Shop it! Angie Martinez Launches Online Charity

Get chic for a cause.

Good news for the celebrity fashion obsessed! Radio personality Angie Martinez announced the launch of her new online charity, “Angie’s Guest Closet,” where you can place a bid on designer clothes from your favorite stars including handbags, sunglasses, jackets, jewelry and shoes.   The virtual celebrity closet’s debut auction will kick off tomorrow, Oct. 15th, with items straight from the wardrobes of  Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Idris Elba and Kim Kardashian, among others.

“With the launch of ‘Angie’s Guest Closet,’ I’m hoping to combine our guilty pleasure of shopping and all things celebrity with charity,” Martinez said in a press release. The Hot 97 ledgend calls the effort a “tribute to my mother, Shirley Maldonado, a breast cancer survivor, and all those confronting the cancer battle.”

Mary J. Blige’s Sweet Smell of Success

Hit that high note, Mary!

Like most performers Mary J. Blige has realized that side hustles are where the money’s at and she’s really got a lot of great stuff going on!  She’s launching sunglasses, has helped out with a charity line and now she’s breaking records with her latest collab: a new fragrance from the Carol’s Daughter called “My Life,” a nod to her her 1994 album of the same title.  Mary made HSN history over the weekend with the debut of her very first scent when she sold a record-breaking 60,000 units. Diddy previously held the HSN record for most fragrances sold with his “I Am King” scent but your girl outsold him in sales and revenue grossing an estimated $2.7 million (take that!).

The best thing about this new scent which Mary calls “a reflection of her personality” is that $1 from each sale went to benifit the R&B diva’s FAWN (Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now). The singer gushed about the scent’s success on Twitter: “Thank you so much!!!!!!! What an amazing support system!!!! You guys are the best!!!!!!… You saved so many lives and dreams tonight with your purchase!!! So many women will be getting the second chance they deserve!!! FFAWN…Thank You HSN for the love and support you showed me and my fam!!!!!! We really appreciate it!!!!!!”

I’m really feeling Mary for all the giving back she’s doing right now! Extra points because she’s also offering products that’ll keep us fresh!

Mary J. Blige and Catherine Malandrino Collaborate for Charity

Giving back, in style!

Mary J. Blige recently announced she’s dabbling in fashion design–by way of sunglasses–and now the R&B  power-voice has her first fashion show under her belt! In perhaps one of her most interesting collabs, Mary  joined forces with designer Catherine Malandrino to put on a runway show last night of 25 looks including leather jackets, jumpers and dresses at New York’s Museum of Modern Arts. Thickets to the event were $1,000 a seat, but the proceeds will go to the FFAWN (Foundation for the Achievement of Women Now)  and help cover college tuition costs for thirty graduates at the Women’s Academy of Excellence in the Bronx.

Mary founded FFAWN in 2008 with a mission to “Inspire women from all walks of life to gain the confidence and skills they need to reach their individual potential” and Catherine Malandrino, a friend of the singer’s for years, sits on the board of directors of the foundation.   The duo also produced a line of custom painted T-shirts earlier this year, that benefited the foundation. ”“Mary and I share a very strong sense of heart, faith, soul and life that we bring to our work and hope to share with women across the world. We wanted to design a capsule collection that was fun, accessible and delivers our messages of encouragement in a clear voice,” the designer said on her site. The tunic-style T-shirt line carried phrases like “I’m Free”, ‘I’m Love”, “I’m Power”, “I’m Good.”

On the Scene: Gorgeous Gowns at the amFAR Gala in France

Who was best dressed? VOTE!

Naomi Campbell, Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige and even Grace Jones were among the stars on the guest list at last nights amFAR’s charity gala at the Hotel du Cap in Antibes, France. Flowing gowns were the staple at the fete, which is annually one of the most glamorous events during the Cannes Film Festival, and pastels, sequins and feathers were popular touches this year. The best part of the night–besides the fashion–was that celebs raised $6.7 million for AIDS research!

Jennifer Lopez’s whimsical chiffon and feather Roberto Cavalli Couture frock with Chopard jewels was like something out of a fairy tale.

Mary J. Blige, who arrived in a sequined Gucci gown, rocked the party with a performance during the night.

Naomi

Naomi Campbell looked like a million bucks in L’Wren Scott (and accessorized with her billionaire boyfriend, who also attended, on her arm).

Grace Jones stepped out in this two-toned satin number, accessorized with mesh gloves and one of her signature face mask. Lady Gaga who?

Mary J. Blige to Launch New Sunglasses Line

Mary J. Blige Yes Mary! Get paid to rock shades!

R&B diva Mary J. Blige has joined forces with Interscope Records Chairman Jimmy Iovine and Orange 21 Inc. to develop her own sunglass line: Melodies by MJB.  The line is slated to launch in Fall 2010 and will feature 4 styles of shades (including the ones MJB models above) with 20 color options. A second, more extensive, collection will launch in Spring 2011.

“To reach out beyond music, an artist has to become involved with something they’re already associated with and truly feel passionate about and not just stick their name on someone else’s product,” Ivone said in a press release. ”As her fans know, Mary loves fashion and she especially loves sunglasses, making Melodies by MJB a natural fit for her.”

Mary’s been wearing shades on her album covers, on the streets, inside, at night, all the time since the ’90s (her sunnys in the “Not Gon’ Cry”video made me vow as a youngster if I ever did need to shed a tear over a man, I better have some over-sized shades on deck!). I can’t think of a better way for her to test out the designing waters.
