Whoopi Goldberg Says She Thought She Would Win For “The Color Purple”

whoopiWhenever cast members from 1985’s The Color Purple talk about the shock of being nominated for eleven Academy Awards and losing all of them, I immediately listen!  Precious made history by being the only film with a Black director and predominately Black cast receiving so many nods and one cannot help but make The Color Purple comparisons (even though the film had a White director).

Today on The View Whoopi Goldberg talked about her best actress nod for The Color Purple and said,  “I thought I might win for The Color Purple – I thought I would!”  Sherri Shepherd added, “We thought you would!”  Goldberg continued, “I realized there maybe other opportunities for me but I should be very careful saying what is going to happen when I’m not sure.”

Whoopi also said she lost to a brilliant actress named Geraldine Paige.  Whoopi would late win an Oscar for best supporting actress in 1990’s Ghost.

Whoopi you deserved to win. You did an outstanding job. You have to remember that OSCAR did not respect us back then and still don’t. Halle Berry is a very talented actress and she won for Monsters Ball. Denzel is the man, period, and he won for Training Day. What does that tell you? I pray that Mo’Nique wins because she played the hell out of that role; but so did you. Maybe one day things will be different.

WHAT I’M ABOUT TO SUGGEST HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PREVIOUS COMMENTS, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE BET OR TELEVISION IT SELF PRIOND PLAY THE 1994 FILM/MOVIE “OUT OF DARKNESS” LEADING ROLE PLAYED BY DIANA ROSS. AT THE TIME I WAS 11YRS OLD AND I STILL TO THIS DAY REMEMBER THE MOVIE VERY VIVIDLY BECAUSE SHE PLAY THE ROLE PART SO OUTSTANDEN I FELT SHE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN MORE THAN AN GOLDEN GLOBE BECAUSE SHE IS THE ONLY ACTRESS WHO DISPLAYED THE ROLE OF A SHIZOPHRANIC CORRECTLY MOREOVER ANY OTHER ACTOR/ACTRESS. AND WHEN IS A NEW COLLEGE HILL EPISODE GOING TO BE SHOWN LIKE REALLY!

@ Tondia Nesbitt I simply loved that movie with Diana Ross. I thought her performance was amazing!! As far as Whoopie, I’ve always respected her as a great actress & hope one day to work with her. Award or no award, it doesn’t lessen her fantastic performance in The Color Purple!!
