Movie Review: ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’

transformersSummary: A sequel to the 2007 Transformers, a college freshman is caught up in the battle of good robots (Autobots) versus bad robots (Decepticons). The bad robots want to destroy the human race and only the freshman can save the day.

Review: Let’s start with the length — a whopping 147 minutes! Isn’t that reserved for Oscar-worthy films like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button — not a popcorn action fluff like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen? This movie definitely gets Worst Editing of the Year; a nice hour could’ve been shaved off the epic junkyard film and it would’ve improved the entire film-going experience by 100 percent. By the two hour mark, folks were walking out of the theater.

That’s the first blow with Transformers and while the movie has its redeemable moments, it’s really two movies — one, a horny teen flick and the other a solid action flick. The two conflict, slowly chipping away the good. There is Megan Fox, who is cast as the hot girlfriend. Her opening scene is sitting on a motorcycle with her back arched and ass sticking out — looking like a scene from VH1’s Rock of Love. Shia LaBeouf, who reprises his role, is just a goofy teen who can save the day, which is obviously playing to the senses of their target audience. By the way, Tyrese was great in the film, but his role is more like a cameo — he has no more than 20 minutes screen time. They also had some hip-hop talking twin robots that used bad grammar and words like “punk ass.” Their slang was borderline offensive and they had more screen time than Tyrese. Is this the movie’s way of appealing to the African-American audience? I never knew that robots could shuck n’ jive…

The special effects are probably the flick’s strongest element, but even that at times gets messy. When the robot titans are fighting, you can’t tell who is fighting who. It’s just metal crashing and tumbling, but once you get over the motion sickness the action is exciting enough… and loud. Yes, loud. I felt like I was on a battlefield in Iraq, thinking, “Is this what soldiers in Iraq hear?” I know it’s an odd critique but even a poor child next to me did his best to scream over the movie and cried to his father, “Daddy it’s too loud!” I felt his pain; I needed an Advil as soon as I walked out of the theater.

Plot wise, I only wish Transformers could transform into a good storyline. The script was generic; felt overcrowded when it didn’t need to be and took itself too seriously for 147 minutes — for example, the movie begins in 17,000 B.C.!

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen might perform well at the box office due to the media hype. But, without a doubt, this action sequel is the worst action movie of the year (so far).

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is in theatres today.

1. The movie was great. OUTSTANDING
2. When a movie is eye catching from beginning to end I do not mind it being 2 and a half hour long. Some movie are to short for spend 10 dollar on and then popcorn and a drink.
3. Stop throwing the racist card around it’s getting too old. I think they were funny and it gave the movie a sense of humor.
4. I never watch the cartoon but I did get the story line and yes some things are left out so that why there will be a part 3.
5. Don’t action movies are suppose to be loud.
6. I do love how they transform from automobile to robots; that is the most cool part of the movie and if that what you love the most about the movie of course you want to see more of it, me too.

I thoughtthe movie was WAY!!!! better than the first one. It wasn’t to drawn out it was exactly how it was supposed to be. If you don’t like action films mixed with a little comedy then don’t go and see it but you’ll be missing out on a good movie and it will be your lost. It’s a kids movie anyway where are your imaginations people. I have a 7 year old son and I think that I enjoyed it more than he did. I almost cried when optimus prime died. All in all the movie is GREAT and I would love to go see it again. Can’t wait until the dvd comes out.

I do agree on one thing Tyreese, and the whole army crew should have had more screen time.

I thought the movie was fun. The kids enjoyed it and I’m happy. It is a movie mostly that inspired kids and A word to the Producers , more kids where at the movies than adults and I think you guys should consider the indecent language that was used being that this movie influence so many kids.

Indeed the movie was irrevocably overdrawn. Along with that, I haven’t seen as many plotholes in a movie since the 3rd film in the Mummy franchise. For example, since the Decepticons disliked the humans so much why did they bother learning the english language even amongst each other when it made far better sense to speak in their native Cybertronian tongue. There’s the inclusion of various conspiracy theories in the film that fail epically. You’d think that if there was a robot tomb in the city of Petra or a gigantic sun harvesting machine among the Pyramids of Giza that our relatively modern ground-piercing geophysical radar would’ve been able to pick them up. Those who can’t see the excessive levels of generalizations, stereotype or simply the critical research failure in this film are those who must have have been fortunate enough to be able to leave their brain BEFORE entering the theater. The fact that it was well-received by the public is only a sign that the taste of general masses is quite “cheap”. Honestly, Bay’s defense of the film as “good clean fun” is just another way of saying “I wash my hands of guilt”. Either that or he’s seriously lacking in the sensitivity department. As the emotional moments of the film; were basically spliced together from other films yet ultimate lack the spark from their inspirations. No, I didn’t feel sad over Optimus’ death, since the circumstances leading to them were incredibly stupid (who would turn their back in the middle of a battle without effectively disabling all of their opponents). And to counter the statements that a dislike of this movie signifies a close-minded mentality, I would like to point the statement as being inverse in substance. Those who like this movie are the ones who should be referred to as close-minded, since it was a celebration of everything traditional and stereotypical in a action movie (good aliens vs. bad aliens, aesthetically decided sides, dorky kid saving the world, embarrassing parents, excessive plot devices, obstructive bureaucrat and so on). One thing that Bay got right however the was choice of using Industrial Light and Magic for the industrial (an obvious choice, considering their achievements in other sci-fi flicks such as Star Wars), thus making the cgi of the film its only saving grace. I’m quite sure that I will be dubbed a hater for this comment, but I again beg to differ since I am simply giving facts based on logical variables.

I thought it was better than Terminator Salvation. Just as corny, just as poorly written, but at least with Transformers we weren’t expecting much more…

This following excerpt from the comment from “OKAY” shows the mentality of a person who would like this sad excuse of a movie…

“5. Don’t action movies are suppose to be loud.”

I guess that says it all…

Sexist, racist, and stupid. “Black” robots who can’t read. Great.
