Halle Berry Talks Domestic Violence

It’s not every day you hear Halle Berry speaking up and getting personal, but she recently lent her voice to a hot button news topic: domestic violence.

According to the Associate Press, the Oscar-winning actress has been a low-key volunteer on the night shift at the Jenesse center in LA for years, but for the first time she’s speaking out about how she relates to the topic directly. She told The Sunday Times: “I saw my mother battered, and could not do anything to stop it – my father was tyrannical, lashing out at her for no reason. I felt the effects that had on our family — I’ve experienced what these women have gone through.”

She continued: “I never had to run to a shelter, but I did choose the wrong partners. Not always good men. Luckily, in recent years, I have been smart enough to hit the door when violence even becomes a possibility. That is something I will not tolerate.”

No word on why Halle decided to speak on this now, but apparently she never forgave her father, a hospital porter, even as he lay dying with Parkinson’s disease in 2003, so it must’ve taken a lot of her to open up about this.

Thank you Halle! It’s nice to see a celebrity speaking out about an issue for the sake of helping out someone that’s going through the same thing, not because they’re promoting a project!  Hopefully more people follow Halle’s footsteps and keep this discussion going, so we can all do our part to stop the violence!

I don’t think the Women In Entertainment Awards Luncheon is appropriate forum for her to speak out on this issue. Tha’t were she did it, and I think it was an appropriate topic for her to speak out on.

I am totally for her speaking out against Domestic Violence, I have a family history of it. But for her to do it at an Awards Ceremony was very ‘Unclassy’ to me! That’s my opinion!

I love how the tags of this are Chris Brown And Rihanna. She didnt even say anything about them so everytime something about domestic violence accures their names are gonna pop up thats stupid. And i think they were referring to Rihanna on the promting thing because she surely didnt speak until it was 2 and a half week til her album dropped in fact she stayed out of the spotlight up til then hmmmmm. That does make a good point but it was not really necessary to put rihanna and chris in the tags for the topics because this was about her and they made it about them thats sad.

its sad that chris brown and rihanna are tagged in this post, seems like every time a domestic violence issue comes up it will always reflect on chris brown, i hope some day people can open up and have forgiveness in their heart, i feel sory for halle for not forgiving her father even in his deathbed. very sad.

I’m sure if Halle’s dad was as cute as Chris Brown it would have been a helluva lot easier to forgive him.

Yeah, I don’t see what Chris Brown or Rihanna have to do with Halle Berry’s talking about domestic violence. Except, of course, that they also have experience with domestic abuse – but so do half of the women in America! Why not tag ‘Elin Nordegren’ or ‘Oprah Winfrey’?

That issue aside, I am very glad that Ms. Berry is telling her story – lots of people are ashamed that they are victims of abuse, so they don’t tell anybody, choosing instead to suffer. But, when we hear about someone else being bold enough to speak their story, we are encouraged to deal with our own situations. So, I think it is a noble, helpful thing that Ms. Berry is doing.

This is a hot-button issue in the media right now, so I wish there were even more discussion. Marala Scott (you know, the lady up on Oprah.com right now) wrote her experience with domestic violence into a book! Now that’s empowering others to share their own stories (it’s called ‘In Our House: Perception vs. Reality‘). This is just my opinion, but I think Ms. Berry should make Ms. Scott’s book into a movie! That would really change lives!
