VH1 Relaunches Behind the Music With Lil Wayne

I’ve been a fan of Vh1’s “celebreality” before it was officially titled that. Remember Behind the Music? It was their docu-series that provided a candid glimpse into some of our favorite musicians’ lives. I was disappointed when it stopped airing but they’ve decided to bring it back (Yippie!). It premiers in September with Lil Wayne, the self-proclaimed best rapper alive.
My first introduction to Lil Wayne was a little over 10 years ago, when Juvenile released “Back That A** Up,” where Weezy spit his infamous verse at the end (drop it like it’s hot, drop drop it like it’s hot…). At that time, I never imagined that Lil Wayne would become one of the biggest hip-hop stars on Earth. After that initial introduction, I didn’t pay much attention to him nor did I know anything about his life story other than the facts that he was from New Orleans and that he was a teen father, but I checked out Vh1’s website and learned more interesting things about him.
Lil Wayne, née Dwayne Carter Jr. is only 27, but he has seen things growing up, that most 57-year-olds haven’t. At nine, he began recording with Baby and Slim Williams and by the time he was 11 he had lost his virginity, dealt drugs, snorted cocaine and almost accidentally shot himself to death.
Wow. I don’t know how Behind the Music will effectively cover all of that in an hour but I’m looking forward to the resurrection of the series and learning more about Weezy. There’s also going to be an episode about Bobby Brown down the line. This is going to be good.
Behind the Music premiers Thursday, September 10 at 9pm.
