Keshia Knight Pulliam: “I Stay Grounded”

In an interview with essence.com, Keshia Knight Pulliam — though she’ll always be Rudy from the Cosby Show to us — talks up her new role in Tyler Perry movie, Madea Goes To Jail. When asked how she managed to skirt the way of some child stars — drugs, crime, etc., here’s what she offered up:

“I think it’s learning from the mistakes of those before you. It’s very documented the rough route that other child stars have had. My family made sure my focus was to stay grounded, to stay humble. In my family, it’s not an option not to be. Taking that time off to grow emotionally, mentally and physically was a very deliberate thing; to just go to school and have those regular experiences in life. Through that, your self-worth isn’t grounded in Hollywood. It isn’t grounded in your next role. It’s grounded in real stuff—going to school, being a good person, those sorts of things. So I really attribute it to my upbringing.”

I would like to tell you a story about how in protecting my children, friends, and my own life from four armed women who were harassing me…I lost everything. I had my first child when I was 17 and the second six days after graduation, but I graduated with honors from honors classes. I became a certified nurse aide in 1994 and earned $9.00 per hour by 1998, but I lost the right to work in that field. I also had a fully funded grant and scholarship to Edinboro University and was stripped of the right to attend. I am forced to work in minimum wage positions that offer no advancement nor benefits for the type of individual I am. I’m now the single parent of three and I strive to take care of them (16, 15, and 11) and I’ve never received one child support check. Through Faith and God’s Good Grace, I Remain. Also, I lost my mother August 4, 2002 and life hasn’t been the same for me. I have a poem that I wrote for her that I would love to dedicate to Kanye and Jennifer Hudson…Can you please notify me of where to send it? THANK YOU
