RIP Bea Arthur

According to the AP: “Beatrice Arthur, star of The Golden Girls, passed away in Los Angeles Saturday (at 86). She died of cancer. The details on what type of cancer she had are sketchy but she went peacefully.
Besides The Golden Girls, Arthur starred in Maude, Dave’s World, Studio One, Kraft Television Theatre, Caeser’s Hour and Great Performances. She also had a memorable guest role on Malcolm in the Middle as Dewey’s babysitter.”
Even though I was barely out of diapers when The Golden Girls first hit the tube, it has a special place in my heart as one of my favorite TV shows of all time. The show was groundbreaking because it was the first time on television that senior citizens were shown living productive and fabulous lives. The Golden Girls were fly, they still dated, they moved around freely (sans wheelchairs) and were stylish.
Every stereotype that I had about elderly women was negated by that show. My Aunt was an avid fan and would babysit my cousin and I every Saturday night—I always looked forward to the three of us piling into her bed to watch the show. Arthur was our favorite Gloden Girl because she played the sarcastic but grounded, Dorothy Petrillo.
Of course, the best part was the show was the theme song. Even before Thundercats, Punky Brewster, My Little Pony and Monchichis, the first theme song I ever learned (and still remember) was “Thank You for Being a Friend.” Rest in Peace Bea Arthur and congratulations on your long and productive career. Your presence on TV will be missed.
