Is This The End of the Hip-Hop Clothing Line?

I appreciate LL Cool J. I used to bop my head to “I Need Love” when I barely had teeth, and loved “Doin’ It” despite only being in 7th grade (don’t be like me, though, kids). Having said that, I can’t remember the last time I’ve played an LL Cool J song. Can you?

I thought so, which leads me to this question: If people don’t listen to LL Cool J like that anymore, why would anyone want to dress like him?

When I think of the words LL Cool J and fashion my only memory is of him with one pant legged rolled up. The last time that was hot was back when we used to call him Marion Hill.

That’s why I’m not surprised that Sears will discontinue LL’s line due to poor sales.

LL not the only one when a failing line either. A while back there were rumors that Snoop Dogg’s clothing line was suffering from fledging sales.

Andre 3000’s clothing line Benjamin Bixby was launched last year and has also reportedly had problems moving merchandise. Shocker that many people aren’t willing to spend hundreds of dollars on a sweater from a rapper in a recession.

T.I. has a line that he’s trying to push. So does Jeezy. So do the Clipse. Soulja Boy mentioned doing one. Bow Wow’s said to be trying another line, too.

But with so many lines outside of Sean John and Rocawear fledging, is it time for rappers to stop channeling their inner designer and find a new side hustle?

Well it looks like you won’t have to wait for the next Karrine Steffans book to fill your void for celebrity freak tales: The ooh’s (I’m being polite) are giving it away for free now.

A new site called Tales from a Groupie offers stories of one night stand’s with hip-hop’s famous.

Among the many called out include André 3000

Here’s a preview:

“Andre is hung, and he knows it. He wears tight whites, too (so cute). So if you see a bulge in his pants, it’s real, it’s really real!! As for his technique, he’s very easy going. I kind of expected some freaky-deaky voo-doo feather fanning incense burning ‘Ommmmmm’ sex- but no. He’s like a boyfriend, he gives you what you want, gets what he wants, he’s verbal, but not vulgar. He’s just a grown man about it all. He’s one of the ones you’d let spend the night. He’s one of the ones you JUST MIGHT get up and cook some breakfast for. :-)

Talk about Hey Ya! That’s nice she thought about making him breakfast. Too bad there’s no point in sticking around for pancakes and eggs when you’ve already gotten dessert.

Now if you’ll excuse me. I’m about to go run my PC past a free clinic.

Ready for the Book of Badu?

A lot of people have criticized Erykah Badu for having children with multiple fathers. As long as I don’t have to pay child support for any of them, she can do what she pleases with her uterus.

But, one thing I wouldn’t mind learning a little bit about is what exactly she does to the men she dates.

During her VH1 Storytellers set last year Erykah said, “Don’t listen to the tabloids, they’re not always true, but what they say about me and the men? Yeah, that’s true.”

You see, she acknowledges that she’s behind André 3000 dressing like seven decades ago. And now she’s contemplating writing a book about it.

As fun as her Twitter page is, there’s only so much you can say in 140 characters or less. Wouldn’t a book themed around how she turns everyone out make for a good read?

I’d much rather read that than Karrine Steffan’s upcoming book on how to seduce a man…and get death threats from his wife.

BET.com Exclusive: Andre 3K Plays Dress-Up

Published by DeMarco Williams on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 4:25 pm.

Andre Benjamin and Antwan Patton were wearing baseball jerseys long before they were a hip hop cornerstone. The outcasts rocked plaid shorts, duck boots and Girbaud jeans before you, too. So, it kinda makes sense then that Dre would take this love of fashion to the next level.

Benjamin Bixby is the clothing line birthed from Andre 3000’s colorful mind. Look at the pics. You know the guy’s style. We’ll call it a funky semblance of 30s era sensibilities with a flair for the dramatic. But rather than speculate on the labels the talented rapper/actor uses in his own description, we’d rather go to the man himself and get his thoughts on his new higher-end brand (items at Neiman Marcus and Barney’s range from $75 bowties to $1,595 leather jackets), his own style evolution and hip hop’s relevance to fashion.
