Update: Alicia Keys on Gangsta Rap

Here’s Alicia Keys on the May cover of Blender mag, in which she shares her theories on the why gangsta rap created.
“‘Gangsta rap’ was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other. ‘Gangsta rap’ didn’t exist.” She says that the rivalry between slain artists Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. was fueled “by the government and the media, to stop another great black leader from existing.”
Does anyone else out there believe that?
Keys is now saying that Blender misrepresented what she said during the interview with Blender: “My comments about gangsta rap were in no way trying to suggest that the government is responsible for creating this genre of rap music,” Keys said in a statement issued by J Records.”We stand by our story,” Blender spokeswoman Kate Cafaro said Tuesday.
I’ve never met Alicia Keyes, but she must be pretty smart to be so succesful. However, this is one of the silliest things I have ever heard. And as a black man, it is really insulting to me.
If the US Government really wanted to bring down the black man, why would they create a music genre that made hundreds of thousands of black men very wealthy? A few black men were killed along the way, but a lot of people in our community have benefited from this genre. In addition, gangster rap led to the calmer rap music we hear today.
It is very sad that Tupac and BIG died, but what qualities did Tupac and BIG demonstrate that would make them great leaders of our community? I don’t think they did anything to bring us up really…they just brought us down with their actions. If you want a great leader, look up to people like Bill Cosby.

Damn, do black people take responsibility for anything? So now any little black thug that wants to be a rapper (which is all of them) is another victim of white folk?
I guess to make it right, the gov’t needs to outlaw all rap music to save the black community.

I love Alicia, but I don’t think the government created gangsta rap. Now if she’s talking about the police brutality, drugs, guns, and liquor stores on every corner in urban areas, that is the cause not the creation. We have to stop blaming other people for our shortcomings. She said gangsta rap was a ploy to get black people to kill each other. I can’t speak for everyone else but I know I am intelligent enough to know, if someone put a gun in my hand and tell me to kill another person it is my choice not to pull that trigger. I also resent the fact that she thinks we are to stupid to know when we’re being setup. As the saying goes you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. As for the Tupac and Big rivalry, the media did have a large part in keeping that going, but again I don’t think the government was involved. We all saw the video of Tupac stomp a guy out in Vegas. How was the govt responsible for his actions? Because that’s what go him killed, his actions. Stomping a possible gang member and that person retaliated in a fatal way. We all know this world is messed up big time and the govt is the cause for most of it , but come on people gangsta rap and east/west rivalry? I don’t think so.

I love Alicia, she is a very taleneted person but not at all right. I myself don’t belive the govt created any type ploy gangsta rap, gang members created gangsta rap and the goverment didn’t created Gangs. GANGS started in the 70’s within the black communites among young men claim streets that they lived among! I agree with Mahogany on many points about beening responsible for ur actions. Gangsta rap dosn’t have anything to do with the govt creating a ploy, because people that are TRUE GANGSTA RAPPERS know the reality of the streets because they been there and thats what they want to rap about to bring themselfs up out the hood or ghetto then let hem do it!TUPAC wasn’t a gangsta or gansta rapper he was a poet that grew up in the streets of NEW YORK and went to Cali and made it big because of his lyrics. But Tupac still the greatest rapper around Gangsta rap came out in the late 80’s do your research NWA! Remember that’s real gangsta rap Ice Cube still raps gangsta1! Whatca know bout that????
