Stay Tuned Salutes Diahann Carroll

Stay Tuned saluted Hattie McDaniel earlier this month in honor of Women’s History. The next honoree is Diahann Carrol for her role as Julia Baker in the late 1960’s sitcom, Julia.
Diahann Carroll is a well-rounded actress who has appeared in TV and film, but Julia was important because it was the first time since Beulah that a sitcom starred an African-American.
Julia was a half-hour comedy premiering on NBC in September 1968 and ran until January 1971. It aired during a period of heightened activism and turmoil over the position of African-Americans in U.S. society, and was the first time an American network attempted to address such issues. Most people credit The Cosby Show with being the first time African-Americans were seen on TV in non-stereotypical roles—not knowing about Julia, which was about a widowed nurse raising her song alone (in Los Angeles) after her husband was killed in Vietnam.
Series creator, Hal Kanter was a Hollywood liberal and broadcasting aficionado who wrote for the Beulah radio show in the 1940s. He was inspired to pitch the idea after attending a luncheon for the NAACP. Although the network agreed to run the show, programmers didn’t expect it to do well but it was surprise success, jumping into the top ten list of most watched programs during its first year.
Julia is solidified in American broadcasting history because it aired during a time when television programmers didn’t bother to introduce African-Americans into entertainment formats without relying on stereotypes. Diahann Carroll was bold enough to play the role and that’s why we love her. Hopefully other TV execs will step up to the plate and recreate a sitcom of the like, for the modern African-American audience. I don’t think there’s been a show in that vein since Robert Townsend’s The Parent ‘Hood, back in the late ’90s.
