Pras Won’t Endorse Wyclef for President of HaitiPublished by Dior Noir on Monday, August 9, 2010 at 3:00 pm.
Wyclef Jean has formally announced that he is running for President of Haiti, but his bid won’t be endorsed by his former Fugees group member Pras, who is throwing his support to a rival candidate instead.
“Basically, I went down to Haiti yesterday to endorse a friend of mine named Michel Martelly. He’s an ex-musician, very, very popular down in Haiti,” Pras told MTV. “Listen, I love Wyclef to death,” he continued. “We came up together, we grew up together, we basically called each other cousins. But the reality is this, we need a real leader. Not just a regular leader, but a transformative leader. Someone that’s gonna be able to galvanize the Haitians down on the field, the Haitian-Americans, the international community, it’s a collective support — to take this country to the 21st century. And I’m just not convinced Wyclef is the one for that.”
Pras isn’t the only entertainer who doubts Wyclef’s abilities. Actor Sean Penn has also spoken out: “I’m not accusing Wyclef Jean of being an opportunist; I don’t know the man,” Penn told CNN. “One of the reasons I don’t know very much about Wyclef Jean is that I haven’t seen or heard anything of him in these last six months that I’ve been in Haiti.”
Penn also brought up the controversy surrounding Wyclef’s charity Yéle Haiti, which has been accused of misusing $9 million it raised for earthquake relief.
Although Wyclef hasn’t lived in Haiti since he was a child, he’s very optimistic about running for president: “America has Barack Obama and Haiti has Wyclef Jean,” the musician has said. He’ll be relying on younger voters to get him into office on election day and has already started distancing himself from the older candidates – including his uncle, Raymond Joseph, who has been the U.S. ambassador for the past five years.
It all goes down in the polls on Nov. 28th!
Do you think Wyclef would make a good president for Haiti?
