Tiny & Toya: What Did You Think?

Published by Starr Rhett on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 11:00 am.

I initially imagined that Tiny & Toya would be more like the babymama version of Laverne and Shirley, but with a pretentious twist (like the rest of the world). However, the first episode was more interesting than I anticipated.

The show chronicles the lives of good friends, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, TI’s alleged wife, and Antonia “Toya” Johnson-Carter, Lil Wayne’s ex-wife and first child’s mother. In last night’s premier, we got a first glimpse into each woman’s world. Tiny is dealing with her now incarcerated “husband” preparing to go to prison in addition to her father having Alzheimer’s disease, while Toya struggles with a drug addicted mother.

What I like so far, is that each woman has her own identity and they both seem very down-to-Earth. Tiny reminded us in the opening credits, that she had her own career and money before TI, and Toya was Lil Wayne’s teenage love (from back in the CMB days).

It’s not ostentatious like The Real Housewives of Atlanta, and Tiny and Toya actually act their ages. Sorry drama addicts, I don’t think you’ll be seeing too much cattyness this season. I’m definitely tuning in next week. What did you think?

Tiny and Toya airs Tuesday nights on BET at 10pm ET

It was better than I expected… I may continue watching the show but I wont be anticipating new episodes every week by setting my tv guide for the show. It was interesting hearing about their lives without their “men” for the 1st episode. Who knows how the rest of the show will go??? Its too early to tell… Until then good start Tiny & Toya

Ghetto!!!!! BET is getting worse and worse by the day. Shows like this and Keysha Cole, and College Hill provide nothing but the stereotypical loud-talking, lip smacking negros. I’m done with this station!

I originally thought that this would be some “baby mama drama” or some chicks tailing on their mans’ fame, that BET often puts on, but after watching the sneak peak last night, I found myself engrossed in their issues. It was very real and I can very much relate to their situation(s). Kudos to Tiny & Toya and BET for putting an “adult” spin on this show. I look forward to catching the season premier.
FYI, the promos that were displayed on the BET Awards need to be pulled. It was not a good display of the show. As stated, it looked like some straight baby mama drama, not at all like these girls have a head on their shoulders.

It was a embarrassment for me being from New Orleans. People already stereotype us and this just makes it worse. i accept that our dialect is different but everyone is not ghetto like this. there are some of us who are intelligent. Some of us who are not in this “cycle” i hope it gets better!!!!

It was another pointless show on BET that further promotes stereotypes about African Americans… I wish I could shout from the mountaintop that BET does NOT represent the voice of the African American community in America!

I couldn’t stand listening to Toya’s accent. She has the ugliest accent, but she’s very pretty. Tiny, she’s busted as hell. Now wait a minute is Tiny white and black or is her mom just really fair skin. Looking at her parents you would think she would have grown up very middle class and articulate. But, she’s just as ghetto as her bumm ass husband TI.

It was okay…good enough to keep watching to see what it will turn into. The girls seem real! I like that no one was showing off for the camera. You know how women can get…a little attention and they start getting loud and fronting. They were very much like grown women are suppose to act :)

If this is black entertainment television, then pluck my eyes out and cast them in the river. Why is BET our black TV station being inundated with modern day buffoonery and foolishness? Why don’t you just replay Amos and Andy, Mantan Moreland from the Charlie Chan series or Steppin Fetchit. This continuous negative depiction of African American entertainment will continue to depict us as illiterate, sex crazed, materialistic buffoons! Where are the shows that depict African Americans in a positive light? How about a reality show about Dr. Ben Carson or the three men who wrote the book titled “The Pact”? We have a black president and you all can’t seem to find a positive program that reflects that or promotes change? Why are you (BET) helping to perpetuate those negative stereotypes that we all hate and are trying to move past or are you?
