50 Of The Most Iconic Black TV Characters (50-41)

However, Black characters often (and sadly) get over looked. That’s why I put together a list of some of the most iconic Black characters in TV history counting down from 50 to 1. Each list will be broken up into groups of 10 for the week. Check back every day do see which of your favorites ranked. Enjoy!
50. Deputy Rainesha Williams (Niecy Nash) – Reno 911
The prosthetic big booty and the baby hair already add enough personality. But once she opens her mouth you realize that at some point in your life, you have encountered a real life character like this who was sadly in a position of authority.
49. Arnold Jackson (Gary Coleman) – Diff’rent Strokes
Gary Coleman had done stints on other TV shows as a similar type of character. He was cute, precocious and wisecracking but his famous line, “Whatcu talking about Willis,” from Diff’rent Strokes is what immortalized this character in pop culture history.
48. Bonnie Bennett (Katerina Graham) – Vampire Diaries
The character in the book wasn’t a sista, but Bonnie being Black in the TV show adds new flavor that ironically takes race out of the equation. Bonnie is a witch discovering her new powers, who will stop at nothing to protect her friends. TV executives could learn a lot from this character. Despite being played by a Black woman, she isn’t a stereotype and proof of why diversity in TV can work without exaggeration.
47. Michael Evans (Ralph Carter) – Good Times
Michael Evans was the precocious little brother on Good Times who was often smarter than the adults. He was always up to date on current events and used his intelligence to enlighten some of the other ignorant folk around him.
46. Freddie “Rerun” Stubbs (Fred Berry) – What’s Happening
Rerun wasn’t a good student when it came to academics, but he could dance circles around anyone. He was constantly competing in dance contests. This is one of the first national introductions got of pop locking on TV.
45. Kimberly Reese (Charnele Brown) – A Different World
Kimberly was on scholarship and had to work for any extra money she got because her father didn’t play. She represented the reality of staying in school for a lot of Americans. If those grades drop and that scholarship slips through the cracks, then there‘s going to be trouble. Luckily for her, she made it through and managed to find time to enjoy her college years too.
44. Maxine Shaw (Erika Alexander) – Living Single
Maxine was a wise cracking, food obsessed lawyer who was driven and always got what she wanted, even the man she hated.
43. Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley) – Glee
Yes, she is the stereotypical sassy black girl on Glee but what’s not to love about her killer voice and tell-it-like-it-is attitude?
42. Carlton Banks (Alfonso Ribeiro) – The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Carlton was the antithesis of his street-smart cousin, Will. He was a snob to the third degree but despite his annoying quirks, it was easy to appreciate his misguided attempts at dancing.
41. Leon Phelps (Tim Meadows) –Mad TV
Leon Lonnie Love was Mad TV’s offbeat love doctor who despite zany advice and beliefs, still managed to get ladies hooked.
