Jada Pinkett-Smith Returns to TV in June

Published by Starr Rhett on Friday, April 3, 2009 at 2:07 am.

Stay Tuned reported last Fall, that Jada Pinkett-Smith would be returning to TV with a show onTNT called Time Heals. I guess the name got changed because I recently read that she would be coming to TNT in June, starring in a drama called Hawthorne.

Hawthorne takes place at Richmond Trinity Hospital in Richmond, Va., where the strong, caring director of nursing, Christina Hawthorne (Pinkett-Smith), often finds herself fighting battles she usually doesn’t win. Whether treating the homeless person in front of the hospital like a human being or trying to talk a suicidal cancer patient off the ledge, Christina must challenge hospital administrators, heartless doctors, apathetic colleagues and a system that sometimes forgets it’s there to serve the sick. Christina is also a single mother struggling in her personal life.

Jada Pinkett-Smith is also executive producer of the series, which is wonderful. I don’t know if I’ll watch because it sounds a little too serious (I watch TV for amusement, not to get teary-eyed). However, seeing a strong Black woman on TV won’t hurt. Plus, it’s great that Miss Pinkett is in charge of the image she portrays. Hopefully more sistas in Hollywood will follow suit and start their own production companies.

The night of the fight, you may feel a slight sting. That’s pride f*cking with you. F*ck pride. Pride only hurts, it never helps.

During the trailer for the series premiere, Helen Hunt’s little sister from Mad About You says to Jada “I won’t sit here and be lectured TO by a nurse.” This somehow got by the writers, script editors, actors, director and the executive producer of the show. “Lecture” is a transitive verb and so never takes a preposition as in “lectured to.” It may seem that I’m quibbling here, but this SHOULD sound like nails on a chalkboard to anyone who has ever read or heard the word “lecture” used as a verb. Does this sound as far from English to anyone else as it does to me? Come on. “Lectured to”?? How about “Lectured at”?? Doctors read. Apparently, the production team of this show does not. You’d never find such an erroneous construction on ER. Right out of bed, too. How embarrassing.

Maybe instead of donating to L. Ron Hubbard she could hire a real writer.

I am so looking forward to this show at least giving it a chance. I am also wondering if the person I see in the preview is Christel Khalil from Y&R. Great if it is. One thing I would ask of Starr Rhett: Stop with the strong BLACK woman thing. It is just great to see a strong woman portrayed on TV. Just like Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, etc. I am black but I am first a Christian who is American of African ancestry and I for one am looking ahead to a time where we are one nation under God in reality not just theory and I believe it has to start somewhere so let’s start with references. Back to the show, I think you are right, it is going to be great!

I THINK IT IS GOING TO BE GREAT SHE IS A GREAT LITTLE ACTOR IN HER OWN RIGHT. EVEN THOUGH SHE IS MARRIED TO THE BIGGEST MOVIE STAR ON THE PLANET. I AM SURE HE WILL MAKE A GUEST APPEARANCE.

I believe a people’s control of the media determines their level of freedom. As such, even though “Doogie Howser” was on a different station, how come a white youth can be a doctor, but a Black, adult female has to be a nurse (RN)? I don’t recall any medical series where the star was a nurse? Why couldn’t Jada Pinkett Smith be a Dr/MD? It may seem to some people like we’re (A-A’s) getting thrown bones, when we’re really getting thrown dead-skin. Our children always are guided to being the supportive, subordinant, menial labor personnel.

I just wanted to comment on Dred Scott’s assessment of a nurse’s role as being ’subordinant’ and ‘menial.’ Dred, you are sadly misguided, and while I don’t want a confrontation on the internet, I would like to set your record straight. Nurses are subordinate to no other profession. We are a self sustaining profession with edicts, skillsets and judgment of our own. Contrary to popular belief, doctors are not our bosses, and we as nurses operate with autonomy in many situations. We are not obligated to follow doctor’s orders if we do not agree with them, and lucky for you and the general public, this is a fact. Dred, nothing about nursing is ‘menial.’ Sure we may give baths and wipe asses, however, we also alert the necessary people when the condition of a patient in our care worsens. We are usually the people who alert the doctor to an evolving issue and are usually the first to intervene when a patient crashes. If ever you suffer the misfortune of being hospitalized, Dred, please take a moment and realize: We can’t all be doctors. If we were, who would take care of the patients?
