Oscars Best Dressed 2011

February 28th, 2011

They’re winners in our book.

Not one of the nominees for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards was a Black actor or actress, but at least presenters Halle Berry, Jennifer Hudson and Oprah turned the night out in their stunning gowns.

Does Halle Berry ever have an off moment at an award show? She could wear a potato sack and still look amazing, but she swept down the red carpet in a gorgeous embellished Marchesa gown.

The only thing that’s killing me about her look is the bottom of this dress. I’m not sure if it was the way she walked that bunched up the tulle in the very front or if it’s gathered that way to show off the beading at the bottom, but that effect makes the detail look a curtain that was thrown on as an after thought. I wish it pulled down a little more because the train is fabulous. Hopefully that’s just the picture.

Jennifer Hudson continued to remind us all that Weight Watchers has done her body good and wore a plunging, tangerine 2008 Spring Versace gown blinged out with Neil Lane diamond earrings and bracelets. She looked amazing; a huge improvement from the Oscar de la Renta dress and space-agey python bolero she wore to her first Oscar appearance.

Now some people are getting on her for pairing purple Versace heels with the bright dress, but I actually loved the color contrast:

What I couldn’t get into was her hair which was fashioned in a  pin curl, around-the-way ponytail.

A halter gown begs for a up-do, but a simpler one would’ve been much more sophisticated with this ensemble.

Oprah shimmered in a satin and beaded Zac Posen gown to present the Best Documentary Award. The off-the-shoulder, 3/4 sleeve, full skirt silhouette seems to be one of her favorites and the style always makes her look striking and regal.

Jennifer Hudson Designed Her Wedding Dress

January 21st, 2011

Here comes the bride.

After a two-year engagement it looks like Jennifer Hudson might be all set to jump the broom. At least the Oscar-winner has the big details ironed out, including her dress and jewelry. “Everything is already set,” she told OK! magazine. “We already have our wedding bands and everything made, and Neil Lane made them. I designed [my dress] myself. I did.”

Hudson flashed her 5-carat Neil Lane engagement ring at the 9th Annual GEM Awards.

Jennifer has said in the past that she wanted a classic gown and it sounds like the finished product she created is going to be breathtaking coming down the aisle. “It has its own show,” she said. “It is a show, so it has to have its own moment with special lighting and everything and theme music. Oh, I am so serious. It’s white. That’s the color, in keeping with tradition. Baby came first, but hey.”

The actress didn’t say if she and her fiance, David Otunga had set a date this year, but she did say that when the big day happens her son, David Jr. will be involved in the ceremony. “David, Jr. will look just like his father in his tux. So cute. I’ll have both my Davids. Maybe he’ll walk Mommy down the aisle. That would be so cute!”

I can’t wait to see this dress! She’s going look amazing with that new figure.

Jennifer Hudson is a Shopping Addict

December 16th, 2010

Shop ’till you drop.

Since dropping from a size 16 to a size 4 Jennifer Hudson admitted she can’t get enough of buying new clothes for her shape.

Back in August she told InStyle Makeover: “I have a serious shopping problem now. Each city we go to, my suitcase won’t hold my new clothes, so we have to box them up and ship them home. Then I get back and want to try on everything I bought, so clothes are just everywhere. It got to a point where I could barely get in my bedroom. And when did I realize I had a problem? Well, my bed is a canopy. I had nowhere else to throw the clothes. So I threw them on top of the canopy!”

Now reports are stying it’s a serious problem. “She not only buys clothes, she picks up items for their home, and always something for the baby,” a source told the National Enquirer. “Jennifer will see a commercial for something on TV and scream ‘I have to have it!’ Then she’ll go on the Internet to find it.”

Another source said Jennifer’s husband David Otunga is trying to kick her of the shopping habit. “David seriously thinks Jennifer needs to get help. He thought her power shopping was just a phase, but now it’s causing problems between them. After Jennifer lost the baby weight, he knew she’d have to buy new clothes, but now he feels she’s become obsessed with material things.”

That made me laugh, but apparently shopping addictions are real problems for some people and there are even support groups such as Shopaholics Anonymous.

Who knows how serious Hudson’s “addiction.”  I have a feeling she’s just enjoying dressing her new shape and what’s wrong with her spending her hard earned money to do that?

Do you have a real shopping addiction or know anyone who does? Tell us about it!

Fall 2010 Fashion: Shop Your Closet

September 20th, 2010

Can you feel fall in the air?

It’s about that time again: the leaves are changing, fashion magazines weigh almost as much as dictionaries, Pumpkin Spice Lattes are back in Starbucks and it’s time to buy a new wardrobe–or at least find a few key pieces that’ll give your closet an update. Ahh fall!  Before you start stocking up on all thing’s fresh for the season, what’s already in your closet? Probably more wearable options from last year than you think. Here’s a flashback to some styles you might already have that are worth pulling out again for another go round.

1. Blazers

They’ve proven to be a multi-season classic and they’re sticking around…again. For fall try mixing a wool-blend version with feminine fabrics like sheer or lace or slip, pop a scarf underneath, mix it with skinny jeans or incorporate other nods to menswear–which fits right into this season’s tailored trend.

2. Dark Florals

While floral are often associated with spring and summer, last year’s stormier prints were perfect to mix with inky pieces like black tights and boots and will fit right in again with the more somber colors and pieces this season. If your florals are brighter, try adding a cardigan that matches the dress’ color palate.

Chanel Iman

3. Ruffles

This feminine finish popped up on bags, shoes, dresses, shirts, bathing suits–you name it–over the last year. Wearing one key piece, like a cardigan, is a fresh way to keep getting your frills.

 Alek Wek

4. Oxford Shoes

The grandpa-turned-universal shoe for every hipster in America still looks cool with a variety of pieces from skinny pants to dresses and looks sleek dressed up or down.

5. Over-the-Knee Boots

The sexy stiletto versions are still hot, but this fall you’ll also see  styles that are more casual and flatter–which means stylish options that give your feet a break.

What other styles will you recycle from last fall?

Jennifer Hudson ‘Makeover of the Year’

August 4th, 2010

WIN Jen!

OK, Jennifer Hudson officially makes me want to step my game up! Not only has the Grammy and Oscar winner cut a new album and landed a new movie while planning a wedding, she also managed to drop from a 16 to a sleek size 6, even after having a baby! Her sexy transformation landed her the cover of InStyle’s annual Makeover issue where she rocks a body-con Hervé Léger bandage dress.  Now that she’s slimmed down the super-mama says she can’t stop buying new clothes for her new shape.  ”I have a serious shopping problem now,’ she told the magazine. “Each city we go to, my suitcase won’t hold my new clothes so we have to box them up and ship them home.”

Although her weightloss does look great on her I honestly don’t think that’s the only thing that’s making her look so fabulous these days. Jennifer’s entire style is far more polished than when we first got familiar with her in her American Idol and even Dreamgirls days. She’s higher profile and she’s older and you can tell her taste has evolved over the years. Even before she dropped the dress sizes and teamed up with Weight Watchers to become their spokesperson she was styling in her curves on red carpets at the Grammys and other events. She has always represented for the curvy girls.

“I don’t want to lose any more weight,” Hudson said “and you’re never going to see me skinny. I think this is a good, natural size for me. David [Otunga, Hudson's fiancé] doesn’t like change. He tells me I have no breasts anymore. He tries to feed me. He’s adjusting.”

Don’t waste away on us girl!

But besides the style and body transformations, Jennifer might just have one more makeover in store:

“I’m actually thinking about shaving my head,” she tells InStyle. “I am! Because I feel I’ve got a good structure now [gingerly feels cheekbones]. My cousin’s a beautician, and she always tells me, ‘You could wear any hairdo.’ So I’m thinking, What if I shave my hair? Not completely off, but low. I think that would be so hot. With my diamond studs? But with a cut like that, your face has to be made up at all times. It has to be on.”

Jennifer in the short hair club? That could be interesting…

Check out more scans from the InStyle makeover issue which hits newsstands this Friday.

Jennifer Hudson’s Holiday Treat

November 17th, 2008

Such a cute Gap ad.

Argyle sweaters, cardigan dresses, stripe scarves, cozy hoodies, warm turtlenecks … Oh My! It makes me want to pack up my things, head to Boston and bundle up in wool and argyle.

Jennifer Hudson Gap ad

I’m so happy Jennifer gave the “OK” to continue with her holiday Gap ad she shot back in July with Michael Thompson. While some say the timing may seem inappropriate, I think it’s just great.

Everyone remember Jennifer in your prayers through this difficult holiday season. And if you happen to come across this ad, let it be a reminder to us all of our many blessings and how important family and friends are. Thanks, Jennifer.
