Slash is one of the last artists I would expect to ever see on American Idol, but one can’t be too stingy about where you collect your checks in a recession. The Guns ‘N Roses guitarist served as guest mentor to the four remaining finalists as they entered “Rock Week” on American Idol.

Before the show kicked off Ryan Seacrest warned audiences that because of technical difficulties that occurred on set earlier in the day the contestants were not able to have a proper run through before show time.

Judging from the show’s first performer, Adam Lambert, you couldn’t tell there had been any problems as the always eager singer seemed right at home covering “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zepplin.

Whenever I look at him I think of 80s rock anyway, so he had no choice but to out do the others.

Despite Adam being a hard act to follow, Allison Iraheta tried her hardest to keep up via a cover of Janice Joplin’s “Crybaby.”

For once the 17-year-old stuck up for herself when hit with criticism from the judges – which was more enjoyable than her actual performance.

Kris Allen tackled The Beatles “Come Together,” and made me long for Michael Jackson’s rendition from Moonwalker in the process.

Equally as forgettable was Danny Gokey’s take on “Dream On” by Aerosmith. Well, everything besides that scream he threw out at the end that sounded like the cries of a woman in labor.

While both can certainly sing, Allen and Gokey are just mismatched for the rock genre.

All and all the show is winding down and with every passing week I can’t see how voters don’t give this to Adam Lambert.

Oh and as for those duets producers snuck into the show: I vote no.
