Are You Offended?

See a comparison between LeBron James and King Kong on the April issue of Vogue? One sports blogger does and takes issue with James’ decision to take such a shot.

Blogger writes: Some people who see the Vogue cover and see the inescapable similarities between King Kong and King James will blame Vogue and/or photographer Annie Leibovitz for the ape-like visage of James, mouth agape, all 6′9″, 260 pounds of his blackness charging out of the cover with Bundchen swept up in his arm and her in her best German-Euro version of Ann Darrow. Let’s break from the descriptions and call this like it is: King Kong. The Great Ape. King James. The Great Ni*ger…LeBron’s image clearly means a lot to him, maybe even as much as pursuing a championship. And that’s why I can’t understand why he would allow Vogue to feature him with supermodel Gisele Bundchen in such a distasteful manner. LeBron has Gisele in one hand and a basketball in the other. LeBron is dressed in basketball gear, with his muscles flexing, tattoos showing and bared teeth. Gisele, on the other hand, is wearing a gorgeous slim-fitting dress, and smiling.

Is the blogger too sensitive, or does he make a point?

When I first saw this cover a week ago, the first thing that went through my mind was King Kong. I find this image hugely offensive. We need to be careful of allowing others to misuse our images to perpetuate stereotypes.

This is not offensive at all. Anyone who thinks it is is just plain dumb. I think if anything the photog was trying to portray lebron in a powerful lt. Placing the rock in his hands and a pin thin model in the other. This is a great shot. The blogger infiltrated yall mind with the idea he look like a porch monkey. Black people and the power of suggestion. When are we going to realize that the whole world is not against us. Lets talk about how Lebron is only the 3rd man to grace the cover. Thats a great honor.

When I seen the two pictures in comparison nothing racial came to mind. Lebron is a talented man he plays ball like king kong he’s all over that court knockin it down!!! If you’ve ever seen the movie?? king kong is a heroic figure by saving the girl!!!. Stop thinking racial, it’s old and irritating, every race has it’s hard-ships!!! get over it.

I think the image of a famous black man or even any black man with a white women, is fine with me. Just wait until they find out what black women are not willing to put up with.

Good Lord!!! This is blatant proof that you can make something out of nothing!

l know for sure most people don’t care about it…but you can’t deny the similarities btwn the king kong stuff and this. lt could be just artistry…the vicious athlete and the girly model. l mean lawrence Taylor(NFL) would actually love for him to be portrayed like this so the whole thing depends. At the end of the day no many black care about it but it makes you wonder the real intentions though

who cares its him in the picture and if he’s okay with it we should be too. We shouldn’t read more in to it than it is. As black people we make fun of other races all the time and see nothing wrong with it but no one can make a joke about us, get over it already

The Honorable Elijah Muhammad says that within one thousand years after the white people were up in the caves they were on all fours. And they were living in the outdoors where it’s cold, just as cold over there as it is outside right now. They didn’t have clothes. So by being out there in the cold their hair got longer and longer. Hair grew all over their bodies. By being on all fours, the end of their spine begin to grow. They grew a little tail that came out from the end of their spine…Oh yes, this was the white man, brother, up in the caves of Europe.

I wish that we as a people would stop making everything into something racial. Do you honestly think, as an intelligent black man, that Lebron would agree to this if he himself thought it was racial? Would you do it if you thought it was a form of racism? The answer is no! Let’s give Lebron some credit here. Yes, there are a lot of racial undertones surrounding us, this however, is not one of them. Stop focusing on the negative, and concentrate on the positive. As someone else stated, Lebron is one of few men who have been on the cover of this magazine. Let’s leave it at that

it probably wouldn’t be a big deal..if you concentrate on it so hard. because i would have never guess that it “might” have been a imitation of king kong…you can’t be serious

I didn’t think of that until someone put it up as a comparison, but I really think that it was just a photoshoot with nothing harmful intended as a result. I have to admit our community is a bit too sensitive sometimes. Would it have been such a big deal if an African-American was the photographer? We’re destroying ourselves getting all worked up over nothing.

I made this point on my blog about two weeks ago. People claimed I was “seeing things,” so I feel vindicated in the fact that I wasn’t the only one t pick up on this vibe.

Hey i dont think its offensive and LBJ doesnt think its offensive either beacuse hes doing it so why does it matter! Its every white womans fantasy to have a big black rich man by her side why not!lol

An offense is something you have to take. I am so tired of the black race choosing to be offended. Lets choose not to be for a change. Woe to the one who brings the offense. Life is too too short to concentrate on the mag calling him a black ape lets concentrate on the fact that he is on a world wide mag. We have been called worse. Racism is never going anywhere off either side. What are the sides? Glad you asked. Its a right side and a wrong side. Which side are you on???????

Rissa Said on

I personally don’t think its offensive at all. We as African Americans need to slow down and actually take a look at the picture before we jump to a conclusion. Do you really think Lebron would have did the cover if he felt offended by it??? NO! I look at it like this… What does Lebron do, play ball. Is he good? Yes, he is GREAT. He is a BEAST on the court. All the time. Every game. And just maybe they threw in the women to make it more appealing to the eye. I mean, it is a women’s magizine. Right? So lets actually think before we speak.

This one is a toss up. I’m a die hard King James fan and when I seen the cover, I was proud and confused at the same time. I wonder what King James has to say.
