The Smiths and The Carters Team For Film Venture

Published by Clay Cane on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 8:44 am.

Looks like Tyler Perry won’t be the only one having control over his own films. Will and Jada Smith are teaming up with Beyonce and Jay-Z for a joint film venture, which will start with Willow Smith starring in a remake of Annie. Jay-Z said in a recent statement, “The Overbrook Entertainment family and I have a unified vision. We’ve already produced a Tony Award-winning play and we’re developing a true superstar in Willow. This venture into film development and production is a perfect next step with teams that are accomplished, creative and innovative.”

They already teamed together for the Tony Award-winning Fela!. In addition, Overbrook Entertainment has been behind films like I Am Legend, Hancock and last year’s blockbuster The Karate Kid.  This seems like a venture built in cinematic heaven.  Will Smith is one of the top grossing actors of all time and knows a good movie when he sees it.  Jay-Z is clearly a powerful business man — being behind Fela!, which was a risk that paid off, was extremely important, especially when Broadway shows about Black or African culture is rare.

Jada Talks Open Marriage Rumors

Published by Clay Cane on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at 1:38 pm.

People have been trying to say for years that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are in an open marriage or bisexual. Recently, Jada, whose second season of Hawthrone debuted this week, candidly dealt with the rumors.

We always have people that were attracted to that we talk about. That don’t stop just because your married. Somebody’s always gonna catch your eye. That’s real. Somebody’s gonna always be prettier than me, and somebody’s always gonna be more in awe of him than me and he gonna be like [in Will's voice] ‘yo she really like me,’ but as far as somebody being right for us…is there somebody right for a nice night? Maybe. But somebody that can sustain our life and sustain what we’ve built together, absolutely not!”

Sounds like a solid answer to me and a great way to have honesty in their relationship. Back up off Will and Jada!

Men In Black 3D

Published by Clay Cane on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 9:30 am.

willsTen years after Men in Black II, Men in Black 3D will be in theaters May 25, 2012. According to Deadline.com, Will Smith has already signed on and there are negotiations to get Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin to return. The same director from the sequel, Barry Sonnenfeld, is set to direct the third. According to Deadline.com:

The project has been in the prep stage for some time, but didn’t become real until Smith chose it over several “next film” candidates. His decision to put on the sunglasses and dark suit gives Sony a killer 2012: the studio previously set a July 3, 2012 release date for its Spider-Man relaunch, which also will be shot in 3D. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald return as MIB3 producers, and Steven Spielberg will be executive producer.

It has long been expected MIB3 would be next for Smith, who last starred in 2008’s Seven Pounds and then took the time to be a very hands on producer in the China-shot Karate Kid remake that stars his son, Jaden (which Columbia releases June 11).

Third versions are always risky, especially ten years after the sequel.  However, Will Smith is the king of action films and I’m sure many people will look forward to him in a fun popcorn flick versus his heavier material.  Now, 3D — with the exception of Avatar, 3D has seemed like a waste of time, but if it is done right this could be another blockbuster smash.

Are you looking forward to a third installment of Men in Black?

‘The Karate Kid’ Trailer

Published by Clay Cane on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at 9:13 am.

The Karate Kid trailer has hit the web.  The film opens June 11th and stars Jaden Smith, Taraji P. Henson and Jackie Chan.  Only thing is — from the trailer, the movie looks nothing like the original Karate Kid from 1984. I am not sure if this is a remake or a completely different movie.  Even Jackie Chan was recently confused and told MTV.com, “I don’t know [what it’s going to be called].  Probably ‘Kung Fu Kid’ in China and ‘Karate Kid’ in America. Maybe a different title? I don’t know. But mostly we’ve called it ‘The Kung Fu Kid.’”

Nonetheless, check out the trailer below!

Denzel and Will To Remake Cosby’s ‘Uptown Saturday Night’?

Published by Clay Cane on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 12:00 am.

denzelwillBefore Bill Cosby was America’s favorite dad, he starred in a 1974 movie called Uptown Saturday Night opposite Sidney Poitier.  Cosby and Poitier play friends who are robbed at a nightclub.  The culprit took Cosby’s wallet, which had a winning lottery ticket and the two must find a way to get the wallet back.  The movie is considered a comedy classic, especially with the all-star cast that included Flip Wilson and Richard Pryor.

Will Smith’s production company is supposedly looking for writers to create a modern version of the flick.  Names like  Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence have been tossed around to play alongside Smith.  However, Pajiba.com recently reported Denzel Washington is attached to the project.

It would be great to see these two mega stars team up for flick.  Denzel Washington rarely ever catches a brick and Will Smith’s movie history is pretty consistent.  We can expect some comedy and cinemtatic gold out of these two veterns.

But, the duo I am still looking forward to is Martin and Jamie Foxx in the Sheneneh and Wanda movie!

This Day In Film: ‘Six Degrees of Separation’

Published by Clay Cane on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at 12:00 am.

Sixteen years ago today, Will Smith’s film, Six Degrees of Separation, hit theaters across the nation. In 1993, Smith was already a household name with Grammy winning hip-hop songs like “Summertime” and starring in NBC’s The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The teen dream took an extreme risk in Six Degrees of Separation, playing a gay man who cons an Upper East Side couple by perpetrating as Sidney Poetier’s son.

Smith was praised across the board for portraying a role that was out-of-the box for his hip-hop and television persona. Variety raved, “Smith proves himself an extremely charismatic presence, convincing in his sincerity and cunning in conveying his ability as a human sponge.”  Even recently, in a review for the DVD release, MovieHabit.com praised, “A humble actor in a serious role.” Six Degrees of Separation racked in over $6.45 million dollars and would rank 133 at the box office for 1993.

Smith’s next film, 1995’s Bad Boys, began an endless string of blockbusters. It’s easy to see why 15 years later Jada’s man is the only actor in history to have eighth consecutive films gross $100 million.

‘Bad Boys 3′?

Published by Clay Cane on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at 12:00 am.

will-smith-picture-1.jpgThe bad boys are back, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, for the third installment of the popular franchise that was a hit in 1995 and 2003. The movies have grossed over $400 million worldwide and have included Gabrielle Union and Theresa Randle.  According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Columbia Pictures is developing a third installment of the high-octane “Bad Boys” franchise, tapping Peter Craig to pen the screenplay.

The hope is to have a script that would reunite director Michael Bay, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. At this point, with the project in the early stages, none has a deal to return.

As of now, there is just a “hope,” but I can’t imagine Bad Boys without Will Smith or Martin Lawrence.  I am sure those will be some harder salaries to match.  I just hope Martin doesn’t forget the Wanda and Sheneneh movie!

Everyone but Will Smith is taking a recession hit

Published by Clay Cane on Thursday, August 6, 2009 at 12:00 am.

willsA new article by The Los Angeles Times explains how even A-list actors are taking a deep pay cut from their ritzy salaries.  Once upon a time, Denzel Washington was paid $20 million per flick, but after re-signing up for Unstoppable, those digits were slashed to an undisclosed number.  Oscar winner Julia Roberts refused to take a paycut for The Proposal so the studio hired Sandra Bullock.  However, Will Smith’s paycheck isn’t suffering.

For basically everyone except Will Smith, salary quotes have evaporated, simply vanishing into thin air, as have the much-coveted first-dollar gross deals that top actors and filmmakers used to get. As one successful producer put it: “Quotes and first-dollar gross have just flown out the window — the studios simply won’t make those deals anymore,” he explained. “It’s all about what the role is worth in that particular movie. The studio pays for the lead actor or actress, but after that, well, the talent is just getting grinded. Everyone else is lucky to be working.”

Well, if actors are going from 20 to 10 million or 10 to 5 million — that doesn’t sound like too much suffering to me.

Do you think Hollywood should take a pay cut or are the actors already getting paid too much?

Aunt Viv: Will wasn’t that fresh…

Published by Clay Cane on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at 12:13 pm.

vivian-banksRemember almost twenty years ago when Will Smith was just a television star?  You know, on that show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.  Well, his television mom, actress Janet Hubert who played Aunt Vivian, is releasing a book and is blasting the Oscar nominee.  She frames him as selfish, afraid of competition and part of the reason why she was replaced — the running story had always been she left the show due to pregnancy. The memoir, Perfection Is Not A Sitcom Mom, is to be released in early 2010 and Black Voices received an excerpt.

“Smith had people around him who made sure no one outshone him. I was happy to see Don Cheadle become the quality actor that he is, and often wondered how he made it past one episode, as Hilary’s boyfriend, being such a fierce actor. No one could be on ‘The Tonight Show,’ that first season, except Will. And I mean no one.”

“I recall the lovely and incredibly talented Countess Vaughn coming to guest star. Oh my God! The day of table read, she was pee-in-your-pants funny. The writers were howling, we were howling, so I knew she was history – banished into the cornfield. Many years later, after she had her own show, I had to tell her when she asked me why. ‘Miss Janet why did I get cut from the episode,’ she asked? Simply, my darling, you were too good.”

She also goes into detail how they fired her and how it nearly ruined  her career and life.

Well, I’m not doubting Hubert’s story, the entertainment industry is vicious. However, I do recall when Aunt Viv was replaced that fans were disappointed and wanted the original Viv back.  Why would they fire her if she was so popular?  So is she saying the reason why she was fired is because she was too talented?  It should be noted, she doesn’t directly say Smith was responsible for her being fired.

I guess we will have to wait until 2010 for the answer…
