Dreamland Recap: Dance Off

The girls have sung on the street, stopped and posed for the frame, so now it’s only natural for the remaining four girls to drop down low and sweep the flo’ with it.

At the beginning of last night’s episode, the girls were taken to a dance studio to meet with choreographers Victor and Rah-Rah.

Being a big girl, Sabrina seemed a little ambivalent about performing her choreographed routine. That’s a shame she didn’t put her all into it when Drumma Boy came to see her perform. Everyone knows big girls can get down on the floor. It’s all in the extra hips.

But it wasn’t just the chunky crew that couldn’t get it right; neither could Kia. And you can add Leaf to the list. I’m not entirely sure what they were doing with her, but if you ask me, guitars and twirking don’t really fit.

The only one who really stood out with confidence and seemed to get the moves down pat was Bianca. Jazze Pha seemed to find her too overconfident, but hey, I thought she did better than those other three.

To be fair to the girls who seem a bit rhythm-deficient, there are a bunch of girls out there who can’t do anything but stand there.

In the end, rhythm didn’t save Bianca from elimination as she and Sabrina were given the boot. Bianca said she felt Jazze made the wrong decision. I’m inclined to agree, but it’s his call.

Now we’re down to the final two: Leaf and Kia.

Who do you think will win?

Dreamland Recap: I’m Ready For My Closeup

Judging from his response at the beginning of this week’s episode of Welcome to Dreamland, Jazze Pha isn’t all that keen on Drumma Boy’s extra dose of confidence.

As Drumma Boy ranted about how he took over the city of Atlanta in a year’s time, Jazze Pha attempted to drag him back to Earth by asking him what single does he have currently on the charts.

His response was essentially: “Huh? Uhh, don’t worry about all that, just worry about the competition.”

Though the ladies sat there and watched their team leaders go back and forth, they had their own battle to contend with the next morning when each headed back to round two of boot camp.

I never understand why show producers have their contestants run with sticks, fetch cheesecake, or jump rope in a singing competition. There are a bunch of singers out now who sound like their parents are frogs so what’s the point in making the girls do an obstacle course and sing on the spot?

I felt bad for baby Kelly Price. Ya’ll know it’s not fair to ask a heavy set (yet fly) person to roll down the ground like she’s 7-years-old. Thankfully, Sabrina persevered. That’s right, watch out for the big girls.

After losing their breath on the field, Team DSU headed to the studio for choreography. Every group member was assigned to perform a song but Leaf – clearly forgetting that viewers just learned her name three weeks ago – decided she wanted to do her own song. She apologized soon after, but she’s officially the diva of that bunch.

After Team DSU got their steps in order they joined Team Phezel in stopping and posing for the frame for a test photo shoot.

Based on the results of their photos Ilia and Shari were dropped.

Never Get Too Cocky

Welcome To Dreamland stuck to the musical talent show formula for its second episode.

Talent scout and show host Vawn woke up the girls early in the morning to drag them to boot camp. I guess there’s something about doing push ups and crying on-air that convinces some people that you really want to be a star.

The members of Team DSU were brought to renowned vocal coach Jan Smith for an evaluation. Each girl did pretty well minus Shari. Poor thing sounded like her throat was possessed by a goat. Jan Smith was blunt with Drumma Boy about there being challenges with her.

Meanwhile the girls of Team Phenzel were assigned to perform a rendition of the national anthem. Each girl sang well enough to almost make me feel good about paying taxes (almost).

Well, almost every girl. Jennifer was disappointed in herself because she felt she didn’t put a real spin on the song. Jazze Pha seemed to agree – calling her rendition awful. He asked, “How could you do that to you country?”

Judging from the comments made by Nicole “Grady Baby,” if there was going to be a feud between any of the ladies, it would have been between Shari and her. Nicole said, “I just think she should go on So You Think You Can Dance.”

Too bad for Nicole she got booted from Team Drumma Boy. I guess that’s what happens when you talk slick about others when you’re not all that hot yourself.

Joining Nicole in elimination was Miss Versatile, Jennifer.

Lessons from tonight’s episode: Don’t butcher the anthem and don’t talk noise about anyone unless you know your own spot is secure.

Dreamland Recap: Get On The Bus

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 2:51 am.

BET’s new reality series Welcome to Dreamland premiered last night.

The show kicked off with talent scout and show host Vawn making house calls to would be contestants.

Each female singer had to display their vocal chops in order to receive a special invite to join the Dreamland bus. That special invite was pretty much Vawn telling each selected girl, “Get your a** on the bus!”

The first singer we met was Leaf, who looks like the distant cousin Corrine Bailey Rae – only with a mysterious dot in the middle of her forehead.

Next up is Illia, who like every other contestant that followed her, chose to sing a classic gospel song.

Are gospel songs the best way to highlight your vocal ability or is it a singer’s way of kissing up to God for a quick favor? You be the judge.

After Illia, Vawn parked his tour in the middle of a parking lot where a bevy of girls tried to break it down in order to board the bus.

Once a group of girls were given a seat, they were then taken to a mansion where they met producers Jazze Phae and Drumma Boy.

They soon learned that if selected, each will join either Phae or Boy’s teams and compete.

Eight girls were chosen and split into groups of four. I know it may seem difficult to remember everyone’s name, so I helped break it down for each of you.

Team Phenzel (Jazze Phae)

Illia: Think Baby Teena Marie.

Bianca: The one who looks like Oliva’s long lost sister.

Jennifer “Versatile” – The one who beat on the bus like it owed her rent during her audition.

Kia: Yeah, you got me on this one. She’s pretty, though.

Team DSU (Drumma Boy)

Nicole “Grady Baby” — I Will Survive (The Pounds)

Shari — Wearing a weave inspired by Beyonce.

Sabrina: Cute girl. Reminds me of Kelly Price: The Early Years.

Leaf : The sequel to Corrine Bailey Ray.

That’s all for now. Until next week, ya’ll.
