This Day in Film: Poetic JusticePublished by Clay Cane on Friday, July 23, 2010 at 9:26 am.
Exactly 17 years ago today, Poetic Justice opened in theaters nationwide. At the time, urban dramas were all the rage due to films like John Singleton’s Boyz N The Hood. Poetic Justice was Singleton’s first movie since the Oscar-nominated blockbuster and this time he was armed with some celebrity heavyweights – Janet Jackson and 2Pac.
Janet played a poet named Justice, who was struggling with grief when she comes across a cocky post office clerk named Lucky. Soon, she is on a ride up the Cali coast with his best friend and her best friend, played by the true standout in the film, Regina King.
Poetic Justice was picked apart by critics, but it still ended up grossing over $27 million at the box office and received an Oscar nod for Best Original Song for Janet’s “Again.”
