While her middle finger caused a frenzy in prime time on Superbowl Sunday, another story about M.I.A. indicates she may be flipping the bird to the family life as well. Rumor has it that the controversial rapper is splitting with her fiance, Seagram’s heir and musician Benjamin Bronfman. Worse, sources for the New York Daily News say M.I.A. has been skipping out on her parental duties toward their three-year-old son Ikhyd Edgar Arular Bronfman.

M.I.A. “sometimes goes six weeks without seeing” her son, the source said, adding that Bronfman’s mother, philanthropist Sherry Bronfman, is helping to raise Ikhyd.

The couple’s wedding plans have been iffy since the rapper told Fader magazine in 2010 that she won’t marry for a green card: “That’s what they want me to do, but I’m not going to lose my integrity for that sh–. I actually want a nice wedding. I’m not going to blow that.” The young family have been living in LA’s upscale Brentwood neighborhood since getting engaged in 2008.

Now, is any of this really a surprise? Can anyone really see M.I.A., with her eff-the-world attitude, pushing a cart at Whole Food? As for the allegations that she’s a deadbeat mom, sounds like that could be blown a little out of proportion. But with no comment from the unhappy couple, that only leads most people to assume the worst. M.I.A.’s music is laced with references to her father’s absence from her childhood…let’s hope she doesn’t let history repeat itself.
