Ne-Yo: Drop The Pounds

Published by Runteldat on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 12:00 am.

There are some people highly pissed at Ne-Yo for telling this young woman that in order to share the stage with the likes of Beyonce, she’s going to have to run some laps, do some pushups, and trade in that double cheeseburger with bacon and a side of heart failure for a nice salad.

I suppose the argument is that Ne-Yo used to complain about being told he wasn’t handsome enough to compete with the Usher’s and Justin Timberlake’s of the world. Yet he came into the game, lied about his age and pretended his face wasn’t there (hey, they questioned his looks, not me) and still managed to rack up in album sales and awards.

In other words, if he could do it why wouldn’t he go and encourage that young woman to continue to go and get her Popeye’s on.

I don’t think Ne-Yo was being offensive. He was being honest. As he put it, if she wanted to go the Jill Scott route she would be accepted for who she is. But in a world of Pop/R&B full of blond weaves, nose jobs, and butt pads she might want to look into fixing her look a bit.

It’s an inconvenient truth that looks matter in pop music (and in general). Could she record a song like “Upgrade U” and still manage to get the same amount of love as Beyonce? Anything is possible, but it’s not likely. Ne-Yo is right: In pop music, most are shallow.

You mad?

Ne-Yo is typical of many young people in today’s society. Art is inclusive…it does not exclude someone because of any ism.

Child please tell Ne-Yo when he come out the closet, then he can talk about anything he want to.

i think that he actually made a good point…i aint exactly a size 2, and i understand what he’s sayin…at least he didnt give her faulse hope…in my eyes, he just gave her tha truth

ne-yo made a very valid point and i agree with what he said but at the same time if that girl was to lose weight then she would just be like the rest of these artist. now i think its important that she knows how to perform without getting to tired but you can train yourself to do that without losing weight. if she conforms to what is expected in the music industry, she will lose her originality.

i think neyo is right but i dis agree to a point u have to break though da music

Ne-yo was being brutally honest with her. It is unfortunate that that business operates in that way, but it’s no secret. Your talent will take you far, but ultimately it IS a package deal. So you definitely need to know who you are, what you bring to the table, and know your strengths/weaknesses and act accordingly! Ne-yo says a lot of questionable/controversial things, but this one I can’t even be mad at.

I find it offensive. There are Jill Scott’s and Monique’s out here. If you have the talent, you can make it. Look at what they told Tacara. She is beautiful, talented and full bodied. And she’s doing well for herself and will probably do better in the future. It’s not his job to discourage people. If you can’t say something encouraging and in a “tactful” way, don’t say it. Who is he to crush someone’s dream?

First he was correct and I am a Thick Madam. I’m actually dieting because I want to live to see my kids graduate from High School. No we were not all made skinny but we all need to be healthy. Even Monique is getting healthy. If you are a thick lady and cant handle the pressure……stay in the kitchen.

I’m not saying Neyo didn’t have a point. But for him to say Beyonce was barely getting by was stupid she’s never been fat since she came on the seen. Fact, Beyonce is the baddest chick in the R&B business if she gained 50 pounds right now every chick would still want to be her and every guy would still want her. He also insinuated that because Jennifer Hudson’s a bigger girl she only got where she was because she got an oscar, untrue. Jennifer Hudson can sing her ass off and was already heading for a legitimate singing career before the oscar. Neyo had some point and it was good for him to be honest with that woman but he didn’t have to call out other artists just to prove his point. It’s not what he said it’s how he said. He’s pretty full of himself when he’s not all that cute himself. And isn’t he friends with Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce?

Ne-Yo, has a very good point and he was very truthful.

he hecca right. all i have to say is if neyo didnt tell her sure enough diddy would of taking examples from his shows..so he kept it real

Mermaid Said on

I’m with Ne-Yo on this one. He wasn’t being harsh to the girl. He was telling the truth. Diddy was like that to D. Woods on “Making the Band”. You can tell everydaythat that’s what you have to do in order to break into this business and stay there. The girl in the video can sing and all. But if she wants to be Beyonce famous, she’s going to have to lose some weight. If she wants to do “Erykah Badu & Jill Scott” music or gospel music, then she’s fine where she is. I would say, for health reasons, she should lose some weight. I’m no size 4, but I’m not a size 24 either. Obesity in America is crazy.

Its not what you say its how you say it nor is it what you do its how you do it.

I don’t think he was being negative in any way, he was informing her of what needed to be done in order to stand on the stage in the pop world. And the media is always calling out full-figured women in the industry.

hi booo

What is the prob with Ne-Yo telling her the way the industry is? He is right. That’s what pop is – a look and a sound (illusion).
