Robin Givens Reacts To Oprah’s Tyson Interview

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Monday, November 16, 2009 at 12:00 am.

There are three people in life I fear: God, my mama, and Oprah.

And if I’m being honest, I’d rather have to work to regain the love of the other two than Oprah. Kidding, ya’ll…but really, I would watch my mouth around the Queen of TV.

When Mike Tyson sat down with Oprah a few weeks ago some people thanked Oprah for humanizing him in a way not previously seen outside of his most recent documentary.

Some people, like his ex-wife, Robin Givens, were mad at Oprah because it humanized him a little too much.

At one point during his interview Mike was asked about his reactions to his now infamous interview with Robin about his physical abuse to her. He quipped that at the time he wanted to “sock her.” The audience seemed to laugh, though as Oprah noted in the video it was the kind of laughter that pointed more towards them feeling uncomfortable versus them getting a chuckle out of abuse.

But Robin spoke out and in turn Oprah invited her to speak her piece. Fortunately, Oprah apologized to Robin and further clarified her reaction during Tyson’s interview. Robin did have a point, which Oprah acknowledged proving that she is indeed everything – including someone who will apologize.

P.S. I wouldn’t try that again if I were you, though, Robin. Love you, O!

Sarah Palin Headed To Oprah

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 12:00 am.

sarah_palin

It’s official: Sarah Palin is never going away.

Ever.

Although she no longer holds any public office everything Palin related – including the private parts of her daughter’s baby daddy – makes the news.

And with Oprah being up on game, I suppose it shouldn’t have been hard to figure out that Sarah Palin would eventually find her way in Chicago.

Yesterday, Harpo announced that Oprah and Palin will meet for the very first time on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Despite Oprah endorsing the opposing ticket for the 2008 presidential election, Palin is appearing on the show to shill her upcoming memoir, Going Rogue: An American Life.

Already some people are criticizing Oprah for only now inviting Palin to her show. Likewise, a few Palin promoters are angry that Palin is appearing on Oprah’s show.

Trust me when I say both factions will be glued to their TV sets on Nov. 16 when this interview runs.

Oprah Reunites Tyson & Holyfield

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Friday, October 16, 2009 at 12:00 am.

tysonbite

Let the record show that there is nothing Oprah Winfrey can’t do.

Fresh off his highly publicized interview in which he declared that his original apology wasn’t sincere, Mike Tyson will return to Oprah on Friday to reunite with Evander Holyfield.

In their second fight back in June 1997, Mike treated Holyfield’s ear like a chicken nugget. Tyson explained to Oprah that at the time of the biting he was angry that Holyfield was knucking and bucking and ready to fight.

How will these two interact? I’ve seen pictures of them post-ear nugget debacle, but Tyson said Holyfield always seems distant. I would too if you tried to bite a piece off my head.

But, there’s a lot these two can catch up on. Both are broke and could use the publicity. I say form a friendship, you two.

Mike Tyson: The Oprah Interview

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 12:00 am.

oprah-tyson

When you grow to prominence for fighting, become notorious as a convicted rapist, and infamous for biting a piece of a man’s ear off, you’re not expected to be someone aware of his emotions.

But that’s just one of many revelations Mike Tyson shared during yesterday’s appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

The former heavyweight champion of the world appeared on Oprah’s stage to discuss his much discussed documentary, Tyson.

In recalling the first time he fought in response to bullies, Tyson told Oprah, “A big penalty if they violated my feelings. Even to this day I’m overly protective of my feelings.”

His feelings poured out throughout the interview. We saw a very visibly choked up Tyson talked about his trainer and father figure, Cus D’amato.

Tyson was also distraught while discussing the loss of his four-year-old daughter, Exodus. Tyson said he didn’t want to know what led to her death for fear of how his anger would go to the person held responsible.

As the interview went on, Tyson discussed desire to make his opponents in the ring fear him. That’s in part to him admittedly harboring fear himself before every fight. He also acknowledged that he grew up with a huge inferiority complex – which spawned his own God complex.

Listening to him throughout the interview you could tell how important his children are to him. He himself said that his children only matter to him now.

Other highlights:

On Robin Givens: “I have no animosity toward her. I realize that was a great learning experience.”

How he is a different man emotionally in a relationship: “I said I’m going to try to dedicate my life to living a particular type of way – restricting myself from things that tore my life and family.”

On drug dealers not taking his life for stealing from them: “I think they felt sorry for me.”

On what he wants to say to Evander Holyfield: “I just want to apologize. I’ve known him for such a long time. I was undisciplined, and in a very competitive move and I was so desperate to beat him. I was just upset.”

On losing his fortune: “My priorities have changed so much I wouldn’t even know what to do with that kind of money.”

Chris Rock, Solange, Talk Good Hair on Oprah

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at 12:00 am.

chris-oprah

When it comes to black women and hair the words Remy, Yaki, and human hair are heard all too often.

That along with phrases like, “Her track is showing,” “Her weave looks busted,” “Ooh, I wonder where she bought that hair,” among others.

In his documentary Good Hair, Chris Rock goes in on millions of black women’s kitchens and explores why so many feel the need to spend their dollars to have hair made in New Dehli and Seoul sewn into their scalps.

Today, he’ll appear on Oprah to discuss his new film and Oprah herself will talk about her own hair history.

If your recall, Oprah addressed those of you who felt she had the good good attached to her scalp. She let it be known that her hair is real. Some of you sucked your teeth, but Oprah was too busy letting her [real] hair (take that, take that, haters) blow in the wind to care.

And since this show is themed on hair Solange will also appear on the show to discuss why she got the Florida Evans cut earlier in the year.

Give it up for baby sister making her way on to the Mother of daytime television’s talk show without an invite from Beyonce.

Oprah To Do Michael Tribute

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Friday, September 4, 2009 at 12:11 am.

oprah10

Michael Jackson has been dead for months now and people were wondering why Oprah never chimed in with her thoughts on Jackson’s life and legacy.

Rumors swirled that because of Jackson’s previous allegations of child molestation Oprah was reluctant to discuss the man who gave her one of the most in depth interviews of his career.

Well, those people can hush up now as Harpo Productions has announced that the The Oprah Winfrey Show will dedicate an entire episode to Michael Jackson.

The episode, set to air Sept. 16, will feature excerpts from Winfrey’s 1993 interview with Jackson.

A press release from Harpo (who this woman) says Winfrey will remember “the King of Pop with never-before-revealed personal details” from the interview.

Hopefully, the Oprah of 2009 does a nice introduction to the bonus footage or otherwise people will still think the Queen of Daytime is throwing shade to the King of Pop.

Oprah’s Sorry

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Friday, May 15, 2009 at 11:50 am.

oprah-jamesfrey

Some things in life you just shouldn’t do. Forget lying, cheating, and stealing – pissing off Oprah should top the list of life don’ts.

James Frey learned that valuable lesson when Oprah publicly scolded him on national television for duping her and millions of other readers when it was revealed that he fabricated portions of his memoir, A Million Little Pieces.

The book, released in 2003, was themed on how he overcame addiction to drugs and alcohol.

Oprah selected the book to be a part of her book club in 2005 and sent the book soaring to bestseller status.

Then a year later sites like The Smoking Gun put Frey on full blast for fronting. Do you know how some say spending time in jail for a few hours can feel like a few months or years?

Apparently Frey lost his concept of time because he wrote that he spent months in jail when it was really only a couple of hours.

In 2006 Oprah brought Frey to her show to confront him. She said, “It is difficult for me to talk to you, because I really feel duped.’

She then berated him for lying and the author publicly apologized.

Oprah practically beat him down without raising a finger. He should be lucky he wasn’t immediately struck by lightning soon after, though.

She has since apologized, however. Vanity Fair.com reports that Oprah has apologized for shaming him on TV. Frey in return said he felt “grateful” for Oprah’s gesture.

That was really nice of her. I don’t get why people criticized her for “shaming” him anyway. He lied.

Most people would have let his lying self stay shamed.

Mo’Nique Talks New Show, Movie, & Products

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 1:54 am.

monique_oprah

Mo’Nique is a hustler. From comedy tours to sitcoms to book deals the ex-Nikki Parker stays on her grind. If you didn’t know that already, you definitely caught wind of her entrepreneurial skills on yesterday’s comedy-themed episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Knowing Oprah’s blessing is worth more than a winning lottery ticket, Mo’Nique pulled out a sample of her perfume line from her bra and let Oprah know that she’s put some things on layaway for her kids and if she liked her fragrance those items were as good as sold.

Since Oprah gave her blessing, I’m sure you can now expect a bunch of middle-aged women smelling like the essence of Mo’Nique later this year.

In addition to pushing her fragrance, Mo’Nique discussed some of her upcoming projects – including her upcoming late night talk show on BET.

If she’s anywhere near as funny as she was on Oprah’s show, we may have found a talk show host who will finally fill the void left by Arsenio Hall.

While Mo’Nique got plenty of laughs on stage she also got serious when discussing her role in the movie, Precious.

The film – premiering in the fall – earned Mo’Nique a special recognition for acting at this year’s Sundance Festival.

Could an Oscar be in her future? I’m not sure, but I know I look forward to hearing more stories about her late grandmother watching Spanish porno in the fall.

Check out a preview of Mo’Nique’s new BET talk show!

Mo’Nique’s not the only celebrity joining the BET line-up. Check out Monica discussing her new reality series and catch a sneak preview of Mary J. Blige and MC Lyte giving viewers the Hollywood treatment.

Oprah Takes On The Bullies

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at 11:50 am.

oprah_bullies

Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, an 11-year-old Massachusetts student, hanged himself inside of a stairwell at his family’s home. Shortly thereafter another 11-year-old named Jaheem Herrera was discovered hanging from an extension cord by his younger sister in Georgia.

Both young boys were the victims of an onslaught of homophobic slurs and teases from their classmates.

Yesterday, in an effort to launch a nationwide discussion on the effects of bullying, Oprah brought the mothers of Carl and Jaheem together for a frank discussion about each of their child’s experiences with bullies and how it caused them to take their own lives.

Oprah’s New Favorite Is…

Published by Michael Arceneaux on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 12:00 pm.

jenny-mccarthy

Add Jenny McCarthy to the list of people who ought to be grateful to Oprah every single day for the rest of their lives because she has made them more relevant than they could ever be without her.

The Hollywood Reporter says the former “Singled Out” co-host (does anyone else remember that show?) has signed a deal with Harpo to develop several projects – one of which includes a syndicated talk show that Jenny will host.

The ex-Playboy playmate and Jim Carey’s special friend has made several appearances on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to talk about her struggles with her son’s autism.

Now she joins Dr. Phil and Rachel Ray as people who are rich and popular just because Oprah thinks they should be.

You know, Oprah spoke at my college graduation. I tried my hardest to get close to her. I felt like if I could at least get within a few feet from her my credit score would instantly shoot up.

I think each of us should strive to get closer to Oprah. Look where it gets you.
