Fashion Flashback: MJ Influenced Style at the BET Awards

Published by Dior Noir on Monday, June 29, 2009 at 3:00 pm.

jamiefoxxThere’s already plenty of buzz surrounding last night’s BET Awards and while I was interested to see who would take home what award, I think we can all pretty much agree that everyone who tuned in was on the edge of their seats waiting to see what would be done to honor Michael Jackson.

Throughout all of the music and the moments paying homage to The King of Pop I was fixated on all of the the Michael-influenced fashions (No comment on Beyonce’s tiara-topped wedding/Victoria’s Secret Runway ensemble and T-Pain’s “Big A– Chain”)!  Michael’s trend-setting status, though more subtle than his musical impact, is undeniable.  From the leather jackets (specifically the red one in the “Beat It” video and the two-toned one in the “Thriller” video which designer Margiela recreated in 2008!), to the marching-band style jackets, to the sparkly socks and other distinct stage costumes you can definitely find traces of MJ’s style infused in the looks of stars like Beyonce, Rihanna, Usher and Chris Brown, just to name a few.

Last night I looked forward to seeing the stars bring it fashion-wise on the red carpet and during performances and while several kept their MJ nods low key by simply accessorizing with the iconic one-hand glove (shout out to Estelle, Alicia Keys, Day 26, Sean Paul etc!) some people really went all out with their outfits! Below were some of my favorites from the night.

Jamie Foxx

As the night’s host, Jamie Foxx made several wardrobe changes and each look had a Michael theme. Now I have a feeling he was fronting and playing the air guitar during this performance of “Blame It,” but he looked every bit a rock star and his tee was plenty Bad.

keri hilson

The curly coif, the cropped pants with socks, the sparkly top?  Keri Hilson won in my book! Miss Keri baby, Mike would’ve been proud of the way you nailed his look!

neyo

Now the original Gloved One would’ve at least had the decency to rock a hat (*side eye* this bald look…) but Ne-Yo gets some points for his crisp leather jacket and crimson gloves.

Ciara

I still don’t understand why Ciara did a sit-down ballad performance of “Heal The World” instead of, um, coming with an uptempo performance highlighting her strong suit: dancing, but at least she had the look down with this sequined and tassel detailed jacket.

Monica

Keyshia Cole’s bedazzled top and capris during this performance of “Trust” confused me, but Monica came with it modernizing Michael’s signature marching-band jacket style with long leather gloves and hip-hugging tights.

Ronnie devoe

Ronnie DeVoe of New Edition/B.B.D fame channeled the ABC-era Michael in a fringed vest, newsboy cap and shades.

Who do you think rocked Michael’s signature looks best?

I think that BET was wrong, they should have had Chris Brown do that whole Tribute to Michael Jackson. I think that he was the only artist could have perform that tribute. New Edition was ok for just doing the Jackson 5 but still think that BET made a mistake by not putting Chris Brown in that tribute. I’m hoping that anybody else that’s doing a tribute to Michael Jackson I hope they ask Chris Brown. That show would have been so much better then it was.

JanetJacksonFan Said on

I definitely agree with what many are saying, they should have just did a segment honoring the one and only MJ and then at a later time, a whole show honoring him. The show was actually not good, even though BET had great intentions. There were sooooo many songs that could have been performed that would have people up on their feet, that was not a celebration! But again, I’m not an employee of BET, so I’ll stop with the judgement!

Are you kidding me???? WOW BET you majorly missed the mark. I guess I can’t totally put the blame on you all because you can’t predict how artists are going to behave, but I’m thinking you should have at least had a clue that Lil Wayne wasn’t going to keep it clean. You would have been better off brining Mo’Nique or the Smiths back. I was highly disappointed with Jamie’s hosting. Can someone please remind him that he is an ACADEMY AWARD WINNING actor and should conduct himself as such. Since time was an issue what you should have done was went ahead with the awards show then did a tribute to MJ totally separate with acts who know how to be professional. I was embarrassed for the family that you all threw a show together like that and call it a dedication show to the King of Pop. He was our star and you all blew it BIG TIME. I agree……BET = Buffoonery Entertainment Television. You all need to be shut down, with the level of ghettoness that you have on your station and I’m just not talking about the awards show, I’m talking about your so called new shows. Does anyone really need to know about the life and times of Frankie & Neffy? REALLY??? In case you forgot, there is a black man in the white house and the world is watching. I NEVER thought I’d see the day where BET would play right into the stereotypes of what some races want to only box us in. You would have been better off just playing all the old tapes of the Jackson 5 and Michael’s countless music videos. Shame on You BET!

I KNOW BET HAD A SHORT TIME TO DO THE SHOW, but that’s the time you bring out the best people who you know that can do a good job. People like Chris Brown and Justin Timberlake .I know Usher was unavailable. Everyone said it was a horrible show.

okay first of all…let me sum up the whole award show with one word>>tacky…that was the most classless, tasteless, garbage award show ever. i was highly upset with the overall show. dont get me wrong, the awards had its moments>>ne-yo was wonderful, new edition, bbd>>wonderful…no complaints, but everything else was horrible…t-pain made us look like clowns with that rediculous chain, young money’s performance was sorry…jay z and beyonce were so irrelevent..like for real, and jamie foxx might have been under the influence, he was all over the place.my heart goes out to the beautiful janet jackson, and for her to have to sit through this tragic award show saddens me even more. there was no real tribute to MJ…at all…and i’ve been hearing rumors about jay z and beyonce saying they were going to pull out if chris brown showed up…that makes my blood boil. i believe that chris brown would’ve really set the mood for the show and paid real tribute. and beyonce and jay z’s performances were horrible, chris brown would’ve been the better choice for this awards… i mean lets be for real BET, CNN was there, and saw this tacky mess. its just embarrassing. and i am ashamed to say that BET is the network geared toward ppl of color when they can’t even manage to put on a decent tribute to some one who paved the way for many artist today…so so so horrible.i am devastated…BET should’ve pulled the awards back until they were better prepared to put on a proper show…its not like BET shows any other important programs anyway. horrible just horrible
and i’m out

I have to admit…the BET awards was good…seeing how they had three days to reconstruct a 6mth show…so to all those who are dwn playin the BET awards…yu try and do better…I dare yu!…Jamie did a superb job of hosting the show he really honord the KING OF MUSIC in my book. Ne-Yo did a great job (seeing how he performed like 5 times). Beyonce?? Idk…and based on that performance I never will…but it was good…even tho its not her single n it didn’t really say “hey this is in honor of ur legacy MJ”…tiss tiss. Having Lil`Wayne close the show…that’s where BET crossed the line WTF was that? I absolutely love Lil`Wayne n Yung Money, But that performance was traggic n every way. Drake needs an apology frm Lil`Wayne…how dare he ruin his performance? That was foul…smh! Janet coming out @ the end was classic…loved it!…well that’s my opinion…I Love BET…Good Job!

how can you have a tribute to michael jackson and not have chris brown !!!!!!!!!!!!!! if jay z and beyonce did not want to perform then chris should of twice.plus beyonce and jay z ’s performance were rubbish nothing to do with mj .poor janet having to sit through that.last year was soooooooooooooo much better

Mika Said on

I think it was wrong for Chris Brown not to be there to do his tribute to MJ…He would have nailed it….He is the best when it comes to doing MJ’s moves…It is a shame that Jay and Beyonce was the cause of him not being able to perform…when Beyonce’s performance was a hott mess and she looked a mess she is nothing and Jay aint too far behind her they should have cut both of them out and let Chris Brown perform…their performances had nothing to do with MJ…and Beyonce gone say this is for u MJ girl bye cause everyone knows its all about her with her fake self she dont care about know body that is better than her so for to dedicate that award to MJ was not sincere at all….I wish Chris would have showed up anyways if Rihanna forgives him so should we everyone makes mistakes but thats whats wrong with the public they bashin him just like they did MJ..

Some of you all shouldn’t be so upset over RUMORS. Beyonce and Jay-Z probably had nothing to do with Chris Brown being absent. It would have led to bad publicity for BET to have Chris Brown there. My guess is they chickened out on there own. Why is Beyonce held to a different standard? I didn’t see any complaints about Keisha Cole, Monica, Soulja Boy, Mary/Mary feat. Queen Latifah, Maxwell, Drake etc. performances having nothing to do with Michael Jackson. They left in the New Jack Swing stuff and the O’Jays dedication and some artist sang non-Michael songs but most of the show was revamped for Michael and I think that was sufficient w/such short notice. Besides, I heard Beyonce was set to perform Ego featuring Kanye West before Michael passed and changed it to Ave Maria/Angel, hence no Kanye performance. Beyonce gave a beautiful performance and dedicated her award to Michael, give the girl a break.

I was disappointed in the show. BET is losing it. Now they have the nerve to follow it with a Tiny and Toya show..(good move!!!!!!!trying to compete with Housewives) just the very ghetto version. Chris Brown should have been able to perform. JayZ has not always been an angel…..and neither has Sharpton… Also, if I was Catholic I would have been very offended with Beyonce performing that song in a bathing suit. I love “B”……but that was poor taste. Monica, Keisha Cole, and Mary Mary was great. Miss Michael ……RIP.

Famous Danish artist Zindy was devastated when she heard about Michael Jackson’s death and Zindy is also the first artist to write a Tribute song to MJ. You can download the song for Free now at http://www.zindy.com. It’s really a beautiful song and MJ deserves it. You can also share the song with your friends and let’s all sing this song for Michael together.

Michael Jackson was/is the most powerful, gentle spirit, and loving person I had a chance to know. He deserved all the recognition plus more.
It helps to hear him speak – in interviews before his death – it gave me an opportunity to know him much better. I pray for his children to be in a loving home but certainly not with Joe Jackson the “Child Abuser and Beater” if there was anything to say about Joe – he should be the one accused! Kick him to the curb Katherine!
Michael, I’ve been listening to your music for a very long time – you are an “Old Soul” you are “All Knowing” we love you and will miss you terribly. I wish it haden’t been so soon! God will take good care of you and certainly he will look after your children – what beautiful spirits!
Thank you Michael for leaving a legacy that will live on forever! Texas loves you and will miss you!
In Spirit and Much Love, Judy & Ginny too!
