Fashion Flashback: MJ Influenced Style at the BET Awards

Published by Dior Noir on Monday, June 29, 2009 at 3:00 pm.

jamiefoxxThere’s already plenty of buzz surrounding last night’s BET Awards and while I was interested to see who would take home what award, I think we can all pretty much agree that everyone who tuned in was on the edge of their seats waiting to see what would be done to honor Michael Jackson.

Throughout all of the music and the moments paying homage to The King of Pop I was fixated on all of the the Michael-influenced fashions (No comment on Beyonce’s tiara-topped wedding/Victoria’s Secret Runway ensemble and T-Pain’s “Big A– Chain”)!  Michael’s trend-setting status, though more subtle than his musical impact, is undeniable.  From the leather jackets (specifically the red one in the “Beat It” video and the two-toned one in the “Thriller” video which designer Margiela recreated in 2008!), to the marching-band style jackets, to the sparkly socks and other distinct stage costumes you can definitely find traces of MJ’s style infused in the looks of stars like Beyonce, Rihanna, Usher and Chris Brown, just to name a few.

Last night I looked forward to seeing the stars bring it fashion-wise on the red carpet and during performances and while several kept their MJ nods low key by simply accessorizing with the iconic one-hand glove (shout out to Estelle, Alicia Keys, Day 26, Sean Paul etc!) some people really went all out with their outfits! Below were some of my favorites from the night.

Jamie Foxx

As the night’s host, Jamie Foxx made several wardrobe changes and each look had a Michael theme. Now I have a feeling he was fronting and playing the air guitar during this performance of “Blame It,” but he looked every bit a rock star and his tee was plenty Bad.

keri hilson

The curly coif, the cropped pants with socks, the sparkly top?  Keri Hilson won in my book! Miss Keri baby, Mike would’ve been proud of the way you nailed his look!

neyo

Now the original Gloved One would’ve at least had the decency to rock a hat (*side eye* this bald look…) but Ne-Yo gets some points for his crisp leather jacket and crimson gloves.

Ciara

I still don’t understand why Ciara did a sit-down ballad performance of “Heal The World” instead of, um, coming with an uptempo performance highlighting her strong suit: dancing, but at least she had the look down with this sequined and tassel detailed jacket.

Monica

Keyshia Cole’s bedazzled top and capris during this performance of “Trust” confused me, but Monica came with it modernizing Michael’s signature marching-band jacket style with long leather gloves and hip-hugging tights.

Ronnie devoe

Ronnie DeVoe of New Edition/B.B.D fame channeled the ABC-era Michael in a fringed vest, newsboy cap and shades.

Who do you think rocked Michael’s signature looks best?

I was very disappointed
what was Beyonce wearing?
What was up with the Ving Rhames skit , not appropriate nor funny
Jamie Foxx was not funny the majority of the time
The New Edition song at the beginning was if it was not well rehearsed
It was just plain silly at times
Lil Wayne??why the profanity

B'kor Said on

My question for Keri Hilson when ever you check your self in the entertainment mirror did you see you self or did you see Rihanna? however for ones i love her dress she looks like a lady for the night. Keri need to start using auto-tune because her vocally was off key just like Keyshia Cole period.

I am sooo disappointed with BET. That show was horrible! I sat and watched with my grandchildren because it was supose to be a tribute to Michael Jackson, seemed more like a tribute to Jamie Fox. Why does BET
allow profanity and Jamie Fox has a dirty mouth! His comment about Maxwell was uncalled for and what was Ving R doing? I was appalled! Why would a show that was to be a tribute to MJ become a ghetto, vulgar mess.
What was that mess Beyonce did? She needs to start wearing clothes.
Alicia Keys seemed out of place because she’s so classy. My friend called me from ATL and said how disappointed she was, it was a messed up show and I feel sorry for viewers that were expecting more!

I wa not going to say anything but htis has really bothered me..I really do not know how true this is or not but i must comment.I heard on the radio that it was said the reason Chris Brown was not on the show is due to Jay Z threating to pull out. if this is not true then i apologize for what i am about to say.i am a older fan of MJ, i also like Jay Z..Chris Brown is a very talented young man that i believe has mant situation that are above what the tabloids are putting out there.Until you have walked in a person shoes no one knows the reason for a person’s actions…I must say i was very disappointed if this is the reason he was not on the show. I believe Michael was a big inspiration to CB and that Last night was not about Jay Z although his preformance was on point. Chris Brown was the only person that could have Electrified that stage with Michael Jackson’s moves.I believe all things should have been put on the back burner in order to pay the right type of show in honor of Michael Jackson..You know to me Jay Z albums were going to continue to sell regardless if Chris performed or not.. This was bigger then Jay Z and he has managed to bother me with this if this is true..He talk about how grown he is on 30 something so if he went here than maybe that song is not the truth…Although i be no means support what happened with Chris and Rhianna i do believe last night at the awards was not the time to show his power.Chris Brown should have preformed no matter who was pissed because believe me everyone would have still tuned into BET had you choose to have him on there…I will truly miss Michael Jackson and i think BET if you were going to pay tribute to Michael Jackson. Chris Brown would have turned that tribute all the way out in a way none of the other preformers did, that young man could not duplicate MJ but he could have took you back to Michael Jackson the real way!!!! I was very Disappointed in This Tribute foreal and i pray with all my heart Jay Z was not the reason you left Chris Brown out of this show….

wanda Said on

R.I.P MJ and i pray with all my heart MTV does a tribute and have Chris Brown, Neyo,Ciarra,Usher and whomever else that can dance do it the right way!!

mjfan Said on

i am sorry to say that i was very disappointed by the MJ tribute at the BET awards. even if it was in 3 days y’all could have done a better job. i think it was very disrespectful to the king of pop.

BET SHOULD DO A WHOLE NEW SHOW AS A TRIBUTE TO MJ AND HAVE BETTER PERFORMANCES.

RIP MJ KING OF POP NOT TO SAY MUSIC.

Juanita Said on

I JUST WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT I THINK BET DID A FANTASTIC JOB . DUE TO THE FACT THAT THEY HAD ONLY THREE DAYS TO PUT THIS TOGETHER. IF MTV THOSE IT BETTER GOOD FOR THEM. BET WAS JUST TRYING TO HONOR THE KING OF POP. IT WASN’T LIKE THEY KNEW MICHAEL JACKSON WAS GOING TO PASS RIGHT BEFORE THE AWARD SHOW, YOU ALL SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES. I TELL YOU WHAT, YOU TRY PUTTIN ON A SHOW IN 72 HOURS OR LESS. THANK YOU JAMIE FOXX, BET, AND NE YO. I THOUGHT THAT WAS MICHAEL SINGING AT ONE TIME.

Poetic Said on

Am I the only one who KNOWS that BET should do another tribute to Michael Jackson? Mariah would have been perfect for the song, “I’ll Be There.” Where was Usher? I know some people don’t like Chris Brown, but hey. I have always loved Michael’s and the Jacksons music. I gave him his respect before he died. I have never stopped loving his music, singing, or dancing. His videos were like WOW! He was a genius, exceptionally gifted. Hours before he died, my friend and I were talking about Michael Jackson being the best entertainer and singer of all time. We were both encouraged that he wanted to tour again. You just never know. Nobody could touch him and have the impact he had on generations of singers, fans, countries and different races. I honestly think Michael Jackson deserves to honored again with only his music. BET, here’s your chance. Let the other stations focus on the negativity. Encore!!

My friend recommended me an awesome place *** === http://www.AgelessFriends.com === *** a nice and free club for Younger Women and Older Men, or Older Women and Younger Men, to interact with each other. It’s fabulous!

Syndi Said on

WHO THE HELL THOUGHT THIS WAS A TRIBUTE!!!!!! FIRE THAT WOMAN WHO PRAISED EVERYONE!!!!!! IS SHE STUPID OR WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER OFF PLAYING 4 HOURS OF COMMERCIAL FREE JACKSON VIDEO’S WITH NO REPEATS. HONOR MICHAEL, THE JACKSON FIVE AND JANET. WHAT WERE YOU THINKING LETTING THAT BUM JOE JACKSON GET ON STAGE OR EVEN SPEAK IN HONOR OF MICHAEL. THE “ONLY” HONORING MOMENT WAS WHEN JANET CAME IN AND SPOKE. I AM SURE SHE IS DEVASTATED BUT WITH THE GRACE OF AN ANGEL SHE APPEARED AND HONORED HER BROTHER. THANK YOU JANET FOR YOUR TIME AT THIS MOMENT OUR HEART’S GO OUT TO YOU. BET YOU HAVE DISHONORED YOURSELF. ALSO CHRIS BROWN IS A BETTER PERFORMER THAN ANYONE THAT WAS ON STAGE WITH EXCEPTION TO BBD AND BEYONCE BUT SHE SHOULD HAVE SANG ……I’LL BE THERE… AND PUT ON SOMETHING MORE SUITABLE FOR A MEMORIAL SHOW. JAMIE FOXX I LOVE YOU MAN AND THE MOONWALK WAS COOL BUT….. YOU SORTA ACTED LIKE JOE JACKSON SELF SERVING!!!!! SORRY MAN BUT THIS WAS NOT YOUR BEST MOMENT AND CERTAINLY NOT THE TIME TO PROMOTE YOURSELF I KNOW YOU GOTTA EAT BUT MAN I THOUGHT YOU WERE CLASSIER THAN THAT!!!!!!!!!! MICHAEL HAD CLASS AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN HONORED WITH CLASS, LOVE, BEAUTY…….. TRY AGAIN BUT BE CLASSY AND RESPECTFUL OF MICHAEL AND HIS FANS CAUSE MICHAEL IS……. “THE KING OF POP”……….. THANKS TO THE GOOD WORDS AND CLASS OF THE O’JAY’S IF YOU CAN’T BE CLASSY THEN PLEASE TAKE LESSONS FROM SMOKEY ROBINSON, LIONEL RICHIE RAY CHARLES, EVEN LITTLE RICHARD AND BY ALL MEANS OLD MOTOWNER’S JAY’Z IS NOT CLASS PROMOTING ONE’S SELF IS NOT CLASS AND HAVING JOE JACKSON AND HIS ILK ARE DEFINITELY NOT CLASS HE’S A LAZY BUM

I came to this site specifically to add my voice to those who were utterly disappointed. Everyone I talked to agrees that BET did a horrible job. Jamie Foxx self-promotion out of place! He ad-libbed the entire show…wasn’t there a comment made about the writers working through the night to make changes? Jamie evidently didn’t care…just like he said at the end when he threw the script at the poor intern…”I don’t need no script”. Uh Boo…yes ya did…you needed someone to reign your butt in and to direct you. Jamie was horrible. Did he not realize that this was live TV? What was the deal with making a stage hand come up and bring him the ?##? There was a perfectly good microphone he was speaking into…tacky. “Uh are we ready? Uh oh were not?”…he didn’t have any finesse to be able to think on his feet when things went wrong. BET please do not EVER do another live show. Do you not realize these performers have no respect for the potential audience? They say and do whatever they want and the person working the “bleep” button could not keep up. I love Beyonce, great voice, etc. Her performance was not what the occasion needed. Neyo did a great job. He actually saved Jamie’s butt on the duet. We were expecting so much more. I have never put on a production such as this so I can’t definitely say that with the time constraints the show could have been better. So I think that maybe it shouldn’t have been “revamped” if it couldn’t have been done well. Maybe just a tribute segment should have been added. But instead it was billed to be an entire show dedicated to MJ….Boo BET…I was already fading as a viewer….I am definitely out now.

I think the BET awards was garbage this year. I was really looking forward to the awards after I found out it was revamped to pay tribute to Michael Jackson. Debra Lee said it was put together in 3 to 4 days well believe me when I say you can definitely tell. I was highly disappointed and normally the opening act is ususally one that you can feel good or decent about and I think Jamie Fox did a horrible job. There was too much cursing for this to be a “family friendly” show. As much as BET airs the awards after it is shown the first time, well they don’t need to air this one again. This was a disappointment to black people and to Michael Jackson if this was supposed to pay tribute to the “KING OF POP”.

Just have one word THIS SHOW WAS HORRIBLE!!!!!! BET you should be Ashamed to put this type of mess on live TV. i will not watch any more of this
type of foolishness. FOR CRYING OUT LOUD THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE
A TRIBUTE TO MICHEAL JACKSON! I am definitely not going to watch BET i am tired of watching Garbage……..

I hardly ever watch the BET awards, but I made it a must when I heard that it was going to be a tribute to Michael Jackson. Horribly done…Jamie Foxx was funny at times and his performance was one of the best, including the Ojays, the Ojays tribute, and the Old Skool groups. WTH was Keri Hilson doing, she looked stupid. Ving Rhames and the Baby Boy skit, was ridiculous. Beyonce…can you be normal for once. Maxwell was good, but if his act wasn’t the last, why the hell all the feathers falling from the sky. LiL Wayne…No Respect at all…Show some class. This was the classless awards show I’d ever seen. They could have done We Are The World at the end. Alicia Keys was the classiest person that stepped on the stage. Where was Chris Brown. BET is supposed to support all performers. Chris Brown should have been there, who cares if Jay Z would have backed out… If you notice, everyone that took in attendance wasn’t all that great. It was a bunch of new comers trying to shine and make there debut.. I hope and pray, if I live to see it…When Prince passes…don’t $~?~~ it up!!!!!
RIP Mike…love ya!
