Both stars sparkled in this mesh mini. Who did it better?
The Brian Lichtenberg “Gold Glitter Freakum” dress has been hitting the dance floor in Vegas this month with Kelis and Eva Marcille taking it for a spin.
Kelis piled on additions to the peek-a-boo party dress that she wore to host Marquee Mondays and accessorized with a studded leather jacket, booties and heavy gold jewelry. This is actually pretty toned down from the outfits she’s been spotted in recently.
Eva partied in Vegas earlier this month–sans tights–and let the dress shine by wearing it with a small necklace and studs earrings.
This dress style has gotten a lot of play over the past year but the sparkles on this version make it kind of fun. Which party girl do you think executed it the best?

“Who started it?” Who cares?
They say “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” but that doesn’t seem to be true in the entertainment industry today! There are a lot of artists throwing accusations that someone else is “stealing” their style and they seem to want that acknowledged (don’t even get me started on Lil’ Kim and Nicki Minaj). The latest: Rihanna’s stylist told the New York Daily News that Christina Aguilera is jacking Rih Rih’s style not Lady Gaga’s like many have implied since Aguilera came out with a new look for her latest album “Bionic.” “Seeing stuff–the black patent leather, the tutus and the spikes–reminds me of Rihanna more than Gaga,” Mariel Haenn told New York Daily News.
Does it really matter if Xtina was copying Rihanna or Gaga considering both of them have been accused of imitating a bunch of other people’s styles? Kelis has said that she did the short shaved hair way before Rihanna was on the scene. Grace Jones claimed that Lady Gaga was “copying her” and that she was doing many of the current “trends” decades ago. Then, of course, there’s Madonna, who has undoubtedly inspires both artists, and even Madge did her own share of swagger jacking from icons like Marilyn Monroe.
My take? “Edgy” has become the new normal and in everyone’s quest to look different a lot of their style notes are starting to look the same! If we really want to give credit where credit is due, most artists images today aren’t even completely their own: they have stylists picking out their clothes and putting their outfits together in the first place. To that point I can see why Mariel Haenn might want to chime into the “copy cat” debate but it’s almost pointless. We could play the copy cat game all day until everyone looks like an imitator.

The verdict’s out: you decide!
Kelis has always had an eclectic style but lately she’s really been pushing the envelope: the gray hair and rat tail, furs that had the PETA’s panties in a bunch, this (Kelis…blindfold me!). Which is why I was surprised to see that she arrived at ELLE magazine’s first “Women in Music” event at New York City’s Highline Ballroom a bit tamed out.
She’s doing red hair now and punched up her grey dress and sparkly jacket with chunky drop earrings and multi colored bangles. She looked even more Bossy without the cover up.
But it wouldn’t be Kelis if she didn’t take it a step further. The singer took to the stage to perform a remix of “Milkshake” mashed up with Madonna’s “Holiday”, “Trick Me” and her new song “Acapella” from her upcoming Flesh Tone album in this…interesting outfit.
Checkers, flowers and that hat?
Back in May Kelis told MTV she dresses “honestly” and gave her style philosophy:
“The way that someone dresses is kind of your calling card or resume in a sense without speaking. When I walk into a room no matter what it is I’m wearing, whatever mood I woke up in that day, people are going to judge you off of what they first see. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing it’s a fact. It is what it is. I can’t say that I dress to provoke any kind of thought. I don’t really care what people think. I don’t ever have any regrets about anything I do, at the time it feels right.”
That’s what I’m talking about. Whatever you wear own it!
Are you feeling Kelis’ fearless style?

She’s made plenty of money and is married to Nas. She’ll be fine.
Remember when everybody was riding Kelis’ coattail like
they are we are riding Rihanna’s now.
Today, my girl can’t even sell records.
She needs a clothing line. Fragrance. New album. Something, stat!
