Wyclef Jean and Other Celebrities Solicit Support for HaitiPublished by Dior Noir on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 3:00 pm.
A day after Haiti’s devastating earthquake, President Obama has said that the United States government would offer “swift, coordinated, and aggressive” aid to the estimated three million people caught in the disaster; but celebrities have also started to mobilize to raise support for the country now.
The 7.0 quake, which hit just 10 miles from the densely-populated capital of Port-au-Prince, has left hospitals leveled, people displaced and a rising death toll that, according to the Associate Press. Casualties are believed to be anywhere from 100,000 to as high as 500,000.
“I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is, and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse,” said Wyclef Jean in a statement.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who have worked with Wyclef in the past, have also pledged to help in the efforts. “We will work closely with our good friend Wyclef Jean to support the humanitarian efforts on the island and help those who have been injured and left without homes and shelter,” a statement from the couple said.
A long list of celebrities including John Legend, Nicole Richie, Diddy, and Russell Simmons are spreading the word via their Twitter pages on how to donate to organizations such as The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) — and urging fans to get involved.
