Are You Feeling it? Janet Jackson’s Menswear at MJ’s Trial

January 6th, 2011

Ms. Jackson got down to business in a tailored suit and tie combo.

Janet Jackson suited up to attend the case against Michael Jackson’s doctor Conrad Murray at the Los Angeles Criminal Court.  While we’ve seen her in menswear on several occasions over the years, this look was particularly masculine with her cropped hair, shirt buttoned to the top (usually when Janet does a suit, the girls are out!) and tie.

She did give the outfit a ladylike touch with oversized shades, a Hermes Birkin bag and towering Christian Louboutin booties.

I think it’s so interesting that right now so many entertainers are playing with styles that some would consider for the opposite gender. While it doesn’t always work, Janet’s outfit is striking to say the least. Do you think it’s fab or a fail?

Janet Jackson Has Gone Plastic for a Good Cause

December 6th, 2010

The diva gets a look-alike Barbie to benefit charity.

‘Tis the season for giving back, and Janet Jackson has partnered with Mattel with a fun way to do it. The toy company has immortalized Ms. Jackson with a one-of-a-kind “Divinely Janet” Barbie  up for auction at Bidding for Janet’s plastic mini-me started at $250 (it’s currently up to $1,050) and the doll has an estimated value of $15, 000. The proceeds will  benefit Project Angel Food, which delivers meals to Los Angeles-area families affected by terminal illnesses.

Unlike many celebrity dolls, this one actually looks pretty dead on Janet with it’s short hair, nose and smile. She’s even got the singer’s beauty mark.

The Barbie’s ultra-glam gown was modeled after the look that Janet wore to perform on American Idol earlier this year. “I knew we had to recreate that look for her one of a kind doll,” said Mattel Designer Jackline Gonzalez. Gonzalez duplicated the black gown–right down to the body-hugging cat-suit underneath that Janet revealed during her second performance. The doll dress–and mic–have hand placed Swarovski crystals to give her extra shine.

The fashionable doll will come with a special display case and a certificate of authenticity. Get more info on the auction and place a bid here through December 15th.

On the Scene: ‘For Colored Girls’ New York Premiere

October 26th, 2010

Beauty defined.

Last night’s New York premiere of Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls” at the Ziegfeld Theater was a breathtakingly beautiful sight to behold. An amazing roster of entertainers were in attendance, including the movie’s stars Janet Jackson, Thandie Newton, Anika Noni Rose, Kerry Washington, Loretta Devine, Phylicia Rashad, Macy Gray, Tessa Thompson and of course, the woman who made it all possible: the legendary Ntozake Shange, who wrote the original play “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.”  And that’s just naming a few of the gorgeous women who sashayed down the red carpet!

See some of my favorite outfits and what the ladies had to say about their style. Then be sure to check out our complete Red Carpet Rundown to see the full scope of the fabulousness from the night!

Ciara celebrated her birthday night at the premiere and made a splash in Loraine Schwartz jewelry (including some fabulous pink diamond bangles!) and Christian Louboutin heels. “I could’ve worn pumps with this dress, but we wanted to make it a little more young and fun,” she said about her leopard booties. After seeing the shoes, I had to ask about her $11,000/month shoe spending habit! “It’s true sometimes,” she said. “I actually reversed it and it’s kind of embarrassing to share, but on a past shopping experience I had, I spent $13,000 on clothes. It’s a little ridiculous but I need the clothes to go with all my shoes!” OK big spender! Shoes are still her first love. “I feel like my outfit is nothing without my shoes. I have a shoe fetish.”

Estelle, who appears on the movie’s soundtrack, wore a mix of designers including Preen leather pants (I die!), an Alexander McQueen jacket, and Giuseppe Zanotti heels. “I picked the pants and then the shoes and thought, you know. I need some color,” she said about creating this chic and playful outfit.

The flawless Kerry Washington swept down the carpet in a Missoni dress and Armani bag. Her tip for staying gorgeous: getting plenty of beauty rest. “The more rest we have, the better we feel, and if you feel beautiful, you’ll look beautiful.”

BET Rising Icon Laura Izibor sang her way onto two songs on the movie’s soundtrack–a job she nailed over other industry heavy-hitters.  The Dublin-born singer also stood out on the carpet  in a sexy one-shoulder mini and a sleek updo–a break from her usual curls.  “These days as a girl it’s so easy to stick to your greys and your blacks but I had to do red!” she said “I’ve been loving color these past few weeks.”

The “Adorable Award” of the night goes to 5-year-old Jaycee Williams who plays Kimberly Else’s daughter in the film. This little cutie put down the chain-detailed bag she was rocking just to show off the personalized Breast Cancer Awareness shirt that she wore with leggings and a jean jacket. “I like to dress up!” she said. She even accessorized with a Chanel logo barrette and earrings.  Aww!

Janet Jackson’s New Campaign Slammed by PETA

July 19th, 2010

A hairy situation….

Luxury mink company Blackglama has chosen Janet Jackson as the new face of their “What Becomes a Legend Most” ad campaign, and in turn, the PETA has chosen the singer as their latest target.

In her first photo shoot that shows off her newly cropped hair, Janet works face-framing fur and other all-black ensembles that incorporate mink. The singer joins a long list of fabulous legends—including Lena Horne and Diana Ross—who have participated in the campaign since its debut four years ago.

The PETA routinuely takes celebrities to task for wearing fur, so it was only a matter of time before they started throwing shade.  “You told me that you were always aggravated at photo shoots when stylists would try to throw fur on you and that you were even wary of wearing fake fur out of concern that it might actually be real or look real in photos and send the wrong message,” Dan Matthews, PETA Senior Vice President said in an open letter. “You were very straightforward and sensible about it. What happened?” Matthews even took it a step further and referenced Michael Jackson’s death: “I’ve admired your grace ‘Good Times’ to your family’s recent hard times. I sincerely hope that the events of recent years haven’t hardened your heart to the suffering of others.”

Another PETA spokesperson, Amanda Schinke, remarked: “It’s amazing what celebrities will do when their careers are on a downslide, but we didn’t think Janet was this desperate.”

Wow! From bringing up her to bashing her career, the PETA is acting pretty desperate themselves trying to pull out all the stops to support their cause!

Janet hasn’t responded to their lashing out. Her campaign will be featured in national and international print outlets and billboards starting in September.

Do you think the PETA Is out of line? Or should Janet pull out of the campaign?

Janet Takes it All Off

May 20th, 2010

E tu, Miss Jackson?

I think it’s safe to just go ahead and declare this the “Year of the Shears!” Janet  has officially arrived to the sassy shaven club that celebs like Amber Rose, Solange and Chrisette Michele have drawn so much attention to lately:

Janet Jackson

The pop icon has been in London promoting Why Did I Get Married Too and yesterday she was snapped leaving Ceccioni’s restaurant in Mayfair in this new slicked back hairstyle. We’ve seen almost every hairstyle on her over the years–and long curly locks as of late–but this is a first!

As much as Janet has been through in the last year, I wouldn’t be surprised if she chopped it off for a fresh start or maybe she was weaved up and simply needed a summertime breather.

No matter what the reason, she’s Janet dammit! If anyone can work this style it’s her.

Does the new look get your nod of approval?

Miss Jackson Is An Animal

September 24th, 2008

She’s a Jackson… Did you expect any less?

Sometimes Janet has the worst fashion sense. Don’t you think?

Like too costumey.

Janet Jackson

Really, Janet, a beret?

If you want to make a style statement, bring back the big earring with the key on it!

Not that was the ish.

I am happy she’s wearing a top that actually keeps her pleasure principles covered.
