Naomi Campbell Was the Toast of the British Fashion Awards

December 8th, 2010

Congrats!

Naomi Campbell was among the twelve leading figures of the British Fashion industry honored at the 2010 British Fashion Awards, Dec. 7, at the swanky Savoy Hotel and Theatre in London. The iconic supermodel was awarded a new “Special Recognition Award” (yes, when you’re Naomi they make up awards for you) in recognition of her influence on the fashion industry over the past 25 years.

The awards ceremony also honored the Naomi’s late friend, designer Alexander McQueen and the model sent her own nod to the designer by wearing a breathtaking Alexander McQueen gown, custom designed by the label’s new designer Sarah Burton. In her acceptance speech Naomi thanked Brown for making her not one, but two options for the night (smart woman! Nobody wants to make this icon unhappy).

The model got choked up while getting through the rest of her speech:  ”Sorry I just got all teary, it’s just overwhelming to be recognised in your own country, it’s a huge privilege and it makes me feel very proud to be British,” she said. “Women of colour are now far better represented – we still have a long way to go, but I’m very proud.”
