Janet Jackson for a long time and I believe that she is good in what she does and comes from a very talented musical family. I believe that Janet has paved the way for a lot of the younger artists (including Bey, Jlo, Brit, etc.) that are out there today because if you look at some of the videos of today you can see it in their dance style and that speaks tremendously about Janet’s talent. I don’t think that Janet needs to retire or give up what she loves to do. There are lots of people in their 40’s that cannot dance like Janet. I think that she should go back to JimmieJ and TerryL. I believe that have produced great songs for Janet in the past and I believe they can do the same thing today.

Recently I became upset when LL Cool J refused to perform anymore on tour with Janet. Some say because nobody was buying tickets to her concert, but I find that hard to believe. Some folks no matter if they have a hit song or cd can still draw a crowd just by announcing they are having a concert. This brings me to my other reason for posting, recently one of the major entertainment stations announced that there is a possibility that Michael Jackson will perform and Janet will open for him. Now that.s a concert worth seeing.

Jade said on November 14th, 2008

I think she should retire! she is getting old and she is not getting better!
I was a fan of hers but, I liked her old stuff, the records she had out recently are trash! she is trying to keep up with all the younger singers but she cant!
I love Janet but she needs to sit down and retire, she should just do movies or something. no more Janet please!

Janet, take some time to think and regroup. Re-evaluate where your music’s headed. I think mixing it up a bit would be great. Not feeling what you’ve done lately. How about trying some rock or indie cd!? Looooved “Black Cat!”

jshack said on November 15th, 2008

My girl “c ommercia lly̶ 1; has had a bad shake at things since that boob incident that everyone blamed her for and not Timberlake. It’s almost like she has become public enemy #1 and as a result, poor record sales and radio not playing her songs. Janet has had some fantastic material on Damita Jo, 20 Y.O. and Discipline. I believe you can change with the times and stay true to yourself and that is just what she is doing. People as talented as Janet at this point has absolutely nothing to prove, and when others in her genre can make hit music as long as she has, then come to me and talk and your $$#%!

Tiffany said on November 15th, 2008

Even though I’m not a fan at all she’s truly is talented but with aged suppose to become wisdom and maturity which mean by now she should have put away young girl ways. I applaud her for staying fit for her age but why does she still dress as if she 20. Young girls do that for attention I guess she still is I really hope she fine the attention she desperately need soon because she is truly pass her prime now. Thats why she agree to sounding like Sade because she wants to stay young and popular in the music industry she scared to die out among the “young generation”

JanetJacksonFan said on November 15th, 2008

I think Janet’s music is great. I agree with Janet i want to be able to dance and jam when i listen to her music. Not saying all her music needs to be dance, but she shouldn’t change over to Sade type music either. She is not trying to make music for Sade’s time and era. People today want to dance an move to a beat, not just sit there and zone to the lyrics. Janet doesnt need to grow up, and she doesn’t need to become old school thats just not Janet style. I LOVE JANET’ AND HER MUSIC JUST THE WAY SHE’S DOING IT!!!!!!!!!!!

Texas said on November 16th, 2008

Jacqueline C stated Jay-Z, P. Diddy & Madonna are still performing. Yes they are but they still have sold out crowds and give the people what they want. Janet have to change with the time. It is time for her to stop the whispering when she sing and sing like a woman.

mermaid64 said on November 16th, 2008

I love Janet but her music lately just sucks, it just is missing something. I think she needs new producers and not Jermaine’s input. She needs a young more of a hit makers beats. Maybe she should even try Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis or Dr. Dre or even T-Pain or Timberland. I haven’t been rushing to the store to buy any of her music in a long minute. Please someone get with Janet and help her out and leave out Jermaine Dupri. Have you noticed that Jemaine’s music isn’t that hot never has been, why let Janet get caught up in that funky slump.

Marquaysa said on November 16th, 2008

I like Janet Jackson and I think that her “dance” songs are her signature style—before there was a Ciara or Beyonce or or Britany Spears or Rihanna or anybody else–there was Janet. Can’t nobody take that away from her. At the same time, I believe that she can still grow up with her music. Look @ Mary J. Blige. She is not OLD or anything, but she is “older” than most of her counterparts in this present music industry. She still does her “love songs” like she used to back in the days of “My Life” but she’s grown up now and seen much more and that reflects in her music. With Janet being in such a long-term relationship w/ J.D. and w/ her going through family issues with Michael and the others, you would think she would have some more mature material to put into her music—even her dance songs. Think about MJB’s ‘Just Fine’. It’s a fast, dancing song but it’s a “grown-woman” song as well. Young girls can dance to it, but the grown women who have been w/ Mary J. since the 90’s jam to it too and it’s still relevant. Janet needs to find a balance w/ her musical content that stays true to her “dance style” but is more mature. Once she does this, she could be great

JoJo said on November 16th, 2008

I REALLY DO THINK JANET NEED TO CHANGE HER STYLE. SHE’S OLDER.

WinderUpper said on November 17th, 2008

There has been a serious disconnect with mainstream radio on all formats that needs to be explored by her new label, post IDJ. She herself may need to go back to doing in studio radio promos, which artists of her magnitude usually don’t do! If mainstream America, has apparently been trying to forget George Bush, they could surely “forgive, if they don’t want to forget” Janet Jackson post Superbowl!

Janet should take a page from Mary J. Blige, her music has evolved as she has. Mary is sounding better than ever and her music reflects her maturity but maintains her hip hop style.

I am also one of the people who feels Janet would benefit more from moving to the next level. It’s something about the Jacksons that makes them not want to mature. Yes, I can understand that she wants the longevity of Patti or Tina but if she keeps serving up the same ish, people are going to get bored with her.

And if people listen to Janets first album “Rhythm Nation” You can see all the maturity she had songs like “state of the world”, and “knowledge”. She may seem dumb sometimes but not every one is up there.
