American Idol Lacking Color

Published by Starr Rhett on Friday, February 27, 2009 at 9:00 am.

Three more contestants were named last night to be included in American Idol’s top 12, leaving six spots left for finalists. It’s disappointing that there’s no African-American talent chosen so far, especially for a show that’s known for blessing the world with dynamic talent like Fantasia Barrino, Ruben Studdard and Jennifer Hudson.

Is America not moved this time by our soul brothas and sistas vying for stardom? They’re just as talented as the other folks chosen. Sure, it’s not over just yet, but it’s still surprising (and a travesty). Hopefully things will go differently next week. Then again, maybe Americans wanted change in more areas than one.

But we’ll keep hope alive for the next two weeks. Maybe Stephen Fowler will pull through in the wild card round.

Is the absence of African American talent chosen disappointing?

It is disappointing, but the contestants of color that have performed so far have not been great Stephen Fowler’s “Rock With You” was a travesty, as was Jasmin Murray’s “Love Song” and Jeanne’s “This Love.” They’re not putting out great performances like Fantasia, Ruben, Jennifer, or Jordin did. That’s a shame considering that Jasmine was an early favorite.

First, we have to accept the idea that the American public doesn’t really choose anyone on these programs. It’s good for advertising to make folks believe they have a say. With that noted, I think they look for different things each year. It’s not about race per se but more so about what Randy may think he can work with in the future. If I remember right, it IS his show.
