On the Scene: ‘For Colored Girls’ New York PremiereOctober 26th, 2010
Last night’s New York premiere of Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls” at the Ziegfeld Theater was a breathtakingly beautiful sight to behold. An amazing roster of entertainers were in attendance, including the movie’s stars Janet Jackson, Thandie Newton, Anika Noni Rose, Kerry Washington, Loretta Devine, Phylicia Rashad, Macy Gray, Tessa Thompson and of course, the woman who made it all possible: the legendary Ntozake Shange, who wrote the original play “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.” And that’s just naming a few of the gorgeous women who sashayed down the red carpet!

Ciara celebrated her birthday night at the premiere and made a splash in Loraine Schwartz jewelry (including some fabulous pink diamond bangles!) and Christian Louboutin heels. “I could’ve worn pumps with this dress, but we wanted to make it a little more young and fun,” she said about her leopard booties. After seeing the shoes, I had to ask about her $11,000/month shoe spending habit! “It’s true sometimes,” she said. “I actually reversed it and it’s kind of embarrassing to share, but on a past shopping experience I had, I spent $13,000 on clothes. It’s a little ridiculous but I need the clothes to go with all my shoes!” OK big spender! Shoes are still her first love. “I feel like my outfit is nothing without my shoes. I have a shoe fetish.”
Estelle, who appears on the movie’s soundtrack, wore a mix of designers including Preen leather pants (I die!), an Alexander McQueen jacket, and Giuseppe Zanotti heels. “I picked the pants and then the shoes and thought, you know. I need some color,” she said about creating this chic and playful outfit.
The flawless Kerry Washington swept down the carpet in a Missoni dress and Armani bag. Her tip for staying gorgeous: getting plenty of beauty rest. “The more rest we have, the better we feel, and if you feel beautiful, you’ll look beautiful.”
BET Rising Icon Laura Izibor sang her way onto two songs on the movie’s soundtrack–a job she nailed over other industry heavy-hitters. The Dublin-born singer also stood out on the carpet in a sexy one-shoulder mini and a sleek updo–a break from her usual curls. “These days as a girl it’s so easy to stick to your greys and your blacks but I had to do red!” she said “I’ve been loving color these past few weeks.”
The “Adorable Award” of the night goes to 5-year-old Jaycee Williams who plays Kimberly Else’s daughter in the film. This little cutie put down the chain-detailed bag she was rocking just to show off the personalized Breast Cancer Awareness shirt that she wore with leggings and a jean jacket. “I like to dress up!” she said. She even accessorized with a Chanel logo barrette and earrings. Aww!
