The Apollo Theater’s Golden Ladies: Aretha and J-Lo

June 15th, 2010

Just let your soul glow…or your outfit.

Last night’s Apollo Theater Spring Benefit Concert & Awards Ceremony, held right on 125th Street in New York at the iconic theater drew a long roster of classic entertainers we all love:  Ruby Dee, Jamie Foxx, Angela Bassett, Estelle, former Floetry front woman Marsha Ambrosius, Chris Tucker, Danny Glover, Gayle King.  The event honored greats who have passed including a tribute to Lena Horne and inducting Michael Jackson into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame, but also paid homage to living legend  Aretha Franklin who was inducted into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame and gave a nod to Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony with the “Ruby Dee & Ossie Davis Arts and Humanitarian Award.  The ladies went for the gold for their big moment.

J-Lo dazzled on the red carpet in a sequin Gianfranco Ferre dress. The former fly girl loves her plunging necklines! Sexy, sexy especially for a mother of twins, goodness you can’t even tell!

Aretha Franklin repeated the exact same outfit she wore the night before at the TONY Awards, right down to the Chanel bag, although she did swap out her blonde wig for a new wet-and-wavy look.   Jamie Foxx clowned as he presented her award: “Aretha, we thank you for your classic music and your classic outfits. That hat your wore to Inauguration? That needs it’s own office!”

She shot right back and said: “I got options, Jamie, I got options.” If that’s the case she could’ve pulled one of those other options out of the closet or at the very least wore something to make her outfit look a little different (maybe she thought the hair did the trick?), but hey, when you’re The Queen of Soul, I guess you can do whatever you want.

Cheers for these outfits or a Sandman-style “Womp Womp!”?

Trend to Try: Fringe Bags

May 26th, 2010

Just watch where you swing that thing!

Fringe bags made a return this season thanks to designers like Marc Jacobs and Anna Sui sending them down the Spring 2010 runways. This time around the trend has a wider variety of colors, materials and sillouetes giving a lot more options to mach with your spring outfits.

Jennifer Lopez was on the fringe in a woven Jimmy Choo shoulder bag.

Shopping for the perfect bag? Remember this:

*A suede over-the-shoulder bag can dress up a flirty dress or jeans and a T-shirt.

*Brown is not the only option! Bold colors make these bags feel less cowgirl and more modern.

*Leather bags with chain fringe can take you everywhere from dinner to the club.

*Don’t get carreid away: you may be tempted to wear vests and boots that also have fringe detailing, but unless you’re channeling Pocahontas, best to let one fringy piece make the statement.

If you already own one of these bags tell me how you wear it! If you don’t: will you try or pass?

On the Scene: Gorgeous Gowns at the amFAR Gala in France

May 21st, 2010

Who was best dressed? VOTE!

Naomi Campbell, Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige and even Grace Jones were among the stars on the guest list at last nights amFAR’s charity gala at the Hotel du Cap in Antibes, France. Flowing gowns were the staple at the fete, which is annually one of the most glamorous events during the Cannes Film Festival, and pastels, sequins and feathers were popular touches this year. The best part of the night–besides the fashion–was that celebs raised $6.7 million for AIDS research!

Jennifer Lopez’s whimsical chiffon and feather Roberto Cavalli Couture frock with Chopard jewels was like something out of a fairy tale.

Mary J. Blige, who arrived in a sequined Gucci gown, rocked the party with a performance during the night.

Naomi Campbell looked like a million bucks in L’Wren Scott (and accessorized with her billionaire boyfriend, who also attended, on her arm).

Grace Jones stepped out in this two-toned satin number, accessorized with mesh gloves and one of her signature face mask. Lady Gaga who?

Tell us! Who wore it best?

Best Dress: J.Lo & Sanaa Lathan

December 10th, 2008

‘Tis the season for fancy frocks.

Major want on J.Lo’s dress. She looks hot.

Jennifer Lopez

However, when you make faces like that you give away how much you practice in front of the mirror. The “Do me, baby” face is played.

Aside from that, she looks radiant.

Gorgeous Women, Not So Gorge Clothes

October 7th, 2008

God, please let me look like I’m 20-something when I’m in my forties. Amen.

Halle Berry is gorgeous! And I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look anything less than fabulous, until now. I like both of Halle’s pieces, but they don’t belong together.

Halle Berry

If the cut of the skirt was high-waisted instead of a drop waist that makes you look like you have a tummy, I would be a fan. Looks like a pre-baby purchase…

Sidebar: I so need to get pregnant so I can have boobs like that.

Outfits That Shout, “Look At Me!”

September 26th, 2008

Mouth open like, “Whoa!”

Forget the sweet heels and baby-doll dresses of seasons past. This fall we’re moving away from girly styles and embracing our shapely silhouettes. So let’s work our curves, get noticed and make the cutie by the bar do a double take.

Tall, Over the Knee Boots. They’re very sexy and badgirl-esque, and also the perfect segue into a new season while you’re still wearing little summer dresses.

Personally, not a fan of Ri’s boots, but overall look is hot.
