Is Warner Bros. Screwing Up Estelle?
September 1st, 2008
If you haven’t bought “American Boy” or any other individual tune from Estelle’s stellar disc, Shine, on iTunes then you’re out of luck.
Warner Bros./Atlantic Records pulled the individual cuts for sale not because “American Boy” was selling poorly, it yanked them, because it wants her fans to buy the entire disc instead of individual singles. A spokesperson from Warner Bros./Atlantic Records told the Wall Street Journal, that the move is a part of a marketing experiment to “optimize revenues and promote long-term artist development.”
Frankly, I’m not mad at the record company. Hopefully, it’ll bring back the idea of concept album back into the fore, instead of artists just mindlessly stringing singles together without any rhyme or reason. I just hope it doesn’t backlash against Estelle, who’s released one of my favorite R&B albums of the year.
So folks tell me: Do you think pulling individual songs for sale on Shine will help or harm Estelle’s career?

No, I don’t think it will. Actually I think American Boy is a great single and the CD is off the hook. A lot of today’s music buyers are not into lyrics and melodies mainly beats and rumpshakin’ so it makes it hard for someone of Estelle’s caliber to market. I think is wise for Warner Brothers for sake of artist development to do this and other music companies should follow suit.
Estelle Sucks they should drop her.
Warner Bros has it backwards. New artists should have all songs available for individual sale. Veterans (like Rihanna, Beyonce’) should only have the entire disc format, then individual songs could go on sale after the album has been out 1 month.
They don’t play her much here in the south.. And I hate “American Boy”!
I agree with Smitty60. I find that these days you really have to be a music lover to feel underdog artists. I have always loved these artists, because they are innovative, and that’s what makes them special. I think she will be fine, but the music industry is controlled by “the machine” Real music with soul and depth doesn’t make it to mainstream. (I don’t think the “dirty” south is ready; Tamara; LOL!) I have not heard her entire album, so I will check it out now.
She is really hot,i just heard that she is hooking up with a tall basketball player on a tall dating place named: http://Tallmingle.com ,really?
She sounds more like an MTV artist. She is one of those type of artist you will only here in the mall clothing stores!!!!
I don’t think it was a good idea to pull the album. I honestly only heard American Boy, and because of iTunes, thats what made me check out the rest of the CD. In fact Shine in my favorite song off that album. But hey I don’t know anything about the music industry so who am I to judge!! But its definitely a good album!
I tried to listen to the album Belinda… I still don’t like her.. LOL! You have to give me “A” for effort though =0)
umm can she REALLY Sing? or is she a rapper? i agree her skills are not up to par
I really hate “American Boy”. The song is saying that she wants an american boy to give her everything, like she is a gold digger or something. I think they should never play this song again! As for the rest of the album, I haven’t heard it so I can’t comment on it!
i happen to this won’t hurt estelle’s sales at all. she happpens to be on fo the few artists out with artistry, and a sense of style. i absolutely love her style, and hope to buy her album soon( when i’m get paid).
I very much enjoyed two of Estelle’s songs that I’ve heard, “Wait A Minute” and “American Boy”. They were very different in beats and tempo. And, as for pulling her single so that her album would sell, I think that they should have both on the market.
She looks cute….Someone saw her profile with sexy photos on ___tallloving.com___, a hot hook-up club for baketabll players and modles. It seems the profile looks sincere and attractive. Is it real!? Lots of beautiful modles and hotties are said to be there.
Wow I am not sure it may detour them from the entire album and instead get nothing then what? check these out you can get as many songs as you like!!!! http://www.Rhapsody.com/HoneyBrown
