Rihanna Fumbles at ‘Woman of the Year’
Published by Dior Noir on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 3:00 pm.
After months of only seeing her in paparazzi photos, Rihanna is officially back on the scene! Yesterday she sat down with MTV’s Alexa Chung, for her second interview since THE incident. She didn’t speak on the assault, although she did mention a song off of her new album called “Stupid in Love.” Last night the singer was amongst several honorees at Glamour magazine’s Women of the Year Awards in New York. The songbird was recognized as “The Back-On-Top Superstar.”
Model Iman presented the award and said “She has taken her own scars and used them to create a new story of strength and awareness.” Iman also noted that Rihanna would serve as a role model to victims of domestic violence.
Now, a source who was in the house at the awards told me it was embarrassing and “painful to watch” Rihanna get through her acceptance speech which she read completely from a crumpled piece of paper that she pulled out from her sweeping Stephane Rolland dress. The singer started off dabbing her eyes while announcing she was “PMSing” and then proceeded to tell the audience, which included notables like Maya Angelou (who received a “Lifetime Achievement” honor) and Bill Clinton,”I didn’t even know I had to speak, I didn’t know what kind of event it was, I didn’t know anything until a few hours ago.” Ummm? Did she forget that she was one of the cover girls for Glamour’s Women of the Year issues? Why didn’t her publicist give her the heads up before she took the stage? Yikes! We’ll give Rih-Rih a pass, though. I’m sure her people spent most of their energy prepping for that big 20/20 interview last week.
Rihanna thanked various people from her professional team as well as her mother and grandmother for making her the woman she is today. She graciously accepted the award saying “It was a real honor to be named Glamour’s Woman of the Year, especially because I think of myself as just becoming a woman. I just turned 21 this year. Just to be mentioned in this group of women is overwhelming.”
Are you glad Rhianna’s making a comeback? Do you think she deserved a “Woman of the Year” award?

@ Ladybug, what you are saying is so true. I said the same exact thing that she wasn’t being totally honest in her interview. If anyone gets on Twitter at all the dancers from Chris’s camp were going off saying that she needs to come out and tell the whole truth and that she was crazy. I feel if your going to tell the story, please tell the whole story and not be ashamed or “embarrassed” to let the world know that you are abusive as well. They both need couseling because they are both products of there environment . . . abusive fathers in the homes when they were growing up. I saw a police report that was circulating on the net (I don’t know if it is original or not) but it said that she punched him in the face 2 or 3 times while he was driving and Chris lost his cool. Now tell me that they both don’t need counseling. YES, they do.
Yes Augusta i have been in an abusive relationship to answer your ignorant statement. And I do way more than Rihanna for women in my situation daily. How about you? And I can see through the little girl because she is not being honest. Most any of us that has been through it can see through her. Especially since she takes it off everywhere. My opinion and your answer lets me know who is the mature one here.
i like rihanna but i don’t think she deserved that award afte she did that interview. it’s clear that this is for publicity, bcux her ablum comes out in 2 weeks. so she wants people to have sympathy for her. chris did his interview in september or october no where near the release date of his album. but she is. i think beyonce should hve gotten that award, bcuz she has the best ablum of the decade, best songs, and more success than rihanna.
LADYBUG and bryon,
I am a professional woman close to 30 and I have dated a few gentleman in my day. Your comments about whether Rihanna is telling the whole truth are irrelevant. Regardless of what a woman does, no man with character would ever, EVER, respond with physical violence. Much less beat a woman to a pulp. No one can make you be that person. Just like no one can make you be a $*#*#~ or a murderer, no matter how much they “provoke” you. That’s all on YOU.
And if another person ever does bring you to the point of even thinking about violence, that’s the time you WALK AWAY. No excuses.
Regarding Rihanna’s decision to pose without a top or in less clothing than you would like, take a tour through any art gallery, magazine or ancient city. Nudity, both male (check out scultures and paintings of David nude) and female has been celebrated as beautiful and artistic. While you may disagree, her images to date have been just that. Frankly, having intimate photos of me released by someone I trusted would have inspired me to take back control of my bodyimage and present myself in the way that I see fit.
Finally, of course she addressed the incident when her album was coming out. Aside from her LEGALLY not having been able to discuss it until quite recently, the launch of a new album is the perfect time to address the elephant in the room. It was a brave thing to do, because it exposed her to the judgment of many ignorant individuals and involved disclosure of something very painful that most of us get to keep to ourselves, without having photos of our battered faces flooding the internet or helicopters hovering above our homes.
You can still like Chris Brown’s music. That doesn’t mean you have deny the horrendous nature of what he did.
I have read all the comments posted above and the bottom line is this… Truth is the one thing that cannot be altered. & one way or another it will come out. No, none of us were there in the car that night to see what happened however we do have some insight on both parties involved. Chris’s quick temper, and Rhiana’s Diva like persona, and both having controlling, abusive parents in the home. Which leads me to believe that there was some provoking going on from both parties and in the end Chris finished it off. To Agusta, You shouldnt call people to stupid to be human, because unless you are God, you too say things that dont always make sense to others which makes u appear ignorant and uneducated. So be careful what you say about others. & to everyone else who gave a solid opinion on here keep in mind that its just an opinion and nothing more. Same as us both Chris and Rhiana need prayer and guidence, they made a huge mistake and I hope they learn from it. Do I think she deserved the award? No… after she matures and learns more, the award may better suit her. God bless.
I really don’t think she deserve this award. What has done this year beside get in a violent situation. She so concern about her career but destorying Chris because she not telling the whole truth. She stated that she keep pressing Chris and wouldnt let it go and everyone has their breaking point. And she brought him to that breaking point. I am not saying she deserve to be hit but come on be real.
HAHAHAHA!!! Look at you guys (ladies???). Tearing each others heads off for having differing views. Must be a room full of 12 year-olds… That or a room full of jealous twits!
I’m so happy Ri Ri is back on the scene. I also love the new do. For all of those Rihanna haters. Ya’ll was probably her fan b 4 and now ya’ll playin her out b cuz of what happen to her and Chris Breezy, move on and stop sleepin on my girl.

Rhianna do not deserve to have this title. Sorry.
Thanks everyone here for opening my eyes. I now understand that when a man beats the crap out of a woman and nearly kills her, it’s because she did something to deserve it. I’m glad to see we’re going back to the good old days of the 19th century when it was legal for men to beat their wives when they got out of line. Maybe we can also bring back some other fine traditions like only lettting white males vote, driving Native Americans off their land and forcing five year olds to work in mines. Progress sucks, let’s all regress!
Leave her alone!!! Nobody knows what REALLY happened that night but the two of them n GOD!! She has alot of talent..PEOPLE NEED TO QUIT HATIN’! PSSH..
and this is only part her work
of the past three years!
We need to squash the hater
mentality out there and do more volunteer work!
When was the last time any other stars
did anything to help orphans and ill children,
below much of the publics radar ?

i like rihanna but that award should have went to someone like beyonce or someone of that sort but never the less congrats
The award was for “Back on Top Superstar” meaning someone that went through something but made a comeback.. so that is what she got it. And who cares if someone thinks she deserves it? She got it..sooo?
I am not surprised by this post or the comments. This is BET.com after all.. who ALWAYS put black folks in a positive light. LOL!
Beyonce received so many awards and it is a good thing. Let’s be equally fair and give someone young and up and coming a chance. Everything can be about one person all the time. We have to let everyone shine, and encourage them to be better. As humans on this earth for a short time we must learn to love each other, congratulate each other and lift each other up. We cannot for our own selfish reasons keep pushing each down. Lift your brother up and lift your sister up when they do need a helping hand. To some of you Rhianna might be your favorite and to others Beyonce might be. Regardless of our feelings does that give us the right to get negative and put one against the other and say ill things about either of them. Let’s spread the message of love and light and togetherness instead of hate darkness and selfishness. Keep up the good work Rhianna and may your light shine so another person can shine someday too.
no one is going to be happy for my home gurl. but u know what!!! Barbados to the world!!!
Ri Ri love her HaterZ
Everyone has their take on what happened between Rihanna and Chris but they are the only ones who know what really happened.
Abuse has been going on forever. It isn’t fair that he has to be ridiculed and scrutinized for what has happened. He wasn’t in this alone. I do think that Rihanna deserves this award for what she has done and what she has accomplished. People need to leave the both of them alone and let them straighten up thier issues and move on no matter how long it takes.
I think she did hot deserve that award because she has succeeded in turning a majority of chris fans against him. I think she provoked him and she know she did. I still think that chris brown is a very talented young man and should not be dissed like that. I still love him and hope all yu narrow minded people will wake up and see the truth. rihana is no damn angel so stop trying to make her out to be.
I hope this helps others in a similar situation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3ujgzwEuIg
