Tiny & Toya: What Did You Think?

Published by Starr Rhett on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 11:00 am.

I initially imagined that Tiny & Toya would be more like the babymama version of Laverne and Shirley, but with a pretentious twist (like the rest of the world). However, the first episode was more interesting than I anticipated.

The show chronicles the lives of good friends, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, TI’s alleged wife, and Antonia “Toya” Johnson-Carter, Lil Wayne’s ex-wife and first child’s mother. In last night’s premier, we got a first glimpse into each woman’s world. Tiny is dealing with her now incarcerated “husband” preparing to go to prison in addition to her father having Alzheimer’s disease, while Toya struggles with a drug addicted mother.

What I like so far, is that each woman has her own identity and they both seem very down-to-Earth. Tiny reminded us in the opening credits, that she had her own career and money before TI, and Toya was Lil Wayne’s teenage love (from back in the CMB days).

It’s not ostentatious like The Real Housewives of Atlanta, and Tiny and Toya actually act their ages. Sorry drama addicts, I don’t think you’ll be seeing too much cattyness this season. I’m definitely tuning in next week. What did you think?

Tiny and Toya airs Tuesday nights on BET at 10pm ET

Just when I thought BET couldn’t exploit the black people any further, they prove me wrong. You put the icing on the cake with this one. This show does NOTHING to uplift anyone, and what’s the purpose or moral of the show: black women will never succeed to become anything but worthless baby mamas. I find the underlying message of this show to be disturbing and then these two “ladies” proudly showcase their insatiable appetite for [ghetto] fashion but yet display the characteristics of an educated person. Once again BET dupes the black people.

Tiny tries to be a sweet “older sister” to Toya- but they both seem very lost. I’m not sure if Tiny really has “issues”, or if she’s just bored of being TI’s housewife. It sure seems like Toya needs to find herself and for the sake of her daughter, find her own life/identity.

I’m ashamed of BET for taking two very confused and lost souls and exploiting them for the purpose of what? My anger is not with these young women, they are just a prime example of misdirected Black women who feel education should take second place to materialism. Come on BET, we have a Black President now ! Some of us do strive for better. Don’t set us back 20 years. We need programs that are going to empower our young women not just focus on the stereotypical problems. Lets work on solutions. I have worked very hard to educate my self and leave the ghetto. I’m in no way ashamed of where I come from but its not who I am. Therefore I am angry that rather than to move us forward you continue to decline in your standards and sell out to the reality t.v. trash. I my self will no longer support this network, until it can do better and I’m sure that there are many who agree with me . Thank God !! You DO NOT represent all Black people.

I actually liked it when I was sure that I wouldn’t. Tiny & Toya seemed REAl to me and that was what I liked most about the show. I read a couple of comments that called the girls ghetto, but I guess I must have looked deeper then the surface because all I saw was two young ladies with a lot of the same issues that a lot of women have: Toya is very young & a very young mother trying to figure out life after a divorce from a major rap star & Tiny is a very talented singer in her own right who is struggling over having to choose a career possibly over a relationship with T.I. who wants to take care of her which is most womens fantasy! But I dig Tiny because w/ all she’s going through herself she still has enough left inside of her to hold Toya up. I saw the friendship and that is what the show was suppose to be about… I GET IT and I look forward to seeing more.

I didn’t even bother to watch this trainwreck. When I saw the commercials for the show I knew right then and there that I could not watch this show. My decision was further cemented when I watched the BET Awards and saw these two on there. The only thing that either has going for themselves is for one, Toya is a beautiful young lady and Tiny was in Xscape, other than that there is nothing . I also would have to agree with some of you who commented that Tiny really needs to stop juicing her lips. Whether they are big or not she is still ugly as hell. She was butt ugly when she was with Xscape and nothing has changed besides she now has lopsided puffy a$$ lips. I am not hating either, I felt this way back then when Xscape first hit the scene and nothing has changed. I will never watch this show.
