American Music Awards: Whitney, J. Lo, Lady Gaga and More

The 2009 American Music Awards went down last night at Nokia Theatre in LA and while they’re usually a tame show compared to other music awards because they focus more on performances, last night brought plenty of moments to buzz about.
Of course the night couldn’t go on without Michael Jackson being recognized. Jermaine Jackson accepted four awards on Michael’s behalf. The only time Jermaine didn’t bask in the spotlights on stage was for the Artist of the Year Award, which MJ lost to Taylor Swift (ok where was Kanye during this award? Hopefully somewhere shamed that he put Swift on the radar enough to win an award over the King of Pop). Swift was the big winner of the night winning five awards (including AMA Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist over Beyonce and Lady Gaga, get out of here!). Luckily there was no chaos during the country singer’s acceptance speeches because she wasn’t there.
While there was little drama during the evening there were plenty of high energy performances from some of our favorite artists. Janet Jackson kicked off the evening performing a medley of songs including “Miss You Much.” Rihanna (who was dressed in a bondage outfit that looked like Lady Gaga’s long johns and was still tamer than Gaga’s performance outfit) preformed two songs off of her new album “Rated R.” Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z (who won Favorite Male Hip-Hop Artist) and Alicia Keys (who must want to get popped by Mashonda for the song “Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart”) all executed solid performances of their latest chart-toppers.
Jennifer Lopez’s performance of her new song “Louboutins” wasn’t so smooth. The singer is nursing a bruise today after falling on her butt when she tried to jump off a human pyramid of half-naked performers. “You miss me?” she asked near the end of the performance. You answer that question.
Whitney Houston took home the AMA International Artist of the Year Award, an honorary award given to to an artist for longevity and international success. The Diva also took to the stage to perform a new hit “Didn’t Know My Own Strength” in a moving performance that brought some of the audience members that were panned, like Reba McEntire to tears. If you blinked you might’ve missed Ray J sitting behind Whitney’s daughter Bobbi Christina. Hmmm, are Ray J and Whitney still special “friends” like the old rumors say? One can only wonder.
All in all it was a well executed show with the usual suspects in the music industry.

Horrible Horrible show. It seemed unfair to the black & rock community. It was all about country and I had thought that country had their own award show being the cma’s which just aired last week. And to add insult to the black community Taylor Swift was in a category with a legend and then won over the legend, this being Michael Jackson, THE KING. Taylor is ok if your counrty, white, and a tween but for adults who I asumed ran the AMA’s this was a disgrace, an insult to music and Mr. Jackson himself! It’s not Taylors fault but let me say this Taylor Swift, in the REAL world, not the delusional one the AMA’S put forth you would never have been allowed to be in a category anywhere near the KING. You cannot match his music nor will you ever come close. This was the time Kanye should have appeared along wwith many others to protest and he and they would have been correct!.
What do they consider when they pick the Artist of the Year? I’m just curious because how does someone who people bearly even know beat out the King of Pop? I mean can someone help me understand this one? I’m not taking anything from Taylor because I’m sure she’s a good artist but good enough to beat out the King of Pop? The man is a musical genius!!
I’m a fair-minded person. I thought Kanye was rude to Taylor at the VMA’s but I still don’t know what Taylor Swift does. Maybe I’m getting old but I don’t know any of her songs. I like country, keith Urban, Jewel, Faith Hill, Toby Keith are all good artists but I don’t know what Taylor Swift really does.
Anyways, best performance goes to Jay-z and Alicia Keys for actually entertaining.

Adam Lambert gave a nauseous, off-key babble of a performance.
Whitney would never be the same princess she used to be…it was an ‘ok’ performance and the audience applauded out of respect for what she used to be.
COME ON NOW WE ALLKNOW THAT THE AMA HAVE NEVER BEEN THE AWARDS SHOW THAT PAID ATTENTION TO THE INDIVIDUALS THAT DIDN’T SONG COUNTRY( IE: TAYLOR SWIFT) OR ROCK BANKS (IE: (ADAM LAMBERT) IF U DON’T ENJOY THIS MUSIC ANY OTHER TIME IT’S NOT EVEN WORTH WASTING PRECIOUS SECONDS OU OF LIFE TO WATCH JUST WAIT AT HOME FOR THE BET AWARDS, OR THE SOUL TRAIN AWARDS WHICH WILL AIR ON CENTRIC (FORNALLY BETJ) ON NOVENBER 29
For those complaining about how the winners were picked- its based on the music buyers, NOT on the peole IN the entertainment business, so if you don’t like who won- buy more music of those you do and vote for them. Simple.
Watching the AMA, I felt as if I could be watching TV on Mars or in some other alien atmosphere. I have never liked rap music and never will. But rap music aside, what was that other noise I heard? What happened to songs that had melodies? Or lyrics that could be understood? With a mike stuck down the throat, how can anyone sing? And why on earth did this Lady GaGa smash the mike stand into the glass cage that encased her piano? And what was she wearing? And why did fires have to break out in every number? I’m not too old to remember talent. Where was it? What have we come to? I am horrified. Embarrassed. We gave awards–for what? Pyrotechnics? Perhaps all that background nonsense and the ridulous costumes and choreography was to divert us from realizing that this was not a show about music. I don’t know what it was about.
The winners are chosen from record sales. I’m wondering what album Michael was nominated for…other than this is it he hadn’t released a song in years.
And it would be silly to protest Taylor winning again it was stupid enough the first time.
THE BEST PERFORMANCE WAS LADY GAGA EVEN THOUGH I’M NOT A FAN AT LEAST SHE CAN SING AND DANCE AND PLAY THE PIANO THE WORST WAS RIHANNA SHE JUST PROVED HOW OVERATED SHE IS SHE CANT DO SHITTT, JLO NEEDS TO RETIRE, ALICIA KEYS CAN MOVE HER WAIST A LITTLE, WITNEYS PERFORMANCE GOT MY ATTENTION, THAT GAY PRICKK LAMBERTTS DISGUSTED ME AND THE BLACK EYE PEAS WAS GOOD…. I WONDER WHY ALL THESE HIPOCRITES WANT TO GIVE MICHEAL AWARDS AFTER HIS DEATH, ITS BEEN YEARS SINCE HIS LAST ALBUM AND IF HE WAS ALIVE HE WOULD’NT EVEN GET NORMINATED CAUSE THOSE HIT SONGS WHERE IN HIS PAST YEARS BUT HE IS STILL A LEGEND

this show was a waste of my time and rihanna was the worst she needs to get over herself
i believe the awards is not the same anymore a mean, look at rihanna she was so out of character, janet that outfit did nothing for her i was so disappointed with her outfit and performance. no disrespect to mj but why give him awards when he as not released an album in so many years. jay-z and alicia was good. i enjoyed mary jay, and whitney am proud to see her looking so nice.listen we need more of a real entertaining show too much unnecessary out rageous act like lady gaga breaking and smashing things.the awards use to be so gracious to watch now its scary and outrageous.

It is a bit amusing to see people rant about their opinions of Lady Gagas performances (e.g. stunned “I’m not too old to remember talent. Where was it?”) I assume people have forgotten other peformance artists who merged music and art in similar fasions. M.Manson, Madonna, Alice Cooper, Liberache, David Bowie, Sun Ra…even Mozart was known for his varried eccentricites. And that really is to only name a very select few. So really, how old do you have to be I wonder to remember a period when people were not entwining art and music in ways that shocked, surprised, inspired, and pushed the limits?
My thoughts on the show….I’m mad they didn’t have Faigth perform. just helped present. Rhianna is a beautiful girl, but I couldn’t understand her song. th elights onher outfit were really neat. Jennifer nettles can sing and sing and Sing. she draws me in. What has happened to Sara Evans, Sheryl Crowe? Alan Jackson’s songwriting? I’m al for young artists, but there’s no way Taylor swift should win so much at once. Miranda got so overlooked. Poor lady. and lady Gaga, give me a break. I don’t need to see vodka bottles get smashed. and look into camera at end like u hit insanity? what the #$## thankfully they had Alicia Keyes do something artful.
