Are Bajans OD-ing on Ri-Ri?

November 26th, 2007

You’d think folks in Barbados would still be proud of their native girl, Rihanna. But not everyone on the island is cheering her on. Consider this from the editorial section of Barbados’ NationNews.com:

“I AM TIRED of opening my newspaper to find Rihanna headlines; Rihanna this and Rihanna that. Give it a rest! People talking about her putting Barbados on the map is nonsense. Barbados was well on the map before she came along; and will be when she is gone.

I read a comment written in the DAILY NATION, November 20, about giving her a big welcome each time she comes home. I do not believe she gives her schedules to anyone here, anyway. She comes and goes when she pleases. All her achievements are hers and I have not seen her do anything spectacular. Where was her donation back in September for the Brittons Hill tragedy? I have nothing against the young woman. More power to her. But when sensible Barbadians write what to my mind is rubbish in the paper, I feel the need to comment.”  — Sonia Armstrong

Somebody needs to cut back on the Haterade.

Everyone has a comment and an opinion, but sometimes I feel people are better just keeping their comments to themselves. I don’t really think it was necessary here. Really, Rhianna is a star and you are going to read about her one way or the other. It’s funny that this person said they are tired of reading about Rhianna, but they just gave us another reason to read about her. I’m pretty sure she did not put Barbados on the map, but realistically was anyone thinking about Barbados before Rhianna? If so, great, but I can’t recall. Rhianna is young and talented so instead of getting upset because she is dominating the newspaper try encouraging her to continue what she’s doing and to continue to grow as an artist. If she was doing some “Lindsey Lohan” mess I would totally understand, because I personally get tired of reading about Brit Spears, Lindsey Lohan etc, because it is nothing, but Drama, but I don’t hear much Drama coming from Rhianna so I don’t see the problem right now. They just sound like someone who is bitter towards Rhianna.

Why is every one hating this girl and whats so bad her own people. This girl did put Barbados’ on the map. I did not know anything about their culture but now I do and the only reason I know is because of Rihanna. They just mad because they where not the ones that put it on the map like she did. Quit hating give the girl her props.

Im from Barbados and first I just want to say that most Bajans are indeed happy for Rihanna’s success. Her success is her own but that doesnt mean that she is perfect. Lately all we’ve been hearing her say is how Bajans are ‘catty’. I dont even know what that means. U should see how people gather to watch her whenever she is here, so don’t accuse us of being haters. The simple reality is that while more people know about Barbados because of Rihanna, there are things here that we in this island should be even more proud of than Rihanna but just like any country, not enough emphasis is placed on that. We would prefer to see our media inform us about relevant issues, Rihanna being at her cousin’s wedding does not need to be shown in colour for us to see. I guess since we only have one global star we should get more giddy-headed like all the Paris Hilton (who is ugly btw and has no common sense) foolishness that gets filtered through to us on a daily basis but we aren’t that far gone

Actually,Barbados has a lot to offer. I certainly know plenty about the Island, but I’m not American born. I think that explains some things to the poster above who mentioned they didn’t know anything about the place before Rhianna came around. I’m not sure what she’s teaching you,but I haven’t heard anything new from her regarding her place of birth. I wouldn’t expect an American(especially black)to know or try to find out anyting outside their small little world/block. Anyway, she’s just a celebrity trying to make her money wherever she can like anyone else.

How dare you make that statement (I wouldn’t expect an American(especially black)to know or try to find out anyting outside their small little world/block). I think you are misinformed about black people in America. Don’t believe everything you hear or see in the media about black folks. Do you your homework before you generalize an entire race. We have many and I say many smart, articulate, educated, and decent Black Americans in the USA. I should know because I am one of them. Furthermore, their are many dimensions to the Black American, unfortunately you like so many other foreigners and the media, Hollywood, etc. have a misconception about blacks in America. They like you think we are all thugs, criminal minded people, good for nothing folks.

PS: If it wasn’t for Black Folks, America wouldn’t be where it is today you IGNORANT FOOL!

“I think you are misinformed about black people in America. Don’t believe everything you hear or see in the media about black folks.”

I admit that was a very broad generalization. However, I am speaking from experience. Perhaps it is just coincidence, but it is my experience none the less.

“Furthermore, their are many dimensions to the Black American, unfortunately you like so many other foreigners and the media, Hollywood, etc. have a misconception about blacks in America. They like you think we are all thugs, criminal minded people, good for nothing folks.”

Now you are generalizing. I am just speaking on the fact that many AA that I’ve meet/associated with tend to be ignorant about other blacks not from America. They know little about other cultures (not only blacks) around the world and they tend to have this “better than” attitude to boot. I DON NOT think all blacks in America are thugs etc. I happen to know, again from experience that there are many successful, educated blacks in America. Thanks for listening. I’m going to ignore your last comment. I understand you got heated and I won’t take the name calling personal. Have a nice day!

This will certainly bring her more media attention! I don’t think she put Barbados on the map, she just grabbed attention back to it, like any other native. The media is powerful and they can certainly twist the facts and embellish to sell stories.

I thought that you were not concerned about name callling. And if you were intelligent than you would have exspress yourself better than saying that black people here in the US really do not know anything about other blacks from different countries. I am of mixed race and I pride myself on knowing about our race from every country I do not stereotype the african race. And as you can see I am very intelligent.

It is a basic trend in the Caribbean to criticize one’s own. the jamaicans criticized Sean Paul and Shaggy because they did not think him ghetto-enough. They did not even like Bob Marley at the beginning. It is only when the white people started to recognize the thing (i refer to the talent, the music) that everybody decided to jump in on the bandwagon and started feeling proud of them. The interesting thing about Rihanna is that she got criticized after she became famous. The fact is that she did not have to face the condescending caribbean public first before she blew up in the States. Just consider this: this Trini cricket star, Brian Lara, is always criticized (negatively) regionally but when he goes to England, they give him a standing ovation. I rest my point.

bajanplum (Las Vegas) said on December 6th, 2007

Yes, we Bajans can be very out spoken but clearly Sonia Armstrong has no clue about publicity, marketing, public relations, or finances outside of her meager weekly or monthly pay check. For an artist at the status that Rihanna is at right now, when she comes home she wants to be Rihanna the person not Rihanna the singer. That is why you don’t know her schedule, she does not always want the fan flare she just wants to breath and come back down to earth sometimes. And to the Nation news paper, I understand freedom of press but what about protecting your own. When Roberta Flack comes to B’dos she is able to do her thing and nobody puts her stuff in the paper. You would not see this shtt from Jamaicans. She does not just represent Barbados, she represents us the Caribbean as a whole, so I suggest you take some aspirin because you will be seeing and reading a whole lot more about her. And as far as monetary contributions the girl is not “Oprah”. Every time she sends money home to her family and it is taxes, or send packages home for her family, that is taxed, her bank accounts at home are taxed. All these help fix the roads in B’dos and help you not to pay full price for your medication when you go to the hospital, helps the Government pay back the money they owe other countries. Yes not a perfect system but you are benefiting from her money too. She is doing her part she represents us well hardly any negative press. How many Caribbean people you know make the best dress list in American magazines almost none. You may think that is unimportant, but it is all of that, that helps pay her that helps pay the taxes that help support you Sonia Armstrong. They will be haters and they will be lovers of the game so just take it with a gain of salt. Only worry when they stop talking about you.

Can anyone say jealousy? I sense some strong haterism, from ya girl! Although Rihanna seems a bit snobbish at times, she’s still the *hit. Us women are all like that at times, it’s in our nature. As far as Barbados goes, honestly I’ve never heard of any other entertainers from there, not to say there has’nt been, I’ve never heard of any. But Rihanna puts it down, and some advice for those that don’t like her, don’t listen!
