For the Love of Ray J (Back For More)

Published by Starr Rhett on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at 11:00 am.

I hate that you’re probably going to get 50 IQ points dumber after reading this post, especially after my colleague, Michael A,  posted a blog about The Wire becoming a Harvard course. But I need someone, anyone, to share this random recap that is the inaugural episode of For the Love of Ray J Season 2.

Just when you thought it was safe to turn back to Vh1 on Monday nights, they return with more shenanigans of the same variety as Real Chance of Love. I watched with no shame (surely, I can’t be alone if there’s a second season of this nonsense). Last night’s episode was the typical madness. The new batch of girls arrived at the house to proclaim their wild passionate “love” for Ray J and to begin clawing their way to his heart. The first order of business was for them to receive their stripper names nicknames based on how they looked. As you can imagine, it’s the usual assortment of wannabe models and actresses so the names varied from “Exotica” to “Gifts.”

So far, Exotica is filling the void where last season’s “Caviar” left off. Exotica is a Cape Verdian bombshell with an incoherent accent but where she ups Caviar a notch is when it comes to dubious behavior. She began solidifying her status as the Queen B of the house by interrupting other women who were trying to get one on one time with Ray J, and by making negative comments about people’s looks.

“Fetuccini” (named because of her Italian heritage) was the first girl booted because Ray J deemed her a star chaser after the house was abuzz about the fact that she allegedly dated Tyson Beckford and various other celebrities. We already know she wasn’t the only girl there with ulterior motives, but if all the girls were eliminated then there would be no show (and no random amusement). Overall, I think this is going to be good in a bad, rot your brain kind of way. But at least Ray J looks better than Real and Chance.

What do you think?

Still Got Love for Ray J?

You all really love reality shows based on love, don’t ya?

Have to because VH1 has built an empire out of it. The network’s latest reality star chasing “love” (of publicity, money, and fill in the blank here) is Ray J.

Ya’ll couldn’t get enough of For The Love of Ray-J and as a result VH1 has green lit another season set to premiere on November 2.

Via the press release:

For The Love of Ray J 2” will bring 19 beautiful single ladies to Ray J’s luxurious mansion in the Hollywood Hills. With the help of VH1, Ray J will be able to see first-hand who can handle his fast-paced celebrity lifestyle. From hitting the hottest spots in LA to seeing if they can deal with the pressures of being Ray J’s girl, these women will be put to the test. Every week the ladies will get a chance to convince Ray J that they can keep up with his life in the spotlight and that they will do anything “For The Love of Ray J 2.”

Week by week Ray J will narrow down his entourage of female suitors hoping that he can find that one woman who can handle his iconic life. The ladies will be put through unique challenges, dates and eliminations to prove that they have love for Ray J. In the end, one special lady will win the ultimate prize -Ray J’s heart.”

Ray J’s heart, eh? The show could be called Mr. Potato Head’s Hunt For Love and they would write the same thing. Not to mention that “heart” used to come with a spread in King, but hey, these girls can still be grateful for the blogs to extend their 90 seconds of notoriety (calling it fame is a bit much).

You can catch a sneak peek of the season premiere of For The Love of Ray J 2 on VH1.com beginning Tuesday, October 27.

Ray J Looks For Love, Round Two

RayJ

The word around the blogosphere is that For the Love of Ray J will return for a second season. Given the track record for these types of shows, I’m not surprised. I initially brushed it off as blog rumor (since it typically takes about 10 blogs to equal one half-credible news source anyway) but did some investigating and surprise surprise, Cocktail, winner of season one, announced via her MySpace blog that she and Ray J were no longer together.

“When I was on the show, I truly fell for Ray. I invested my time, effort, and emotions into him and wanted things to work,” said Cocktail. “But the reality of reality television is that it doesn’t always work. Ray and I are no longer together. We have not been together for awhile now but we have remained friends and when we hang out we have a great time. I miss him very much and respect what decisions he has made.”

Blah blah blah anyway, she never stood a chance. I’m convinced that the contracts for these shows come with a ratings clause. If the show gets a certain amount of ratings, then season two (and possibly three) are automatic givens. Besides, who genuinely finds love in er, three weeks? I’m not complaining, it makes for great entertainment (more fuel for my reality TV addiction). Plus, anyone who goes on these shows really looking for love and not shameless promotion, is playing themselves. If you are said individual looking for 15 minutes of reality TV fame (or maybe you actually do have a crush on Ray), casting for season two has begun, as per Vh1’s website:

4.2 million viewers tuned in to see Ray J pick his leading lady on the For the Love of Ray J finale episode. Cocktail was crowned the winner and all seemed great for the happy couple. We next saw them on the reunion episode where both let viewers know they were excited to see how their relationship would progress! Ray J thought he had found “the one” but unfortunately, things didn’t work out – and he’s now single again.

As viewers saw last season, dating a hip-hip star is a full-time job which includes red carpet events, the paparazzi and handling all the crazy fans. For Ray J, dating has never been an issue – it’s finding the perfect woman that can be harder than you think… especially when you’re a celebrity. Since things didn’t exactly work out with his last girlfriend, Ray J is back to give love a second chance. As R&B’s most eligible bachelor, Ray J is determined to find a woman he can settle down with.

VH1 is looking for women with confidence, personality and class that can handle the pressure of being with a superstar and turn Ray J into a one-woman man. Beginning today, viewers and fans will have the opportunity to submit themselves for consideration on For the Love of Ray J 2. Online users can log onto VH1’s For the Love of Ray J 2 casting site at www.rayjcasting.com.

Ray J Chooses Cocktail

Published by Starr Rhett on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 12:00 pm.

Mama Norwood said it best when she said, “No, no and no” in reply to Ray J’s question, “Who do you think I should choose?” about the final three women.

After the drawn out hour and a half theatrics of last night’s episode were finally done, Ray J chose Cocktail to be his leading lady. Cocktail was a cool girl but I don’t think she was the best match, nor was Unique. I was actually hoping that last night’s episode would end in a draw, meaning that he didn’t pick either girl and that season two was only a couple of months away (which it might be given VH1’s dating show track record). However, he felt obligated to settle. The most rational decision he made last night was eliminating Danger. He started to see that she was insane which, anyone with a face tat is probably not stable but I digress.

On top of everything else, I’m still mad that Chardonnay got clipped. She was the realest most honest, and down-to-Earth girl in the house. I wish she had won. It appeared as though they had a lot of chemistry but if Ray J only felt her as a friend, then so be it.

The reunion show will be interesting. I’d like to see if Cocktail and Ray J are still interested in pursuing a relationship after three months of separation. Something tells me that seasons two, three, four and five might be in effect. OK, I’m exaggerating, or maybe that’s wishful thinking.

Chardonnay Gets the Axe

Published by Starr Rhett on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at 1:30 pm.

I never had a favorite on For the Love of Ray J until yesterday’s round of eliminations. For the most part, I managed to spectate with an objective view, no matter how ridiculous it got, but for the last couple of episodes, I started to like Chardonnay. I couldn’t picture her and Ray J together but I wanted her to make it at least to the final two.

In the beginning, she started out as the raunchy stripper who would drop into a split at any given nanosecond, but as time progressed, she showed another side—the cooler side. She was really down-to-Earth and stayed out of the drama in the house. In last night’s episode, Ray gave the girls a lie detector test which Chardonnay passed with 93% accuracy—the most honest out of all the women. They went on a solo date and clicked really well but Ray J eliminated her because he felt like she was more his homie than a lover. I saw that coming but I’m still disappointed. Let’s pour one out for Chardonnay.

For the Love of Ray J or…Your Husband?

Published by Starr Rhett on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at 2:05 am.

It’s only Tuesday, and there’s already a wtf moment from reality TV. Stilts was the latest contestant booted from For the Love of Ray J. because it was revealed that she was still legally married. How did Ray J. find out? He inquired about the wedding band she was wearing on her left ring finger and she “kept it real,” claiming that a divorce was in progress. (So why still wear a band?) Yet, when she made her final exit speech she said “I don’t want to get a divorce until I find someone I want to be with.” Well alrighty then…
