Summary: The Navy attempts to save the world from aliens at sea.
Review: “You sunk my battleship!” is the line from the legendary Hasbro board game that is now a feature length, sci-fi/action adventure film. Even without knowing the film’s plot, one can imagine the movie will be no classic. Therefore, the stakes are wildly low, explosions and fight scenes will suffice for a flick that has no expectations of brain and wit — and Battleship brazenly lacks both.
The movie opens with a dopey scene based around a chicken burrito, then transitions to a spoiled slacker, Lieutenant Alex Hopper, who is threatened to be kicked out of the Navy if he doesn’t become a better solider. On a training session, aliens attack and it’s in Alex’s hands to save the planet. In addition, maybe he will prove to his girlfriend’s father — who happens to be his commanding officer — that he will be a good husband. A standard, formulaic flick that is a low-budget hodgepodge of Deep Impact, Armageddon and Transformers with useless emotional punch that seems pulled from Gossip Girl. But there’s a lot of explosions!
That said, I thought the Peter Berg produced and directed film could not redeem itself, Battleship had a good dose of eye-popping action and special effects. Once Battleship got started, the film moved quickly with a fiery energy that border-lined on being a solid action flick.
We can’t forget Rihanna, who made a smart move by taking a small role in Battleship as Petty Officer Cora, a fearless, tough chick. She wasn’t in the film enough to know if she can act, but she wasn’t in the film enough to know if she can’t act. Nonetheless, her safe role was admirable considering some pop stars want to dive into a leading role when they are unprepared and clearly struggling on screen. Side note: Rih’s hat deserves recognition! That cap was sealed on her head — weathering ocean waters and alien attacks! Who needs a lace front with a hat like Rih’s?
The best character in the film was double amputee Colonel Gregory D. Gadson who played Lieutenant Colonel Mick Canales. The 20-year Army vet gave Battleship some soul and credibility. While Battleship definitely has an all-American political agenda that would make Republicans cheer, Gadson was a stamp of approval and a joy to watch.
Battleship is in theaters now.

We are all wondering who will play the female lead in The Bodyguard, which, as we reported last week, is in the process of being remade. Names are floating around, including Miley Cyrus. However, another pop star rumored to be in the mix is the “Umbrella” diva Rihanna. But Whitney fans don’t have to worry: Rihanna recently responded to the rumors and gave a resounding “Absolutely not!”
The Barbados native told OK! Magazine, “I hate it when singers do singing movies all the time because you can never look at them as anybody else,” she said. “I want to separate the two. I want to play a character. My whole life is playing Rihanna—being a singer won’t be a stretch for me. I like challenges, and being an actor is playing a role, being able to step into somebody else’s shoes, that’s the excitement.”
When singers do “singing movies”? Is that a slight diss to Beyoncé? I am sure actresses in Hollywood are tried of singers taking movie roles. But The Bodyguard is a film made for a singer, and no one did it better than Whitney Houston. (Side note: The role was originally for Madonna.)
Whatever the case, I appreciate Rihanna looking to challenge herself. Her first film role will be in Battleship, which is currently in production and set to hit in theaters in 2012.

It was only a matter of time! The pop diva has yet to act in television or film, but E! confirmed Rihanna has a role in the upcoming action film Battleship, which stars Alexander Skarsgård from True Blood. Battleship is the story of two brothers who fight to save their planet from evil forces. The movie will be directed by the director of Hancock, Peter Berg.
This will be her feature-film debut but there is no word on how big her role is or what her role is. However, I think it’s good Rihanna will start in an action flick, which will more than likely be about the look and stunts versus hardcore acting.
What type of actress do you think Rihanna will be?

The Drew Barrymore-produced Charlie’s Angels is coming back for a third installment and word on the street is that Rihanna is in the running to be an angel.
The Charlie’s Angels films are based on the popular television series in the seventies that made Farrah Fawcett a household name. Drew Barrymore stared in the successful 2000 film version along with Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu. They returned for a sequel in 2003, which wasn’t as successful as the first but was still a box office hit.
Rihanna could possibly be an angel, however, no one has seen her acting skills. Also, the ongoing argument is that Black actresses are losing gigs to pop stars. I would love to see some other “Angels” considered like Jurnee Smollett, Zoe Kravitz or maybe someone along the lines of a Gabrielle Union, Jada Pinkett-Smith, or Sanaa Lathan.
Rihanna is supposedly already set to star in remake of 1985’s The Last Dragon. The pop star will play the role of Laura Charles, which was originally played by eighties vixen Vanity.
Who could you see as an angel?
