Is Disney’s ethnic prince too White?

Some folks are upset at Disney’s first Black princess not having an “obviously” African-American prince. He is racially ambiguous with El DeBarge-Cab Calloway-Rick Fox bone structure and complexion… people are demanding chocolate, not the swirl!
The Princess and the Frog will be released later this year but controversy is already stirring. Previously, some were frustrated that the name of the princess was “Maddy” and she was a chambermaid who worked for a young White woman in 1920’s New Orleans. Critics shouted racism and comparisons to slavery. The princess went from Maddy to Tiana…
Now, we have the complexion of her other half, Prince Naveen of Maldonia—he is just too damn light-skinned for people’s taste. Some are saying Naveen looks straight up White! **gasp** That doesn’t look like a White prince to me. The film is based in New Orleans so I instantly thought he was Creole. Naveen resembles the love child of Jasmine Guy and El DeBarge. Is that a bad thing? Don’t Black folks come in all shades?
Racism in animation…. okay. This is the complexion of a cartoon character, not even a real person. Maybe this is more commentary on our long history of light-skin versus dark-skin versus racism at Disney.
This is a cartoon character from a movie that will not grapple with racism or constructs of color – we’re dealing with the land of Disney not The Boondocks. The Princess and the Frog will be a fluffy children’s movie where racism doesn’t exist and the prince and the princess will eventually live happily ever after… there are more gender constructs to be upset with in this movie.
I understand the strain of complexion in our community — but instead of thinking children will focus on the light-skinned prince, how about the image of a beautiful, brown Black princess? There definitely aren’t enough brown sisters in the media. For those asking why aren’t they showing “Black love”—are we really looking for Black love in a Disney movie?
I’m sure Disney is saying, “Why the hell did we do this movie? We need to stick to characters who are blonde and blue!”
Are you offended by Prince Naveen?

It is a shame that everyone still focuses on such petty things! Stop being part of the problem and be part of the solution. Now everyone wants to bring the president into it… and what deny that he is 1/2 white and light skinned, raised by his white mother and had little or nothing to do with his black family??? There are so many mixed children nowdays, and it is set in New Orleans, one of the most culturally diverse places in the world, but of course that couldn’t possibly have anything to do with it. Along with all else, it is just another subliminal attack on the black community. Seriously people can we move on.
Wow BET chill out. All blacks aren’t dark skinned !! So stop trying to make stupid things out of nothing.
Black people are so funny…we come in all shades…that is why we are so amazing. I’m 55 and folks are still tripping off of light and dark. I have children of all shades and so did my Mom. Shes tan and my Dad is coffee without cream. I’ve got a shot of cream in me but I’m pretty. I love men of are shades…Leon is so beautiful and the brother Gary from CSI makes me want to shout. I love men Red, Yellow, Brown and Black men….I’m that kind of woman. I don’t watch a lot of programs on TV because its all about light and dark. BET you always have have White looking woman…saying they’re Black. You are no help to the image problem. You always get crazy big mouth tough taking chocolate sisters to represent American Black women…..t Sheryl Underwood and that Black comedian who looks like a man and she called JayZ ugly…the nerve…but I’m scared of her. Now I think the story is beautiful…the Prince didn’t need curly hair…what he did need was red/brown/golden nappy dreads…ooo la la.Just the thought makes me what to holla. They say theres house niggas and field niggas. I don’t let house ~#~%# make me feel uncomfortable. They are no better…they were allowed to work in doors because they were the masters children. The folks in the fields were queens from a far away land and I always keep in my mind that I am somebody….somebody special. Lets enjoy the Disney movie and pray they re-do the hair.
Can you believe Anika the star was upset because the Disney doll was dark…she said she wasn’t that dark. Well she don’t even look that good with her pig face. I felt sorry for her not getting a lot of praise from Dreamgirls…but her light/dark comment has made me sick to my stomach. American Blacks come in all shades…we have freckles, hard tough blonde nappy hair and we come jet Black with straight /wavy hair. Once again we are unique.
well i believe people need to be happy that finally a black princess fairytale movie is in the works to be seen.I dont think it really matters what the complexions are because we been watching fairytale movies with bright skinned white people like forever so it would be interesting to see how this fairytale would play out.Besides it is a fairytale its not a big deal. Then it is a black princess thats gonna be patrayed so, people do need to lighten up on that note.Black peoples complexion issues and other issues are gonna still be around even after the film.I say proceed with the film to hell with all the extra drama.
i think atleast it could be two black people i can say thet in every other disney princess movie the prince and princess are from the same ethnic background so why arent they. i also believe that this is indeed a childrens movie and they not gonna be worried about shin they just going be enjoying the movie. but hay thats just my opinion.
I won’t pay to have my children watch a white ‘prince’ have his way with the first black Disney princess.
come on with all this childish crape, jerry you are teaching your children raceism the prince is light skined wow . im a brown skined female and i dont see the problem. we as african americans need to look at the biger pic than your complextion. getover it to thoses that have a problem be happy that there will be a princess that your children can look up to.
God Bless
I agree. The prince looks completely white. Not all Black women think that their prince comes in a vanilla package. To me that is saying only white men can be royal or good. It is stereotyping. My king will always be Black. I am the one who want peace between the races but I don’t want it between my sheets.
Let me clear up my last statement. I do want peace between my sheets but the only thing white I want there is the sheets.
i think the prince should be white… whats wrong with that? my father is white and my mother is black. and my girl friend is half japanese and half mexican…. why is this even an issue our president is half white… but people tend to forget that he isnt the first black president he is the first half white half black president… and another thing how come bet never play any punk rock, ska, oi, hardcore! tons of bands have blacks in them like bad brains, dead kennedys, the cromags, the specials, the slackers, the toasters………………………… the list goes on

They are obviously trying to promote racial harmony by representing minorities in their shows however their methods show the true governing attitude behind it. They are offering employment to any man, woman or child to the exclusion of one racial type. This makes one wonder how ‘ethnic’ looking a person has to be. Can they be mixed or of some eastern European descent so long as they don’t appear to be too anglo? Would a Swede or Ukrainian do as well as an Inuit or Colombian? Why are they lumping all non-caucasians together and adopting the attitude that one is basically the same as the other?
There it is.
they could have atleast gave him cruley hair lol
You do realize there are children starving and being abused and raped. Lets focus on something real…
