Top 20 Black Characters in Gaming: #1 Carl “CJ” Johnson – Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
February 27th, 2009What’s up people. For Black History Month, we’ve decided to cull together a list of the Top 20 Black Characters in Gaming. Counting down from 20, we’ll be hitting you with a new one each week day until we get to number 1. Let’s get to it:
#1 on TGH’z Top Black Video Game Characters is none other than Carl Johnson – Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
What up Cuz? Probably the most polarizing video game in the history of gaming with the ultimate cheat code entitled “Hot Coffee”. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas served as the pinnacle of what Rockstar Games could accomplish on the last gen systems.
With a story straight out of Boyz in the hood or Menance ll Sociey, gamers took on the role of CJ, returning home to “Cali” from NY after learning of his mother’s murder. His old hood is in shambles and his old gang just aint cutting it anymore. Ya’ll pretty much know the story of this game because everyone in the history of everyone played it.
The reason CJ is number one on this list, is for the fact that while we may not like to admit it, he is real. There are people just like CJ walking around in real life. One of the first games not to shy away from the “N” word, GTA: SA took a real look into the life of what it was like to be a gang banger in the early 90’s. This game could’ve been woefully mistaken and made a parody, but it wasn’t. For the most part they nailed it. (Taking certain liberties because its a game of course).
There you have it. The Top 20 Black Characters in Gaming. Not too long ago this list would’ve been stuck at 5 and scrapping by to get 10, we now have 20 that can be debated and hopefully by the end of this year we’ll have more.
ok where do i began??? um u give credit to other black characters because they are not stereotypical but then have him as number one. How the hell do u have sonic on the list and not Spawn?!! There were people that deserve alot more to be on the list because the characters were strong complex and deep. I appreciate you actually had Garcian Smith on the list because that game killer 7 was not a hit and torque as well but some other people you have were just plain stupid. Jaguar from Neo Contra, Raven from Tekken should have been there just so much more but especially Spawn that’s like a crime not to include him seriously!!! Afro samurai should have definitely been in the top 3 but whatever at least you put him on the list. You got some hit with the list but alot of misses. Next time you need to do more research before you make a list like this.
