This Day in Film: X-Men

Ten years ago today the first installment of the successful X-Men franchise opened in theaters nationwide. The film brought together legendary X-Men characters like Wolverine, Rogue, Professor Xavier, Magneto and of course Halle Berry as Storm.
Some X-Men fans felt Halle didn’t fit as Storm. According to Wikipeida, Angela Bassett and Jada Pinkett Smith were offered the role of Storm but turned it down. Halle Berry took the role and this was before she won her Oscar — many complained Storm’s role was too small. By the sequel, Halle was an Oscar-winner and Storm became a vital part to the plot.
Directed by Bryan Singer, X-Men was a huge hit. The film grossed over 296 million worldwide and inspired a new crop of films based on comic books to come out in the next ten years.

Every person who grew up watching the X-Men cartoons would love to see something like this that’s why it was such a huge hit. We never imagined that our favorite cartoons would become in real life (back when we didn’t know Hollywood could make BIG movies like this).
