I’m all for multi-tasking, but is it me or now more than ever does it seem like a Black actor has to be a staple of 106 & Park before they can make any headway in Hollywood?

I like Will Smith, I dig Queen Latifah, and don’t judge me, but I even like Beyoncé (sans the “hip hopera” thing) the actress.  But where are the trained actors?

It seems like they’re still alive, only their agents ought to help them create a new dance craze so they can garner a little more attention.

Such a move may aid the likes of Nicole Behaire, a young actress and product of Julliard who’s currently scoring a lot of buzz for her work in the upcoming film, American Violet.

On Behaire’s portrayal as Dee Roberts, Variety wrote, “…Beharie, in only her second screen role, is a real winner, bringing energy and fortitude to a woman who easily could have joined the ranks of society’s victims and losers. Bright things lie ahead for this charismatic thesp.”

I’m sure things would be even brighter for Behaire if she could dip it, pop it, twirk it, stop it.

Or maybe I’m being pessimistic. I just wouldn’t want an actress possibly capable of following in the footsteps of greats like Angela Bassett, Alfre Woodard, or Chip Fields (oh come on – Regine’s mama was good as Mrs. Gordon on Good Times) being overshadowed for not being a “triple threat.”

By the way, Xzibit stars alongside Behaire in the film…naturally.

American Violet is in theatres Friday, April 17th.
