New York’s Entertainer Gets Spinoff Show

Published by Starr Rhett on Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at 11:00 am.

Notorious mama’s boy, Frank “The Entertainer” Moresco has finally gotten his own show. According to Cynopsis, Vh1 picked up 10 one hour episodes scheduled to premier in 2010. We first met him on I Love New York where he picked up notoriety as the 30-something man living in his parent’s basement. From there he went on to lose twice, on both seasons of I Love Money, so it makes sense that he got his own show. Watching him interract with castmates and his family was rather entertaining, no pun intended. The premise of his show revolves around life from mom and dad’s basement bachelor pad. I’m in. And to think, this is yet another show spawned by Flavor Flav’s Vh1 legacy.

Real Chance of Love Season Two Has Been Casted

Published by Starr Rhett on Monday, June 29, 2009 at 11:00 am.

The news of a second season of Real Chance of Love wasn’t a surprise but man, these shows cast fast! The line up for season two is ready to go. Starting August 3, at 9PM, viewers will be privy to more back-stabbing, curseouts, meltdowns, blowups, fighting and general catty behavior from women vying for the hearts of Stallionaire brothers, Real and Chance. Why anyone would want to date either one of these guys is beyond me. However, we do know that most of the women on these shows are aspiring [insert entertainment job here], so that’s my guess. I suppose, pretending to actually want one of these guys is a last resort for some of these girls. Plus, we still haven’t found anyone as obnoxious as New York yet, and we all know from previous shows in this vein, that these girls are really trying to be the next break out reality TV star. Are you not entertained? I am!

New York Urges Fans Not to Play Her

Published by Starr Rhett on Monday, May 4, 2009 at 2:00 am.

Break out reality TV star Tiffany “New York” Pollard has proven to be recession proof, whether you like it or not. New York Goes to Work premieres tonight at 10pm on Vh1, and it’s your chance to play antagonist (if that’s your style). In tonight’s episode, we get to see if she’ll be a ranch hand, a baker or an exterminator. I hope she gets ranch hand just so that I can see her bring out the inner HBIC diva that she’s famous for (and the drama that I crave for my reality TV fix). She is not getting down and dirty on anybody’s ranch!

Check out this clip where she reaches out to fans, urging them not to play her when choosing professions. At 1:33 she says she loves makeup and hair (that’s an understatement) and that she wants to be “one of those people that dresses people up.” Stylist much? In any event, I’m sure viewers will break her out of her delusions of fabulous employment. Most of the American public, haters and fans alike, want to see her get riled up. I can’t wait to see her as a waitress cursing someone out. It’s definitely coming.

Six Degrees of Flavoration

Published by Starr Rhett on Monday, April 6, 2009 at 2:54 am.

It’s actually more than six degrees but numero seis sounded catchier for the title of this post. Basically, I saw some commercials for New York’s forthcoming reality show, for the first time last weekend, and realized that Flavor Flav is single-handedly responsible for about 90% of Vh1’s reality TV shows. Let’s track his reality TV journey and see how it all began…

The Surreal Life

Flavor Flav was pulled from the depths of “where are they now” (the rap edition) and featured on season three of The Surreal Life. In a bizarre twist of events, he developed a relationship with 80s model Brigitte Nielsen and viewers couldn’t keep their eyes off the disaster. In fact, the pair was so fascinating that they got their own show:

Strange Love

And this, my friends, is when we officially thought that Flavor Flav had jumped the shark. However, the joke was on us. Brigitte Nielsen broke Flav’s heart, leaving him susceptible to the cunning wits of Vh1 producers, who convinced him to let them help his search for love on national TV. Hence, Flavor of Love was born and lasted for three seasons, until Flav finally decided that he wanted to make a relationship work with the mother of his youngest child.

Flavor of Love (season two’s cast photographed)

The break-out star from Flavor of Love was of course, Tiffany Pollard aka New York. After being strung along and eventually heartbroken by Flav twice, she got her own crack at finding love with:

I love New York (season one’s cast photographed)

New York thought she scored with Tailor Made by the end of season two and moved on to another show, New York Goes to Hollywood, which isn’t featured in this blog, but definitely gets honorable mention because without Flav, there would be no New York. She broke up with Tailor Made on NY Goes to Hollywood and was offered a third season of I Love New York, but declined. However, residual from I Love New York lingered. Break out stars “Real” and “Chance” were brothers competing for Tiff’s love and actually came close to winning NY’s heart.

Real Chance of love

They were such outstanding personalities, that once again, Vh1 struck gold with another spin off and are currently casting for season two. Whatever happened to those Flavor Flav girls? They appalled Black women in America so much that comedienne Mo’Nique made it her mission to help them learn etiquette and become respectable women.

Charm School

Although there was no reform school for the unruly men on New York’s dating show, everyone was brought together on I Love Money.

I Love Money

Technically, For the Love of Ray J and Rock of Love should also get honorable mention, as should Daisy of Love because these shows would not exist had it not been for the success of our giant clock laden, viking hat wearing friend. He provided the prototype for these types of shows, which also proved that viewers like to watch train wrecks whether it’s a guilty pleasure or point of pride. Thanks Flavor Flav, for fueling reality TV addictions all accross America.

New York Returns to Reality TV

Published by Starr Rhett on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at 12:28 am.

In yesterday’s post about the top Black Women on Reality TV, I chose Tiffany Pollard aka New York as number one and speculated that we haven’t seen the last of her on reality TV. Lo and behold, I was right. According to Vh1, New York Goes to Work will air on Monday, May 4 at 10/9c. This time around, viewers get to have a hand in Tiffany’s antics.

Tiffany has discovered that landing roles in Hollywood isn’t always so easy so she must get a day job. Each week America will choose from a list of three possible job opportunities and vote via their mobile phones by texting which job they would like to see her try. She could be anything from a mortuary beautician to a fast food employee. If she can impress her new employers, she’ll receive a $5,000 bonus each week. But, if she quits, fails, or gets fired, she’ll get nothing.

I will definitely be watching. How about you?

Top Black Women on Reality TV

Published by Starr Rhett on Monday, March 30, 2009 at 4:00 am.

Check out the most stand out Black women on reality TV from 1992-2009. Whether you love them or hate them, they have memorable attributes (and moments) that still comes up at the water cooler, even years later.

10. Devyn (Real World Brooklyn)

Black women in Reality TV are often stereotyped as the b—h or ABW but Devyn is the complete opposite. The Missouri Beauty Queen is laid back, articulate and extremely personable. Her bubbly personality breaks barriers helping people to see her beyond the color of her skin.

9. Taj (Survivor Tocantins)

This former R&B diva may be struggling on Survivor but she gets props for allowing us into her real world via her other show, I Married a Baller. She’s a great mother and wife, and watching her family on TV is inspiration for Black family unity.

8. Heather B. (Real World, season one)

Heather B. was the around-the-way-girl from NYC who although strong minded, was never intimidating. She made friends easily and showed that you can speak your mind without being obnoxious.

7. Coral (Real World season 10)

Coral was abrasive but viewers were always ready for the next tongue lashing she dished out. The most memorable was when she schooled her sheltered, prejudice cast mate Mike for expressing ignorant views about Black people. She, of course, beat him down verbally but also literally schooled him by making him report back to her every week, with knowledge about iconic Black History figures.

6. Tanisha (Bad Girls Club, season two)

When season two of Bad Girls Club first started, viewers wrote Tanisha off as the typical hood chick from Brooklyn who was loud and ghetto. She took the cake when she traipsed around her house banging pots and pans together in an attempt to disturb roommates in retaliation for them waking her up with loud talking. However, by the end of the season, she was falsely accused of participating in a fight and sent to jail (and racism), but she learned from the experience and decided to calm down her raucous behavior.

5. Vecepia Towery (Survivor: Marquesas)

She was the first African-American winner of Survivor. You’ve gotta be pretty tough to “survive” that show, and she did.

4. Sister Patterson (Flavor of Love, I Love New York and New York Goes to Hollywood)

We met Sister Patterson on season one of Flavor of Love. She was extremely belligerent and declared all out war against Flavor Flav. She was determined to keep her daughter New York née Tiffany, from being with him and fussed her way all the way to season two, when her daughter was invited back to try again for Flav’s heart. The second time wasn’t a charm for her daughter, but Sister Patterson made sure she had a say in her daughter’s life when New York got two spin off shows.

3. Omarosa (The Apprentice)

Love her or hate her, she demands respect. And if she feels that she is getting anything less, heads will roll.

2. NeNe (Real Housewives of Atlanta)

NeNe was the break out star from Bravo’s the Real Housewives of Atlanta. We loved her because she was sassy and fearless. She took a bad situation ie, being physically abused in a previous marriage, and turned her life around. Her over-the-top glam and signature sound affects (”BAM!”) are what endeared her to fans the most. She was such a standout personality that she could probably carry her own show. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was in the works.

1. New York (Flavor of Love, I Love New York and New York Goes to Hollywood)

Tiffany Pollard aka New York has done what no woman on reality TV has ever done. She worked her personality (whether you like it our not) to scoring not one, but two spin off shows. After Flavor Flav broke her heart twice, producers gave her a chance to find love on her own terms. After season two of I Love New York ended, we thought Tiffany had found love in Tailor Made, and watched her move on to Hollywood. On New York Goes to Hollywood, she persued her dreams of acting and broke up with Tailor Made in the process. Producers still couldn’t get enough and offered her I Love New York season three. New York declined but some how, I don’t think we’ve seen the last of her on reality tube.
