Movie Review: ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’

Published by Clay Cane on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 12:00 am.

transformersSummary: A sequel to the 2007 Transformers, a college freshman is caught up in the battle of good robots (Autobots) versus bad robots (Decepticons). The bad robots want to destroy the human race and only the freshman can save the day.

Review: Let’s start with the length — a whopping 147 minutes! Isn’t that reserved for Oscar-worthy films like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button — not a popcorn action fluff like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen? This movie definitely gets Worst Editing of the Year; a nice hour could’ve been shaved off the epic junkyard film and it would’ve improved the entire film-going experience by 100 percent. By the two hour mark, folks were walking out of the theater.

That’s the first blow with Transformers and while the movie has its redeemable moments, it’s really two movies — one, a horny teen flick and the other a solid action flick. The two conflict, slowly chipping away the good. There is Megan Fox, who is cast as the hot girlfriend. Her opening scene is sitting on a motorcycle with her back arched and ass sticking out — looking like a scene from VH1’s Rock of Love. Shia LaBeouf, who reprises his role, is just a goofy teen who can save the day, which is obviously playing to the senses of their target audience. By the way, Tyrese was great in the film, but his role is more like a cameo — he has no more than 20 minutes screen time. They also had some hip-hop talking twin robots that used bad grammar and words like “punk ass.” Their slang was borderline offensive and they had more screen time than Tyrese. Is this the movie’s way of appealing to the African-American audience? I never knew that robots could shuck n’ jive…

The special effects are probably the flick’s strongest element, but even that at times gets messy. When the robot titans are fighting, you can’t tell who is fighting who. It’s just metal crashing and tumbling, but once you get over the motion sickness the action is exciting enough… and loud. Yes, loud. I felt like I was on a battlefield in Iraq, thinking, “Is this what soldiers in Iraq hear?” I know it’s an odd critique but even a poor child next to me did his best to scream over the movie and cried to his father, “Daddy it’s too loud!” I felt his pain; I needed an Advil as soon as I walked out of the theater.

Plot wise, I only wish Transformers could transform into a good storyline. The script was generic; felt overcrowded when it didn’t need to be and took itself too seriously for 147 minutes — for example, the movie begins in 17,000 B.C.!

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen might perform well at the box office due to the media hype. But, without a doubt, this action sequel is the worst action movie of the year (so far).

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is in theatres today.

I arrived at the theater 2 hours early just to buy tickets to the rapidly selling out movie. I sat in the theater for another hour just so I could sit and watch 20 minutes worth of previews.

As soon as the movie started, I was a disturbed at all the “dry-humping” the dogs did, and the silly antics the mother was putting on. As the movie progressed, I understood that there had to be more robots to make it seem official, but the dessert fight scene was long and outdrawn! Optimus dyin in the middle had me ready to leave, and then Jetfight was old! HE WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE OLD! But then again I guess Mr. Bay thought since he was an old “jetfighter” he had to be portrayed as old!

Then the twin autobots was poorly depicted! What was there purpose? To annoy and agitate me? The refused to die, and the script was poorly written.

I guess I will have to wait until the dvd man comes around before I will see it again!

I thought the humor was great, the actions was great the storyline excellent for ET type of film. I thought demonstrated an interesting look into our history and some of the wonders of our world, which is a great combination for science fiction movie. I like the fact that it portrayed a little history of the Transformers and the Mother was off the chain.

I have a heart of a kid so I enjoyed it. Peace out!

I sooo definitely disagree with the movie review….the movie was AWSOME!!!! Just because it was 2 in a half hours long made it even better…it was action all around nd it made you want more…the whole movie i was on the edge of my seat…and so was everybody else in the theater…and the theater was packed….nobody in the theater was disappointed..at all. I also like how they balanced out the action and the comedy an humor…the storyline nd plot are great…i love the actors and actresses…there was absolutely nothing wrong with it…i think the movie was the best action movie out…and i so sure that millions of who saw it and who will see it will agree!!!! Great job Shia Labeouf, Megan Fox and Michael Bay…THE MOVIE WAS TOTALLY AWSOME!!!! WOOT WOOT!!!!

I think the movie was great and it wasn’t drawn out. if u don’t like transformers then you’re not gonna like the movie so don’t watch it. ALL the actors were good and just because tyrese was only in there for no more than twenty minutes doesn’t mean we have to slam the movie. The way the twin robots talk is showing that the robots have different personalities and people choose to take that language as offensive and it’s not directed towards all African Americans in the U.S. The movie was great and anyone should go see it. By the way, actions movies have always been LOUD and NO ONE walked out of the theatre needing an advil.

Mannnnnn……..I guess people just can’t get off the racist subject for one minute. If Tyrese wasn’t complaining then let it go. Its a movie people which I thought was good. Let some stuff just ride off . Its not that serious!!!!!!!!

The movie was really good a bit loud but good. Everybody is going to have their own opinion about the movie. If you like it you do if you don’t then oh well, go see another movie. We all are not going to like every movie that comes out when the media hypes it up. Like I said it was a good movie i’ll go see it again.

Just Me Said on

I understand that it was mentioned. But, the mention of that subject should have never been put in. Its in my opinion to think that it didn’t have anything to do with that issue. Some may think different. Thats cool! But, like I said I don’t knock you if you didn’t care for it. I just feel that everything that comes out, If its created by any race that subjects always brought up about racism. Now, believe me man when I tell you that I don’t knock anything that you do. Its just that you gotta feel where I coming from that sometimes that subject gets tossed around to much. I wish it wasn’t always done that way. Stay Up! Keep doing your thing homie!

i think it was a GREEEAAT movie.. especially for being a sequel-rarely do u see a sequel as good as the first movie and this was.. from what i’ve been reading i think you may have to be familiar with the original Transformers Cartoon movie to get the story line.. but it had everything a good movie should have.. and If I’m paying $10 to go see a movie and $5 for a soda & $7 for a snack I WANT THE MOVIE TO LAST A LONG TIME, especially if its good.. TO GET MY MONEY$$$ WORTH!!.. the twin bots were a funny addition too..

Ramona Said on
