Soul Singer Raphael Saadiq Will Tackle TV

Soulman Raphael Saadiq is tackling the tube. The former Tony Toni Toné front man is one of the executive producers of a new sitcom entitled Love That Girl!, based on the first single from his latest album, The Way I See It.

The show, which stars Tatyana Ali (who plays Tyana Jones) is about a divorcee who returns to her hometown in South Carolina to reclaim her independence, find a new career and move into the next phase of her life. The twist comes in when she gets a surprise visit from her brother, an aspiring stand-up comedian, whose overnight visit turns into a permanent stay.

Additionally, although the main character’s  father is happy to see his daughter following in his footsteps in the real estate business, he’s not to pleased that she is working for his competition.

Martin Lawrence, Bentley Kyle Evans (The Jamie Foxx Show), Jeff Franklin (Full House) and Trenten Gumbs (Rude Boy: The Jamaican Don) are also executive producers on the series.

Four episodes have been taped so far but no network affiliation or premiere date has been announced yet. I hope they get it together soon, we need more Black shows sans the buffoonery.

I’m guessing it’s going to take on the traditional tone of a sitcom, but I wonder if Saadiq will score the show and if he does, will he keep up with the vintage Motown theme that his album has. Speaking of music, if you haven’t heard that Raphael Saadiq album yet, you’re doing yourself a serious disservice.
