Cosby Airs “Laundry” On Oprah

October 16th, 2007

“America’s Favorite Dad” is Oprah’s guest on today’s show (Oct. 17), and you know what that means. Be prepared to hear about what’s wrong in the Black community, and in front of all of Oprah’s millions of white fans. The daytime diva will be chatting with the legendary comedian about his new book, “Come On, People,” and about the controversial remarks he made at the 2004 NAACP convention. Remember how pissed he was?

Just one of many quotables: “Those people are not Africans, they don’t know a damned thing about Africa. With names like Shaniqua, Shaliqua, Mohammed and all that crap and all of them are in jail.”

“The only thing I regretted was I thought that I was talking to just my people,” Bill Cosby said, reflecting on the comments he made. “I said, okay, I’m gonna talk to my people and I guess there were some black people who saw some white people sitting around and then they decided that I was dragging out dirty laundry.”

Y’all know he’s a little right.

Cosby can’t embarass blacks no more than the hoochie mamas and thugs that are on tv. Cosby will just say what the white folks have been wanting to say and that most regular blacks want to say.

I agree with Cosby for the most part. So what that’s what’s in your community and what you grew up around. Change it. So if you are from a poor town and you were broke, ok, you’re not now, so pull your pants up, clean your face and your mouth and look the part of where you want to go. Don’t look like where you’re from but where you want to go. I am from the ghetto, however my mother taught me better than that. My co-workers would think I was from the UPper class town they live in (I work in a law firm with white people). They don’t look at me and say just another black from the hood. We have to be different. WE embarass ourselves when we make excuses for our behavior and think it’s going to be ok for us to continue trashing ourselves. Your videos with the guns and the money and the bling and the girls that’s what white america sees and that’s what is being portrayed about us. So if you don’t like it change it. Cosby is only stating his opinion for which many many people agree with him on.

Thanks What, you covered everything I wanted to say.

I don’t think Bill’s comments are
racist/embarrassing, he’s only speaking the truth and we all know it, the truth hurts. Keep preaching Bill!!!! Hopefully one day soon most of us will learn a thing or two from your messages.

It’s time for a wake call that has been long overdue.

There is no need sitting around and keeping a lid on this pot. We too quickly want to point the finger at other races, but we have some cleaning up to do.

Jennifer said on October 16th, 2007

Love him to death for preaching the truth. I did a term paper on his speech and what others (Michael Eric Dyson and Juan Williams) had to say on it. He is the truth!!!

Cosby is on the money. Dr. Phil who was given a show by Oprah always says “you can’t change what you don’t acknowledge” and that is true. The longer we keep blaming everyone but ourselves for the problems in our community, the longer the problems will exist. Open up and listen to Cosby.

I THINK COSBY IS A BRILLANT, INTELLIGENT MAN AND WHAT HE SAYS MAKES PLENTY OF SENSE, EVERYONE SHOULD OPEN UP AND LISTEN TO COSBY FOR REAL

Bill is telling the truth, he is speaking for half of the black people that feel the same way!! I’m glad somebody finally said it outloud. I’ve always felt that way about those ghetto names and the ghetto mentality, that is what he’s describing that has overtaken our race. We keep talking about slavery and Africa but don’t even know what we’re talking about because we choose not to read our history for ourselves. Even black history events are dwendling. Our black history celebration should be about the food fromthe differnt tribes in Africa, dances, storytelling, parades, a real celebration and acknowledgement. The Latin community celebrates their culture. Bill have me rolling in the floor about how some of us act. Go head Bill!!!!

I wonder how many blacks would be praising Bill Cosby’s comments if they knew he was talking about them. It’s easy to say, “That’s right Bill”, when you know he’s not talking about you and you don’t have to feel the sting of his comments.

And Mr. Cosby is restating facts that black folk already know. But what is his plan of action to change the situation? Does he have some chapters in his book dedicated to laying out a well-thought out strategy to help the black community turn it around? Whether he wants to believe it or not, a lot of those black folk he’s talking to and about have been in the dark so long, they don’t know how to get out.

It’s one thing to tell someone they are in the dark, Mr. Cosby. It’s another thing to tell them and show them how to get out!!!

What Bill is saying is oh so true but, I hope he will consider Oprah audience which is 90% white women. This is no concern of theres. Bill would not want someone talking about his mother if they were not family members. Oprah’s audience is not the crowd for beating up Black America.

I think Mr Cosby is a very good stand up for what is right man.Ilike how he speaks.

saywhaaa said on October 16th, 2007

I agree w/ Nicole. What Cosby said was just flat-out racist or (intraracist) or whatever. For a black guy who grew up in the projects, he certainly knows how to beat up on poor blacks. Ain’t that a %%?*$. Like somone else said,… instead of bitching about the problems, why doesn’t he help change them??? Oh, and Connie…
if he is so right about what he said, why are you so concerned about him saying in front of Oprah’s white audience??? If he’s so “right on the money” where and to whom he says it shouldn’t matter, right. You & I both know that what he said was racist against his own ppl. If he’s really concerend about the plight of black America, he should address it w/ some decency instead of degrading ppl. If that were Bill O’ Reilly, or Rush Limbaugh or anyone of those white idiots, black folks would be up in arms over that.

Like many in here, I admire what Bill Cosby is saying about us. I don’t think he will “embarrass” us but instead invite us to talk openly about many of our problems. I know, the “Oprah Winfrey Show” isn’t particularly the best forum to discuss or air our dirty laundry, but hey! at least it’ll show white people that a lot of us –blacks – do not support the image that is being portrayed on TV about us.
In fact, WE do it to ourselves. I’d like to reiterate what WHAT said: “Cosby can’t embarrass blacks no more than the hoochie mamas and thugs that are on tv.” That is sooo the truth! Unfortunately we stand out more with our crazy names, our “ghettoness” and how we can’t seem to properly speak English more than anything else! Record companies (with rappers) and TV networks with reality shows like “I love New York” & “Flavor of Love” are all profiting with that image of black people because it is not their race that is being exposed!
Black people, when are we ever going to realize that the joke is on us!!! Goshh …

Tamaka said on October 16th, 2007

Mr. Crosby is right about the issues that are facing around community, but we as a people need to do more than listen to what he is saying. We need to take his advice and put into action.

L Taylor said on October 16th, 2007

For once in your lives black people, take responsibility for your actions. Even the person who wrote this article about B. Cosby mentioned something about Oprahs “white fans”, well, it’s like this; forget about white fans for once, if you don’t want to be called to the mat in front of the world, stop doing what you do urban (black) america. We are truly our own worst enemies, even though it’s true that other races or cultures attempt to keep their thumbs on us, we help them along just fine. Our people only care about bling, money, keepin’ it real, buying the most expensive of anything put on the shelves, drinking only the top of the top shelf liquor (start with Wild Irish Rose and work your way up), how many girls you can bang (and you wonder why you have 6 kids by 5 women), who can pay your bills (ladies), putting rims on a piece of crap car, carrying your entire financial worth in your front pocket (showing off for one night at a bar) and dressing your child (as well as yourself) in the highest fashions yet you don’t even have funiture in your apartment (think home ownership). But the dumbest thing of all that these urban idiots do, is that “make it rain” mess, if you are dumb enough to throw hard earned money into the air (in attempts to show people that you’re paid), you deserve to be looked down upon by any race, not just whites. Blacks get $5.00 in their pockets and it’s a must that we spend $4.99 just to show other blacks that you can’t afford what I can, be-littling others (and you talk about how whites treat or look at us). Stop letting these stupid “hood” laws of the streets drive your motivation and take resposibility for you and your kids lives, teach your kids how to check a credit report, how to properly write a check, how to pay your monthly bills and put a couple dollars in the bank, how to speak proper english when necessary (yet still use slang with your friends), and for god sake, recognize the fact that if you wear the uniform of a street thug or a hoochie, you will be treated as such, so blame no one but yourselves the next time you want to use that lame gesture that someone has “disrespected” you. We disrespect us more than anyone else does, think about that.

Do any of you think that black Americans haven’t done anything right??? This just makes me sick. Other blacks talking about we need to stop doin’ this, we need to stop doin’ that. How about patting ourselves on the backs for what we do RIGHT! It’s bad enough the rest of the world highlights our faults, we need to stop encouraging them. Damn.

I love Bill Cosby. Am writing from Kenya and truth be told…White folks know more about Africa than Black folks.
Most Black folks just come to Africa to have a feel of the so called “Mother Land”. Honestly speaking what do you know about Africa apart from the fact that your ancestors came from Africa? Its a big shame.
What Bill is saying is the truth….There is nothing African about Black Americans apart from their skin color, i know i sound harsh but that is the truth.
Wish you knew the great chances you have but most of the time all we hear are excuses….poor excuses…Take time and learn about Africa…you can start with the names…we have great and simple African names like Imani (Faith), Uhuru (Freedom), Jabali (Tower, instead of the ghetto names…they sound funny.

Cosby is absolutely right. There’s a lot of black people that need to change their ways. Now don’t get be wrong, it’s tough being black, particularly a black male in this country, but that does not excuse the was some of us conduct ourselves.

And for those who say that Cosby “embarrasses” blacks by airing out dirty laundry in public, let me ask you this. Do you feel the same way when rappers shoot one another and that some are constantly in trouble with the law? Do they embarrass that black community?

Sharhonda said on October 17th, 2007

I wasn’t upset the first time Mr. Cosby made his comments about African Americans. I was one of those African American students that made C’s and B’s in high school when I knew I could do better. I wasn’t wearing the lastest sneakers, but I was rocking the lastest in purses, boots, and clothes. Now I’m in college and determined to become a successful black women who is now averaging a 3.3 G.P.A. I know we can do better as a people. Education is the key out of the mindset that somebody owe us something. We only owe ourselves. There are too many successful African Americans we can look up to and we should say to ourselves they did it, now I can do it too.

Have you ever asked yourself why Oprah’s audience is 90% white?…. And since 90% of the audience is white and love Oprah… have you ever asked yourselves why other black celebrities say white people hate black people or say white people are racist? While Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton pimp their black audiences and preach hate towards something that hardly exists anymore, Cosby is standing up and adressing the source of all black problems in America. It starts with the youth… they decide the future… and education is only strength in this world, not guns or women or money. Cosby is more of a prophet than anything.

I dont agree with drug dealers at all, thats not what I’m saying but teens born into a poor black family’s go through the struggle. Instead of putting the black community down why dont he pray for us not them but us because we are all included.

I agree with cosby whole heartedly. Its sad that we get upset when another race can point out what we do wrong but then when we have an outstanding person of our race to say it we still cant receive it. the ones that are so hot and bothered about what he’s saying is the ones he’s talking about. cosby has never been a man of disrespect. I feel if Martin Luther was here or malcom x they would be saying the same thing. for all that was fought for to be thrown away and taking for granted. We owe it to ourselves to do better and if not ourselves then the people who paved the way for us.

Maurice said on October 18th, 2007

For the most part, I agree with Heathcliff:)Anyone who is from the “hood” and has made it out understands that what he is saying is filled with truth. It all starts with family and education. A strong family and a solid educational background can take you anywhere you want to go. I grew up in two parent household and I definitely saw the effect it had on my life. While most of my friends fell victim to selling drugs my father kept me from that and stressed the importance of education and responsibility. It has paid off. But I am saddened when I see so many of my family members and friends doing so poorly because of bad decisions they have made, decisions based on instant gratification instead of patience and hard work. There are those who are saying that he is not offering a solution but he is. The solution lies with the individual. The individual must realize that education is your best bet to be successful. While it may not provide you with millions of dollars, it can provide a comfortable life for you and your family. We also have to change our values. Too many of us value material things and think that they will make them happy, it doesn’t. If something is not done soon, it will only get worse. Its a cycle. Every so often someone breaks the cycle but not enough to stop the downfall. Instead of getting angry at what Cos is saying, maybe people need personally reflect on what he is saying and take action.

C White said on October 19th, 2007

I agree with you 100% Maurice…it starts with a strong family and a solid educational background. Also, if I might add changing our VALUE system– if we were to start valuing ourselves over materialistic items we would then not be so interested in instant gratification. We as a people have dropped the ball in so many areas - our faith, relationships, esteem etc…the list goes on and on…Bill Cosby has every right to make the statements that he makes…Let’s just bottom line it IS IT TRUE???..We all know that it is than we should work towards doing something positive about it.

mt said on October 19th, 2007

anyone can point out problems. what’s the solutions?

M Jones said on October 19th, 2007

I agree with some of what Cosby has stated.

However,…

the old addage “until you’ve walked a mile in my shoes don’t judge me” comes to mind. If I don’t live in the ghetto or deal with people in the ghetto then what right do I have to tell people from the ghetto how they should live or make decisions. Sorry, Mr. Cosby, but it’s easy to sit in your mansion and have no money issues and tell others how they should be living. When you can’t relate to people you have no right to judge them. Yes, Cosby is black, but this may be the only thing he really has in common with most of the blacks that he’s quick to criticize.

Cosby would be better off thinking of solutions to the problems that he’s addressed and putting forth an effort to implement them…otherwise he will continue to come off as a rich black man who’s embarrassed by his people instead of concerned about them.

Bryan said on October 19th, 2007

Bill preaches that accountability for your actions and a life that doesn’t require excuses will deliver you from the ghetto faster than Farrakhan or Snoop. A lot of people seem to want someone to give them a ticket out of the hood instead of earning it.

Nisha said on October 19th, 2007

I don’t think Cosby was always rich. I’m sure he had to struggle to be where he is today. Give him props because he managed to do this in a time when it was very hard for a Black Man to be successful. He marched and was 1st to do a lot of things Black Actors/Comedians take for granted.

He’s absolutely right.

I’m 10 times more embarrassed watching videos and Maury Povich than hearing what he has to say.

Regardless if you are poor and black, you can raise your children properly. There is no excuse for ignorance. Go to school, occasionally pick up a book and READ IT! Instead of being worried about what white folks and other ethnic groups are saying about us, we need to take care of our business. Over thirty Chicago Public School children have been killed this year because of guns and gang violence. The recent victim was a 10-year-old African American male child, shot down in the streets like a dog, caught in gang cross-fire in an African American neighborhood. Do the math and please stop excusing the stupid sh*t that goes on our community.

But let’s not over look the fact that it’s not just Black men, it’s all races of people that are failing the younger generations of today. So, though we are familiar with the whole “babies raising babies” drama, let’s shout out the men who “are” carrying their wait, and support them in their struggle, and at the same time, provide them with resources and support to encourage the others. I think its pathetic how he is waisting words on what we name our children….
He needs to use his words on how to solve and help resolve..
Who cares what we name them its how we raise them..

Anyone who reads my posts on the site knows that I am very critical of gangsta rap and kuntry ghetto rap music and everyone who supports it, but I have not and would not go on MTV.com or any other mainstream website or blog to voice my opinion because my message is for us. Just like when someone in my family does something crazy, I don’t go discuss it at work because that’s still my family, and when it’s all said and done, they are the only ones that I can really count on to have my back. That’s the problem when Bill chooses the forums that he chooses to discuss our issues. We can’t really tell if he still has our back, or if he’s turned his back on us. Why are so many people worried about how we are viewed by other races rather than how we are viewed by GOD. It is ridiculous to just stereo- type ourselves with just a name. My name is Tomeika and I am proud of my name. Are you saying that I should instead feel sorry that my name implies that I am black? I feel my actions and my persona should overcloud my name. That is the only disagreement that I have with Cosby.

Noone in this world is perfect, so how will we ever have a perfect race. I think it is a waste of time to just point out problems constantly without doing anything to exhibit change. Did anyone ever stop to think that this is a healing process for us? After being mistreated by America, did you ever think it would be easy to overcome what our race has been through. This is really a serious question that everyone needs to consider. Why are some of our people continuing to make the wrong choices time after time again? Why are some of us not accepting the call for higher education? Do not answer this in a way that it is embarrassing to our race (implying that we have to prove a point to other races), but more in a way that you want to help your brothers and sisters overcome these issues. Because doing so will ONLY mean that we are sorry that we have ghettos and hoods. According to America and Bush that will never change so what are we going to do next. Why do we have hoods and ghettos in the first place? Did it originate from blacks> Only the smart people can answer this question!

I mean I agree with some of what Bill Cosby says but really no one can help what thier named. Its the defintion of the name that matters. We as people make the defiition of our names. For example, one who keeps trying and never gives up e.t.c. And to what Tomeika has questioned ‘Do you ever think we could overcome what our race has been through.’ I believe that yes, we can. Tupac did, Diddy has, Maya Angelou has, Martin Luther King Jr. overcame it and preached the truth, even look at Barak Obama. And regardless of where he preaches his sermons of the black community at, as long as someone whom it is affecting hears it and decides to make a change for the better, thats all that matters.

Well, I agree with Bill with WHAT he said, but I feel Oprah had a hidden satisfying sense of “Since MOST black folks won’t accept me, I will have “America’s Dad”, Bill Cosby on the show for “THEM” to look @ my show”. I just don’t feel Oprah is a “good” as people THINK she is. There’s something about her that doesn’t sit well with me. It has nothing to do with her success or that fact that most of her audience is non-black. I don’t care about that. I’ve watched Oprah’s shows, I feel she believes the BAD stereotypes of even SUCCESSFUL LAW-ABIDING Hip Hop artists. Now…back to Bill….. I feel he should’ve delivered the message to a ROOM FULL of BLACKS….not a room full of WHITES, with a few Black folks in the corner of the room. He could’ve had some type of forum, seminar, “Come On People, Get It Together” Convention or SOMETHING. Instead of the Blacks, who feel they are NOT “THOSE PEOPLE” anymore, saying “LOOK WHAT YOU PEOPLE ARE DOING!”, do to the NEIGHBORHOODS of some of “THESE PEOPLE” who folks CLAIM are SOOOOOOO much of a problem. Don’t get me wrong, the problems are there, but go to the area of the problems & speak on SOLUTIONS & WAYS to get OUT of the problems.

@Leilani your very flawed logic is actually quite amusing. If you think for one second that the divine is Winfrey gives a damn about what a bunch of broke azz ignorant negroes think then you obviously fail to understand that she’s just doing her job as a talk show host. OPRAH is a talk show host. A VERY VERY VERY RICH one but nonetheless a TALK SHOW HOST. She’s not an elected offical; the savior; the queen; nor an ATM machine for Blacks wanting a hand out or the whipping girl for Blks who think she “owes” or has to prove something to the community. She is a 53 year old Black Woman from Mississippi who survived sexual abuse, neglect, poverty, teenage pregnancy, drugs, weight issues, crappy men. So of course she’s not gonna like music that degrades women. Its her show! She can have Bozo the clown on there 5 days a week if she wants to. She owns her own business. She can run it the way she wants to and have on there anybody she wants to. Hip Hop artist should be smacked across the face with a wet trout for moaning about a woman who is old enough to be their grandmother not wanting to promote or feature their sh@tty music. At the end of the day she’s
still just a talk show host. Take your beef elsewhere.

I have always been an admirer of Bill Cosby and I do believe in what he said about some of us is true. I thank God that most of us don’t think and behave in the manner in which he speaks of. The problem I have with this conversation is that why is it only blacks are being spoken to about their behaviors. I grew up in a predominately black neighborhood and seen just about everything imaginable. Now that I live in an all white community I have seen just about everything imaginable as well and some of it is not pretty. The only thing is white people live in communities where there is manicure lawns but have issues that you wouldn’t believe and have everything at there disposal to coverup the billshit. Bill Cosby is coming from a place where he is successful and can talk about why so many of our people are not making it. But he has not mention the fact we will always be playing catch up. Even if we do finally get it together as a whole.

Y’all know he’s a little right

“He’s a lil’ right,” give me a damn break. Mr. Cos was absolutely on point for pointing out the many things that are wrong within our people. I don’t underdand, had he been speaking highly of rappers and others who continuously make us to look likes fools and idiots, then he may have received a welcoming embrace, but because he spoke truth he’s looked as to be speaking bad about blk folks. Why shouldn’t our dirty laundry be exposed for what it is. Some of us do a lot of stupid things and attempt to justify it, so why then sanitize it. What’s wrong with him exposing the fact that some of kids are more interested a $150 pair of Jordan and take very little interest in school. Any why shouldn’t he talk of the other things that are wrong with us. Before any serious recovery or solving our problems we first must admit some of our actions are very much incorrect. I applaud Bill for taking his stance, more blk folks need to step up for truth and stop trying to satisfy everyone else. Being critical of our worngful actions are not down-grading or looking down on our people. If we realize some of the stupid things we do as a people, then perhaps we can think of a solution for ourselves and not looking for anyone esle to fixing it for us.

Andrea said on November 15th, 2007

Lift up? the good yes. the silly and ignorant and abusive, NO WAY. Mr. Cosby we thank you for your truthful comments. It’s more than just “names” people. What he’s trying to say is we pick these names such as Jaaquanothan and then can’t take the time to increase our vocabulary, or properly pronounce common English terms for example everywhere, we say erywhere, or pencil is perncil, these are just some examples that irk me. It’s time to wake up, we did not just step off the slave ship okay we’ve been free now since the 1800’s it’s time to start MASTERING our ENGLISH language.

gentleman said on November 19th, 2007

I agree with L Taylor, Bill Cosby is on point. Look at some of the foul ignorance, and bitterness comming from the above comments. We black people need to stop with the self pitty party, and stop looking for hand outs. Yea sometimes we all need a hand up in life, but if you don’t take the time to speak life to your own circumstances, and take authority over your own mind in order to change your life, a hand out, or just trying will never be good enough. Now we are focused on the fact that Bill Cosby is rich, and he forgot where he came from. The fact is, HE CAME FROM IT, AND OVERCAME IT. What would you rather he had done? Stayed in the ghetto? get a clue people. All Bill is wanting is for every one of us to know how to apply ourselves, and move forward. Lets have more hope black people. There was a time when all we had was hope, and faith. We use to trust more in God to bring us through. We have lost it all, and we have the nurve to fault this man for telling the truth. If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. Stand up, and be fair, and truthful to yourselves. Stop findind fault in others, find yourself, get past what people think about you. If you know who you are. Then what others say wont even matter. The bible says in Proverbs that a wise man recieveth instruction (constructive criticism), and a foolish man takes offence, and turns away. Listen with your hearts.

Dr. Patterson said on November 20th, 2007

I agree with Nicole also. Mr. Cosby is a very smart andsavvy individual. At the same time to that does not give him the right to slander anyones wrongs based on his opinion. Wrong is wrong and right is right some of the issues that he discussed were on point with the current state of Black America. The flip side to his comments is the negative that it adds to the our people. Keep your negative comments to your self just because some of itmay be true does not give you the right to judge, slander, and disrespect people. Also because he is so educated you would have thought that he would recgonize that this life style that many are living has a direct link to the past. Read the Willie Lynch Letter and you will see. Another thing since he can go all over America and broad cast what he believes to be true about Black America does he have any avaiable time on his gossiping tour to help change the very people whom he is talking about. The bible says my people are destroyed from a lack of knowledge educate them each one teach one and watch how great the power of one could be. Keep your negetive to your self Bill and put your words into action not a book.

CHAZZ said on November 23rd, 2007

I agree with Cosby on something’s but somewhere down the line the negativity and degrading of black people should stop. I’m sure there are things in his closet he don’t want to be known and talk about. I’m talking about things im sure he have done in the past that would be label as being black. I think its not what we say but how we say it. Sometimes people think because they rich and famous they can say anything they want to say and that’s not true. Everybody who name there children African names or black names however you want to say it they are not all bad and not all in jail. I think that was a rude and very degrading statement. It has nothing to do with white people hearing or seeing what is taking place. I think that some white people can care less. I’m not concern about the white people imp concern on how we treat each other as black people. Lets help each other, encourage each other and keep each other lifted in prayer.

MS. Understood said on November 24th, 2007

Bill Cosby is on point. The horrible thing about this is that Black America wants to put blinders on our eyes and bandages on our bruises. Problems he has addressed deals with the healing within our community. If we can’t stand for the truth we will fall for all the lies, and deceptive steriotypes that other nationalities have placed on us.

While in high school Bill Cosby worked before AND after school in order to help support his family. He flunked 10th grade, then did 4 years in the NAVY working with rehabbing vets of the Korean War. He got his GED then went to Temple and got his degree in phys ed. He did all this during the civil and racial turbulence of the ’50s and early ’60s.

I’m amazed that some of you uppity negroes–whose very existance in modern societal “middle class” is due in small part to the affirmative action he helped solidify–have the audacity to doubt A) his sincerity and B) his authenticity. Bill Cosby has NOTHING to prove to any of us about his “black struggle”…how many of us can say the same?

I take issue with the part where the writer says, “Y’all know he’s a little right” He’s A LOT right, Bill Cosby grew up in a time where blacks had a lot of people to be proud of, people who knew that the right direction did not involve focusing on 20 inch rims or bragging that you are so rich that you dont care if someone gets pregnant by you. I could go on but it’s pointless because the situation isnt going to change and that is simply sad.

andre said on December 28th, 2007

Oh and to Big D!ck, clearly from your nic it is quite obvious that you are in the business of telling lies and spreading propaganda, I guess you probably don’t know what means because it has in more than two syllables, but it’s ok it’s not your fault your stupid, it’s the ghetto. I understand why you have a problem reading something that is in standard english. You should not have to take responsibility for your own stupidity, be happy with your own state and the state of black people. I think you are brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

Tia said on January 4th, 2008

The problem I have with Bill Cosby is that he talks about the problems in the Black community, but he’s not taking any action to solve them. You can talk about all this negative stuff but what good does that bring if you’re not doing anything about it. I don’t see him donating money to organizations to help relieve certain problems or establishing an organization himself. Also, does he not realize that a lot of problems that black people face or a direct link to racism? I’m not saying to blame everything on the “white man” but some things are unavoidable. Bill Cosby and some people on this blog have made comments about black people’s speech. First of all, if you study linguistics, African people and their descendents have a certain vernacular that they speak. What’s wrong with that? Asian people can’t change their accents, so I don’t see what’s wrong with black people speaking a certain way. We always put white people on a hierarchy because in this society. “white is right”. Its time for that to be challenged. If I want to name my my child Shaquana or whatever, that’s my personal decision and it shouldn’t be a problem. If I can;t get a job for having a certain name then that company needs to be sued for discrimination. I know a an asian guy at my school named Eun Woo, nobody says anything about that.

Tia said on January 4th, 2008

And sadly some of Bill’s comments (and on this blog) sound similar to some of the white so-called liberalists who I go to school with. I think someone needs to read Malcolm X or Marcus Garvey. People obviously have a problem with blackness.

rayllineum said on January 7th, 2008

right on bill!!!!!! he is right on time with a message that we need to hear,or least the parents that need that wake-up call.people that dont know what he was saying need to read what he said very slowly, make good choices, take responsability for the choices you make, dont look for a scape-goat when you do wrong, apologize,go back correct and make it right.and parents raising kids is about sacrificing some of your things for the better of your children, not sacrificing them for your pleasure, because if you sacrifice for them now, they may return the favor when you need them later on in your life. remember teachers teach our children, but you train your children.the teachers give them knowledge, but you live a life before them that trains them what to do with the knowledge they recieve, which is also called wisdom.

Bill Cosby is airing out our dirty laundry with no plan on how to take care of the many problems that the black community faces. He came to East Texas with the same rant about being a black child means you’re at risk. When asked the question on what to do he had no answers. This man has no plan no voice, yeah he made us laugh but what is he contributing, nothing. He has the means, get a group together and decide what can we do to better the community instead of saying what’s true and doing crap.

I agree w/ Cosby…most of it! The only part I’m a little shaky about is the whole name thing. We can’t help it if our parents (book smart, or not) decided to name us what they named us. Our names don’t make us or break us. There are a lot of “Tontos,” and “Shaniquas” who are living clean, moral, crime-free lives. And there are many, many “Johnnys,” “Samanthas,” “Larrys,” and “Tashas” who are NOT!
[enough ranting!]
As I said earlier, I agree w/ most of what Cosby said. We, as black ppl, need to LEARN to AGREE to ACCEPT the TRUTH! …Even if the truth hurts, it’s still the TRUTH! Even I - an African American - get annoyed w/ us. It’s like, I can’t hardly go anywhere w/o my ppl acting crazy, talking totally louder than needed and quick to engage in violent behavior all b/c somebody “looked at ‘em crazy” (or so they think). People like myself (i.e. ppl who just want to live peacefully, etc, etc) don’t want to be around ALL THAT MESS! And someone asked the question (and stated that…): why is Cosby only ranting on us blacks? Well, from what all I can see, it’s probably b/c HE’S BLACK AND HE’S CONCERNED ABOUT HIS OWN PEOPLE! …Just like Caucasians are concerned about their own, etc, etc. Of course, Cosby knows that it’s not just blacks who are acting foolishly, but he’s focused on us b/c he loves us (his ppl) and he doesn’t want us (his people) to continue in the downward spiral. We should be happy that someone is CONCERNED about us and our well-being.

And yeah, racism still exists, but w/ all the drama we caused amongst ourselves, it doesn’t HELP the situation! We are definately on the criminal end of crime against ppl of our race.
It’s all about putting our priorities in order…and even deeper than that, it’s about FIGURING OUT WHAT’S IMPORTANT. It’s easy to say put priorities in order, but if a person doesn’t know what things in life SHOULD be of greater importance, how are they going to put ‘em in order of ‘most important’ to ‘least important’?

Trane said on February 27th, 2008

Cosby is venting a bunch of EMPTY hot air. Ok, he stated the obvious, now what? Where are the plans for forward movement and upward mobility? And I’m not talking about changing our names either. Parents choose these names for there kids in order to deviate from the cultural genocide that our people have undergone over the course of centuries. We are the only race without a native tongue! What is he going to say next, “hate your brown skin.”? We need something to call our own. I guess that he has a problem with our sisters who display pride in their race and heritage by not applying chemicals and hot combs to their hair.

His rhetoric is eerily similar to that of white bigots. Tearing down without a plan to build up is not helping. Especially when you do it on national TV. Simply put…HE’S A TOM.

Mr. Cosby is on point with his opinions about black america, although many of his views may seem harsh, we must take them as being constructive criticism and take a look at how we can encourage, uplift and help our brothers and sisters to build positive communities.

Lets face it we all have issues that must be dealt with, but in order to deal with our issues, we must first acknowledge that we have a problem.

Black people are POWERFUL. We built pyramids and were KINGS & QUEENS back in the day and are still KINGS & QUEENS today, so its time that we stop all of this self destruction and rightfully take our place in society.
