Where is Kanye when you need him!

The Internet is reeling over some very candid comments John Mayer made about Black women in a recent Playboy interview. I have to admit, I winced when reading several of his comments in general during the article (like when he outlines his response to someone recently asking him: “What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?” click source below to read the interview in it’s entirety), but here’s what he had to say about Black women in particular:

PLAYBOY: Do black women throw themselves at you?

MAYER: I don’t think I open myself to it. My di-k is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a fu–in’ David Duke cock. I’m going to start dating separately from my di-k.

PLAYBOY: Let’s put some names out there. Let’s get specific.

MAYER: I always thought Holly Robinson Peete was gorgeous. Every white dude loved Hilary from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. And Kerry Washington. She’s superhot, and she’s also white-girl crazy. Kerry Washington would break your heart like a white girl. Just all of a sudden she’d be like, “Yeah, I sucked his di-k. Whatever.” And you’d be like, “What? We weren’t talking about that.”

So Mayer has a self proclaimed racist di-k? It definitely took some balls for him to say that! He could’ve picked a more PC way to make the point that he doesn’t really date Black women, for sure, and I’m not feeling the way he talked about Kerry!  But is there really a problem in general with Mayer saying that he doesn’t date Black women? I know several Black women who will honestly say that they don’t really check for White men when it comes to dating either. Plus judging by many of the comments in last month’s post about Reggie Bush gracing the February cover of Essence, there’s a whole lot of folks who would prefer that Black people only date other Black people anyway (wheew some of ya’ll went off!). So tell us:

Are John Mayer’s comments offensive to you? If so, why?

DEE, thank God there are a few people like you who have read the article. You get it. 100%

It was not fair for those remarks to be published on their own. Many people are saying he’s a racist, and that is a pretty big and ugly label to put on someone. But some people just love to hate.

I swear 1/2 the comments I read on other sites are people who are just pissed off he broke up with Aniston. So many people become lunatics over Jen, they have her on a pedestal. They still hate on Brad Pitt, 5, yes 5 years after they divorced. Now John. Any man who dates her and they break up is in for a world of hate. Insanity.

I respect John and I enjoy what he says most of the time. The guy should not be crucified for having his mouth run before his brain does. It was a joke in bad taste, but none of it was malicious.

As Dee said Please READ before you REACT. You can’t understand a book from just a few sentences. For the people who say “I’ve read enough” enjoy your hate-a-thon. Keep being clever by calling him a douche. Put words in his mouth he never said. Label him a racist, casually and carelessly. You are saying much more about yourselves.

JOHN MAYER SPEAKS FOR 95% OF THE WHITE MALE POPULATION IN THIS COUNTRY. SAD AS IT IS.

You could have fooled me, I did not think he was white. He does not look white to me, and who really cares about the size of his manlyness.

I don’t think that anyone should be limited to date only by a persons race or rather “look”. I also think it has nothing to do with what WHITE women do in bed that Black women don’t. I think it is a matter of compatability. Being of Multiracial/Muti-Ethnic descent I have dated everyrace except for Chinese ( I have dated Indian 3 times). I find that black women are overly aggressive and also caught up in being “heard”. While the fact of the matter is , if you pick a no good dude , you will have a situation that belittles you. So then a real man comes along and has to pay for your past? They talk about angry Black women (of which they are many) , who are always on the offensive. It is not attractive, plus who needs the drama. Especially if you are an upwarly mobile dude who has his stuff together! As a whole like everything else there are good and bad in every race, so it is a matter of connecting!

I think the comments stirred up some sensitivities and people have let their well-founded issues with Other things that Other people have said drive their reactions to what he himself has said.

…comparing any part of one’s self to a white supremacist isn’t the best move, especially if you’re famous and will thus have your words reduced to sound bites, twisted, and over-analyzed (case in point) but I think it’s just a case of somebody trying to be edgy and putting their foot in their mouth. Keep in mind this is a PLAYBOY interview people, not some P.C. political soapbox.

Some men haven’t had the pleasure of sexing a black woman yet, I don’t see any reason to jump down his throat about it. People are attracted to what they’re attracted to: that in and of itself is not racism, it’s preference. I know PLENTY of other black females who would say the same about a white guy (sometimes with even more of a racist undertone), and nobody would even blink.

I can’t hate on anybody who would decide to stop supporting him, nor could I hate on anybody who still pumped his music. I sure as hell wouldn’t date John Mayer…but honestly that’s Probably not relevant issue.

To Denise, more white dudes would be open to more black women if they would let them. you have to be OPENMINDED. I have a LOT of Friends who are White who would LOVE to date a Normal black Chick. Not a ballistic one. So you are wrong!

While the remark could have been better worded I am not offended. I am a black women and I am interested in white men for sexual purposes. I am not a racist that is just my choice. Just as we have choices about height, weight, skin hue and the likes, we can choose the ethic group we are or are not attracted to without being racist. His mouth got ahead of his brain on this one!

the truth comes out when a candid conversation is had , for him (john mayer) to make such inflammatory comments so candidly shows the true nature of his character , the man is a racist simple! his fruedin slip shows the truth behind the ma! The sad part isnt in the comment he made but the amnesia everyone will get in a few weeks after he forcibly donates to some charitable black cause, and makes an insincere apology!
that said ,the N is used so freely amongst us black people that can you really blame someone for using the term?whose the hypocrite us or him?
a term directed at blacks less than 50yrs ago as the ultimate insult is today a term of endearment amongst blacks?? its lunacy !!!!

Where is Kanye West when you need him, Hilarious!
John is just an Idiot! I honestly think its not his morals in question its his intelligence! did he seriously think that was a wize, cool move! IDIOT

I really could care less who he is attracted too. there is always a proper way to say things but he came out more like an a$$hole than of someone trying to make a brilliant statement. i have to be honest as a black woman i am not attracted to white men and my husband is black and that is how i like it. now is that wrong but if i stated my P*ssy only drools for the darker brother and white men turn it into the desert when they past by. I Mean really he could have been nicer and less ingorant. but you give them a foot in the ghetto and they think they can run 8 miles in it. Love that Eminen

The fact that Mayer doesn’t date or even have the desire to date black women isn’t and shouldn’t come as an issue or a problem at all. I, as a black woman, don’t scout for white men. Ok, Mayer’s comment in other words said, “I HAVE A COLORFUL HEART BUT A RACIST PENIS.” I think that the expression of David Duke as a feeling towards black isn’t just about a non-preference for black women, it’s become more of a disgust for black women. With that being said, yes it’s quite offensive. It’s like: “No, I don’t date black women.” …compared to… “Oh no, oh no, no no no, I definitely do not in anyway, form or fashion, do not date black women!”

I did read the whole interview – and he was trying to be shocking and make headlines… fortunately we got to see that he has no respect for the people that created the music that made him rich nor the people in his band that have supported his whole career. I went to his concert in Toronto and didn’t find out about his statements until a few days later. I was disappointed in him but also disappointed in the people around him that made him think it was ok to disparage us. John Mayer will never see another dime of my money just like any other artist that seems to have no problem insulting Black people (that includes Black artists as well). We have come so very far, and we’ll always encounter racism in Mild comedic tones like John Mayer’s or Harsh Harmful tones like his nicknamed Male-Member; his #$%#$ ‘David Duke’.
Black women whatever your shade, you may not look like the women the media (or John Mayer) idolize but that doesn’t make you undesirable or not worthy to be considered as a partner. Look beyond this opinion and other like it.
