“Girlfriends” Cancellation

February 12th, 2008

Just as striking writer’s head back to work, rumors are swirling that “Girlfriends” will get the boot - for real this time. Sources say there will be no ninth season, AND that Monday’s new episodes were the last. If it’s true, that’s a dang shame for the writers and the cast. Confirmation on the way.

Update: It’s official. Word has it that producers were trying to bring back “Toni Childs’” character for their ninth and final season. The show was also one year away from being the longest-running African American sitcom in history. So much for that.

Say it ain’t so. I love my girlfriends. I keep my datebook opened at the time they’re scheduled to come on, and when I have to miss an episode I get real upset. I hope that this rumor is not true. Who is the other person in the picture? I don’t recognize her.

J said on February 12th, 2008

don’t believe it. I was just reading that while there won’t be a ninth season(which I thought was going to be spent seeing Joan pregnant) there will be a proper series finale. Hopefully Joan will get married and will bring a proper end to the series.

And the other woman in the the pic is Erykah Badu. that picture was taken from the episode where she guest starred.

I find the context and tone of this post irresponsible. “BOOTED”, Why downplay the fact that this show has been on for 8 seasons? Sometimes BET respresents us in the wrong matter. Support the black community. BET is letting VIACOM, mock us.

Absolut said on February 12th, 2008

oh hell noo!!!girlfriends is one of my favorite shows.we already don’t have enough shows representing our community and they wanna cancel this one, which shows black women in a positive light. Why? are the ratings down or is the cast just tired of doing the show???

The show is great but a lot of the drama went when Toni left the show and I love my beautiful sister believe you me but Toni had a lot of drama with her and as I watch re-runs she brought alot to the show taking nothing from Lynn, Mya and of course Joan and that Apple Bottom she has but Toni had that spark…… She ignited so many fires its not even funny….. They are The Four Horseman of black TV………..

I agree with everyone else Girlfriends is my favorite show to watch on Monday nights…while I want it to stay for one more season, I just hope they do right by it and tie everything up with Joan getting married, her and toni reuniting, and the birth of william’s new baby with his wife..To me that would be the best way to honor the fans who have been watching for the past 8 years It would also allow “THE GAME” to step and fill the gap because they have room to grow and be just as good as Girlfriends.

I’ve watched Girlfriends from the very beginning and to see it go will be like FOX taking away The Simpsons. It’s a staple show that shows women the empowerment of females in todays society that can come from nothing and become something and show the different adversities in life. As a hispanic, there aren’t too many shows out there in my community like this one. Our shows consist of women at home, obeying the men, cooking and cleaning and wathing the children. I don’t want my son to grow up thinking that those are the only things that women can do. We need more shows like this and to see it go will be a shame.

It is a great show. I’ve been watching the show since the beginning but they have ran out of story lines. I hope they get it together and bring back Jill Marie Jones, hopefully the ratings will come back stronger.

THERE WERE 2 REASONS WHY I USED TO WATCH “GIRLFRIENDS’; 1. ITS EARLIER SHOWS WERE VERY FUNNY& 2. FORMER CAST MATE JILL MARIE JONES WHO IS SOOOO FINE, WITH LIPS SO LUCIOUS, ANGELINA JOLIE WOULD BE EXTREMELY JEALOUS. HOWEVER, THIS SHOW(ART IMMITATING LIFE)REFLECTED WHY MOST BLACK WOMEN TODAY LOSE US GOOD BLACK MEN, BECAUSE MOST BLACK WOMEN ARE MATERIALISTIC,TOO CAREER ORIENTED, SELFISH, SELF-CENTERED, CONCEITED,DISRESPECTFUL(ONLY TO THOSE BLACK MEN WHO ARE POOR & STRUGGLING)& BELIGERENT. THE CHARACTER WILLIAM WAS A WHIMP, & SELLOUT NEGRO(NEED TO GROW) REPUBLICAN.

I agree with the above, Girlfriends has run its course. I have not missed an episode on T.V. I love the show, but it’s just not the same. Some episodes I find myself wondering why are they still on T.V. They should get out now if it does not get any funnier. At least they will leave with good ratings.

PURPLEGURL said on February 13th, 2008

I will definitely miss Girlfriends. It was one of my favs. The black shows never get a finale! They just cancel ‘em and leave you hanging! It was a long running show and deserved a better ending.

BAMBI said on February 14th, 2008

I will miss girlfriends. I hope it continues, but it need a new aspect and writing for the characters to play their role. It has gotten a bit boring, but I hope that Joan finaly get married, Monica and William have their baby, Mia gets a multiple book contract and she and Darnell will come further together as a couple, Lynn to finally settle down with a career that she is finally happy with and find a man with a good soul that will be her match, and finally bring back Toni’s character so that she and Joan can reconcile.

Andi said on February 14th, 2008

I think I am about to cry, just when we start to get successful the stupid writers strike want to take away the good Shows. I have just gotten used to Toni being off the show..now this??? Why??? I love GIRLFRIENDS and if they are going to end, PLEASE don’t end like all the other show, with a big Cliffhanger.. :( I hope Joan gets married.

I am a guy and I love watching GirlFriends. I can’t go without wahcing this show. I think that it show how African American ife is in some aspect. In this day in age, we are African Americans dont have much to watch on tv. It is funny to watch the how this show has come so far. I think it is owed to the faitfu; viewers of this how to go on to the new season, so we can she Joan get married, Lynn have a platinum album, Mya and Darnyl have another hild and Toni come back. in my opinion, it eeds to go ten seasons or more. This is a great sho. Oh hell no

To: Ms. Dawn Ostroff(Pres of Entertainment – CW Network),
Ms. Traci Blackwell (Dir of Current Programming – CW Network)
and Ms. Nancy Tellem(President of CBS Paramount Network TV)[…]

I am writing to express my disappointment in CW’s decision to discontinue production of “Girlfriends”. I have enjoyed the fantastic portrayals by its actors and the strong writing that was delivered for many seasons now. I am particularly annoyed that you have elected to wrap this series without even a Final episode. Your press statement about the, “extremely unusual business environment,” does not address the lack of respect you are showing your loyal viewers by deciding on such a sudden departure, much less no announcement that the series would be ending later this year. I watch your other programs almost exclusively by being lead into them by GF’s, so you’re about to lose one viewer here for more than just that one program. Since I do believe that one person can make a difference, I’d like to let you know I am going to compile a list of your advertisers and their contact information and make it readily available on the internet for use by anyone who feels as I do about your GF decision. As a 2nd year medical school student, clinical editor and person of color, I believe that your advertisers would like to know that their advertising dollars aren’t going to bring them the result they desire, by putting their products on your network. I believe easy access to your advertiser lists will help other fans to express similar views. I hope you will reconsider your decision, you don’t have any suitable replacements for the fan base of this program. Thank you for your time. Mark Dunham

Girlfriends has been nothing but wonderful entertainment. i have been a devoted viewer since i was 10 years old so it feels as though Girlfriends is a part of my life. I was shocked to hear the cancellation rumor and if it is true i will be devastated. How this is even a possibility is beyond my understanding. Girlfriends was meant from day one to stay on the air for as long as possible. And while the season has been a little rocky wtihout toni it is not time for this legacy to be over. Girlfriends is a positive voice in black entertainment and should not be coming to an end anytime soon. I WOULD LIKE TO LEAVE A COMMENT FOR TRANE, WHOEVER YOU ARE. IF THE SHOW WAS SOOOOO BAD, WHY ARE YOU WATCHING IT? AND IN THE WORDS OF MYA WILKES, YOU CAN EITHER GIVE MY ASS A KISS OR KISS MY ASS! YAHH TRICK HOW YOU LIKE THEM FAMILY VALUES?

I think it’s a shame that the show has ended. Why is it the when quality entertainment that comes across in a position perspective for African American’s is thriving, it’s STOPPED!!! Now, if it were a show that focused on negative young men and women that were either uneducated or uncouth then maybe it would have been considered showing through it’s final season. Why can’t our networks focus on bringing more quality shows and get rid of the flavor flav’s, i love new york’s and tela tiquela’s…
